4 . Some French education specialists recently put on a festival — “The Festival of Errors (错误)” in Paris to encourage children to make mistakes. Yes, it’s true! The experts were worried that young people in France were not creative enough. Since they believe that a school system that focuses on marks and grades will lower the ability of the kids to produce new ideas, the activities in the festival showed the participants (参加者) the wonder and pleasure of getting things wrong.
Most people believe in success. In sport, politics and business, success is king. Our education systems are practicing the idea of encouraging people to be successful. We reward (奖励) success in exams, for example, with an offer to university. We reward success at university with a good job. People who do well in their jobs get higher positions, and so on.
But there are reasons why we should value failure as well. The problem with the success model is that it is likely to praise safe behaviour. We follow the steps and rules. More importantly, it encourages people to hang on to old ideas. On the other hand, people who like to take risks; think creatively, and come up with new ideas are told they are failures. In a very fast-changing world, this is not good practice.
Another point of view is provided by Dr Astro Teller who works for Google. He says that if you blame (责备) people for having good ideas, they will give up. His example is: imagine you send out a group of scouts (童子军) to a new land to find mountains to climb. They do their best to find one, but can’t. If you blame them when they come back, those scouts will give up.
And what about learning a language? Sometimes you have to take risks, because otherwise it becomes difficult to communicate. If you’re trying to talk to a person, and they don’t understand you, then you have to find a different way of saying what you want to say! So making a mistake can mean you also make progress!

We all use them every day. It would be hard to live without them. We are talking about toilets!
World Toilet Day is on November 19. Why do we celebrate it?
Toilets are a big thing in our lives. They take away our waste and keep our homes clean. Even today, 3.6 billion people in the world still do not have safe toilets, the United Nations said.
One gram (克) of human waste may have 10 million viruses (病毒) and 1 million bacteria (细菌). These make us sick or even kill us. That’s why we should care so much about toilets.
How many times do you use a toilet each day? Around seven times, said scientists. You will spend about three years of your life on the toilet!
Many people use this time to do other things. Some like to read while in the bathroom and even put bookshelves (书架) in there. Some like to talk with friends or family on their phones. Others like to study or work. There were many famous “bathroom artists” in history. The great Song Dynasty writer Ouyang Xiu wrote many works on the toilet.

8 . National Handwriting Day
Today, technology is everywhere. Gone are the days when we had to send handwritten letters or postcards to relatives just to keep in touch. We are now at a stage where we can simply send a quick text message for communication.
But, despite the growth of technology, handwriting is still part of our daily lives, even if we find ourselves doing less of it. There are still cases where electronic products are not available, and people need to make notes by hand. Plus, handwriting can be a beautiful art form and we need to preserve it.
That’s why National Handwriting Day is getting more and more popular each year. It celebrates the art of handwriting and allows us to take a step back and realize the value of a pen and paper.
In 1977, American educators began to feel that the art of handwriting was getting lost as a skill. The Writing Instrument Manufacturers Association (书写工具制造商协会) decided to do something—they created National Handwriting Day. It was decided that the 23nd of January would be the date of the holiday, as it is the birthday of John Hancock. Well-known for his penmanship (书法), Hancock was the first person to sign the U.S. Declaration of Independence (《独立宣言》).
According to historians, the art of handwriting was invented in 3400 B.C. in Mesopotamia (美索不达米亚), where people would write cuneiform (楔形文字) characters on clay tablets (泥板). From there, the art of writing spread to Egypt and Rome, and then on to the rest of Europe. In the Middle Ages, the world’s first handwriting and penmanship schools were set up to train scribes (抄写员) in the art of writing.
The study of handwriting is so common that it is actually a profession. People who study handwriting are called graphologists. They study handwriting to judge the reliability (可靠性) of historical documents or to understand one’s personality or character. While many think this isn’t a real science, others argue that we can learn a lot about someone by their writing.
Apart from practicing your handwriting, you could try your hand at trying different styles of writing. For example, you can try writing bubble letters, draw 3D letters or try drawing ancient letters. Don’t worry if you think your handwriting is “bad”. Instead, celebrate the day by studying other styles of handwriting or getting creative with your own new fonts (字体)!
