Taking good notes is a time-saving skill that will help you to become a better student in several ways.
You will want to take notes during classroom discussions and while reading a textbook or doing research for a report.
The following ways may work best for you.
Read the text quickly to find the main facts and ideas in it.
Carefully read the text and watch for words that can show main points and supporting facts.
Write your notes in your own words.
Note any questions or ideas you may have about what was said or written.
As you take notes, you may want to use your own shorthand (速记). When you do, be sure that you understand your symbols and that you use them all the time.
A.Use words, not complete sentences. |
B.Otherwise, you may not be able to read your notes later. |

You’ve been learning words since you were a tiny baby. At first, you learned them only by hearing other people talk. Now that you’re a reader, you have another way to learn words. What should you do when you come to a word and you think you don’t know what it means?
Say it
First, sound it out. Then say it to yourself.
Sometimes you know a word in your head but you don’t know what it looks like in print. So if you match up what you know and what you read—you have the word!
Use context
If this doesn’t work, take the next step: look at the context—the other words and sentences around it. Read this sentence: When it rained, the dog looked for shelter in the doorway.
Rain and in the doorway might give you helpful information.
If the context doesn’t help, look at the parts of the word. Does it have any parts you know? These can help you understand what it means. If you don’t know the meaning of miner, try looking at parts of the word. For example, -er at the end of a word means “a person who does something”. So a miner might be someone who works in a mine.
Look it up
If the three steps above don’t work, you can look it up.
A.Use word parts. |
B.Throw away the words. |
C.It might sound like a word you know. |
D.You can find the word in a dictionary. |
E.Following some easy steps can help you. |
F.If the word shelter doesn’t look familiar, look at the words around it. |
Do you want to make your learning more effective? Follow these four steps to develop your own personal learning plan and work to achieve your goals.
•Find a learning goalFind your goal before you create a personal learning plan.
Make a complete plan after finding your overall goal and smaller goals. Organize your plan in an order and list each of your learning goals. And then you should decide the actions you need to take to reach them.

B.Try to save time to focus on your learning each week. |
C.Your goal should be challenging and possible. |
D.You have a very big goal. |
E.Your work has just begun after you’ve created a learning plan. |
F.It will be easier to reach if you break your final goal down into smaller ones. |

5 . Good study habits are important for all students. When you have good study habits, you will learn faster and have a good memory. It is useful to have a good memory. When someone says he has a good memory, it means that he keeps practicing by using it.
Do you usually study in the living room? This is not a good place for study because it is usually too noisy. You need to study in a quiet place, such as your bedroom. A quiet place will help you learn well. Before you begin to study, do not forget to clean your desk. I think it is necessary to put away your things. It helps you study well, too. Enough light is good for your study. You will feel tired easily if there is not enough light.
Of all the good study habits, one has developed: asking questions is the key. Just ask. No one knows everything, but we can always learn from others by asking questions. Another simple but helpful habit is to tell yourself what you are studying for. Put your dream grades on your desk. It means you will see and think about it every day.
When do you work best? Are you an early bird or a night owl (猫头鹰), or something in between? Find your most productive work time and then plan to study at the time. I believe you will make great progress in your study.

6 . Homework should be done as soon as you get home from school. If you have after-school activities, the homework should be done first. At the same time, it is fine to allow for a snack (零食) break and also to allow for stretching (拉伸的) breaks.
Also, you should remember that it is your duty to do your homework. Next time, when you want to depend on Mom and Dad for help, please try to find the answer yourself, because you will learn much, much more that way.
When you have a question, especially something about a science or math, don’t always turn to your teacher! It is a good idea to try to find the answer yourself. If this doesn’t work, you can also look at the materials (材料) in the back of the book. They may guide you to the pages you should look at to help you understand the problem.
Finally, while doing homework, don’t think about or do other things. Keep working. Setting a time limit (制定限制) often helps with this. Different ages decide different amounts of time. 10—15 minutes is good for a child that’s aged 6—8. A time of 20—30 minutes is about eight for a child aged 9—12. Kids can keep studying for 30—45 minutes from the ages of 13 to 15. This, of course, depends on your abilities to pay attention and stay on tasks (任务).
