6 . Challa lives in Ethiopia, Africa. In 2017, she was 16 years old. She saw a group of boys skateboarding in a parking lot. At the time, skateboarding was still pretty new in Ethiopia. The sport was mainly played by men, just as it is today. But Challa decided to change it. She wanted girls to experience skateboarding. So in 2020, she started Ethiopian Girl Skaters (EGS) with her friend Micky Asfaw. The club provides free skateboarding lessons to girls and young women.
EGS members can have lessons on Saturdays at Addis Skatepark. Even though they come from different backgrounds, they can get not only skating skills but also friendship and happiness.
Skateboarding was popular in California in the 1960s. But it didn’t take off in Ethiopia until about 10 years ago. In traditional Ethiopian society, girls should stay home and help their parents. Adults (成年人) are unwilling to let their daughters join the club.
“Everyone in the club helps each other,” Challa says about EGS and its members. “That’s how we try to build our sistership.” Kids in the club don’t need to buy skateboards for themselves. They can use boards freely. “Now we’re trying to open a shop so that more people in Ethiopia can feel the same joy they get from skateboarding,” Asfaw says.
