April Fool’s Day falls on the first day of April. No one knows how the day started. One of the stories goes like this: In the Middle Ages, French people in some parts of France celebrated New Year’s Day on April 1. Other French people who celebrated the day on Jan. 1 made fun of them. They called them “April fools”
Today, April Fool’s Day is popular in Western countries. The most fun part of the day is playing tricks. For example, someone might set all the clocks forward one hour

5 . Many Chinese people will wonder what gifts to get for their moms on Mother’s Day, but not many know Mother’s Day is actually a festival from America, which started in the early 20th century and usually falls on the second Sunday of May. The festival came to China as early as the 1980s and was widely accepted.
Why does a foreign festival become popular in China? In fact, Chinese traditional culture has always educated children to love and respect (尊敬) their parents. From our textbooks, we can read many poems and stories which celebrate (庆祝) mother’s love. Children in China grow up with the education of filial devotion (孝敬). On such a special day, people often use flowers or cards to express love. Carnations (康乃馨) are regarded as the perfect flowers for mothers around the world, but few know that China has its own for mothers—the tiger lily (虎百合). Like most of Chinese children, I’m too shy to say to my mom “I love you, mom” face to face. Instead, I will do what I can to show how much I love her. Mother’s Day is on the way, I’m going to send my mom a bunch of tiger lily. Also, helping with housework is a good way to make my mom happy.
Love for mothers can have different ways of expression. What matters most is love, not the festival itself. What mothers truly want is perhaps just a simple (简单的) expression of love from their children.

6 . A holiday connected with a math constant (常数) may not seem very exciting. But Pi (“π”) Day, celebrated every year in the US on March 14, is an exception. That’s because the celebrations may start with math activities centering around Pi, widely known as 3.14. But they always end with a piece or two of delicious pies!
The first Pi Day celebration was organized by Larry Shaw from San Francisco’s Exploratorium Museum. On March 14, 1988, he asked co-workers to join him in eating fruit pies. They had such a good time that museum officials turned Pi Day into a celebration to be held each year. Visitors took part in special activities and ate free delicious pies. As the news of the fun event spread, schools, libraries, and universities around the US also began to celebrate Pi Day. In 2009, the US made March 14 as the National Pi Day.
Today, Pi Day is celebrated in many creative ways. Every March 14 and March 15, women television forecasters (天气预报员) around the country dress in purple. The activity, known as “Dress for STEM” began seven years ago after a photo of hundreds of forecasters wearing the same dress, though in different colors, became famous on social media. The weather scientists decided to repeat the fun activity every year to encourage more girls to learn science, technology, engineering and maths.
March 14, which also happens to be Albert Einstein’s birthday, holds a special meaning for Princeton, New Jersey. This is where the great scientist spent the last twenty years of his life. The city celebrates the two special occasions (特别的事情) with a number of events, including pie-eating, pi-recitation, and Einstein look-alike contests.

Animals play so many important roles in our lives. Some, like cows and sheep, provide us with food; pets are our friends; other animals work for us. Above all, every animal — big or small — can fill us with a sense of the wonder of the natural world.
Unluckily, we don’t always value this. Many animals are endangered because of our actions, and millions of animals in the world are badly treated. World Animal Day reminds us, at least for one day a year, “to celebrate animal life in all its forms” and “to be thankful for the way in which animals enrich (使丰富) our lives.”
World Animal Day was started in 1931 in Florence, Italy. It made us pay attention to the problem of endangered animals around the world. It is now celebrated in most countries around the world. The day falls on October 4th every year.
All over the world on this day, volunteers raise money for animal centers and social organizations. Museums and zoos organize special events. Schools have also joined animal projects. No matter what is done, the idea is to remind us of the importance of animals and to show us how we could improve our relationship with animals.
If you want to take part, you could help an animal or organize a money-raising event for a local charity. The important thing is just taking an active part. We should offer animals as much as they offer us.

When is the World Animal Day every year?
Does the World Animal Day remind us of the importance of animals?
8 . World Animal Day falls on Oct 4 every year. It was started in 1931 to remind everyone on our planet to care about animals. Unluckily, many wild animals are facing great danger. Some even became extinct and cannot be seen forever. Recently, China has done much to improve the living condition of endangered wild animals.
The protection of Asian elephants is a good example. Asian elephants in China are mostly found in Yunnan Province. These animals have become endangered because some people are killing for their teeth. The government (政府) has been trying to protect them. For example, elephants teeth business is not allowed. This can greatly prevent elephants hunting.
Another example is the protection of the Yangtze finless porpoise (江豚). Because of lots of over-fishing and water pollution, the population of the Yangtze finless porpoise was just 1, 012 in 2018. That number was lower than the number of giant pandas. In 2020, the government once put a 10-year fishing ban (禁令). This action is very useful and now people can see a group of Yangtze finless porpoises jump and play in the Yangtze River.
With World Animal Day around the corner, we all can think of more ways to better protect our wild friends. As we share this Earth with all living things, we can truly make a difference for all animals.
