1 . China's space program took a major leap recently when it successfully landed the Zhurong rover(登防车) on Mars marking the country's first landing on another planet. Teams then rolled the rove onto the Martian ground and begin a mission to search for evidence of water and signs of past life.

The touchdown makes China the second county in history to land a rover on the surface of Mars. After months in orbit around the red planet, the Tianywen-l Spacecraft released the Zhurong rover for a landing in Utopia Planitia, a vast plain that may once have been covered by an ancient Martian ocean.

“Landing safely on Mars is a huge challenge, especially for China's first soft landing attempt," said Long Xiao, a scientist at the China University of Geosciences, "But it is a necessary step for Mars and deep-space exploration."

Mars is significantly harder to land on than the moon, says Michel Blanc at the Research Institute in Astrophysics and Planetology in France. But China has had a series of successful lunar missions that prepared it for a Mars landing.

China will openly share the data from Tianwen-1 and Zhurong the same way it has shared data from its lunar exploration missions, Long says, benefiting scientists around the world.

The mission will also set the stage for China’s next planned voyage to Mars---a sample---return attempt scheduled to launch around 2028.Beyond Mars, the country has plans to launch a Jupiter probe(探测仪), including a possible landing on the moon Callisto, to collect samples from a near-Earth asteroid(小行星), and to send a pair of spacecraft toward the edges of the solar system.

“In the age of ocean exploration, China has a history of Zheng He's voyages to Southeast Asia and Africa," says Zhang Xiaoping at the Macau University of Science and Technology, referring to early 15th-century explorations. Zhang views China's Mars mission as a continuation of these Ming Dynasty journeys.

4 . The Bridegroom's Oak, a 500-year-old tree just outside of Eutin, in Germany, has its own postal address and receives around 40 letters every day. They're sent by love seekers from around the world, in the hope that someone will read them and write back.

With so many dating apps and services available nowadays, sending letters to a tree hardly sounds like the best way to find love. However, there's something charming about sending a letter and allowing fate (命运) to work its magic, so the Bridegroom's Oak remains popular even now.

In 1890, a local girl named Minna fell in love with a young chocolate maker named Wilhelm, but her father didn't allow her to see the boy. Instead of giving up on each other, the two started exchanging love letters secretly, by leaving them in a knothole (节孔) of an oak tree. After about one year, Minna's father found out about their continued relationship, but instead of punishing them, he gave them permission to marry. The two lovers got married on June 2, 1891, under the oak tree that helped keep their romance (罗曼史) alive.

The couple's story spread around Eutin, and soon, people unable to find love started writing romantic letters and leaving them in the tree's knothole. By 1927, it was already known as Bridegroom's Oak and was so popular that it had its own address and postal code, allowing people from all over Germany and even abroad to send in their letters.

Love seekers visiting the Bridegroom's Oak need respect only one simple rule. They can check all the letters in its knothole, and take with them the one they wish to reply to, but they have to put the others back for other people to find.

So far the Bridegroom's Oak has been responsible for at least 100 marriages and many other romantic relationships.

5 . When considering places to visit in China, thoughts invariably drift to the same old sites, like the Great Wall, the Terracotta Army and the Bund. Look a little farther, however, and you can find some truly fascinating scenery and settings you’ve probably never heard of.

Houtouwan — A village like no other

Located on Shengshan Island, Houtouwan was once home to a fishing community. In the 1990s, however, much of the population left as the fishing routes dried up and opportunities arose on the mainland. Left completely to Mother Nature’s designs, Houtouwan has been transformed into a truly fascinating ghost village over the years, like the set of a horror movie!

Houtouwan is not an easy place to get to. From Shanghai, you will need to transfer between land and water vehicles several times to finally reach there.

Crescent Lake — An oasis in the desert

Out west, there’s a whole different world to be explored — Crescent Lake. It is part of a literal oasis in the desert that surrounds Dunhuang in Gansu. The crescent-shaped body of water has been preserved so visitors can enjoy one of nature’s true rarities.

Crescent Lake is located just a 15-minute taxi ride from Dunhuang.

Old Dragon’s Head — The Great Wall you’ve never seen before

One of the most unusual places to explore the Great Wall is Old Dragon’s Head, where the wall meets the sea in Qinhuangdao. The waves crashing against the stones stirs up a certain poetry. After checking out the wall, you can relax yourself on the beach.

Old Dragon’s Head is part of the Shanhai Pass section of the wall. It can be reached by taxi from Qinhuangdao train station.

Panjin Red Beach — The world’s most beautiful marshlands

Red Beach, located in Panjin, Liaoning province, forms part of what is the biggest wetland in the world. The weeds of the beautiful marshland area are flaming red. Stilted walkways have been installed so visitors can explore without harming the otherworldly weeds.

7 . There’s nothing like having a best friend forever—that person who you can have fun with and talk to. July 30 is the International Day of Friendship. Maybe you can keep an eye out for a new friend to get to know. And while we’re talking about friends, don't think humans are the only ones who know a thing or two about friendship. Check out these friendly animals in nature who help each other out.

An elephant and an olive baboon (东非狒狒) can be friends? It sounds strange, but it’s true. You can find this pair of friends in the grasslands of Africa. This unusual pair helps each other out like any good friends would. The elephant uses its front teeth to make a waterhole in the sand, and it lets the olive baboon have a drink from this “well” when it gets thirsty. In return, the baboon tells the elephant when danger is near. It climbs up to the treetops and calls out so its friend knows that it’s time to move on.

In the sea world, the goby fish and the shrimp (虾虎鱼和虾) are well-known for their friendship. While the shrimp provides a home for the goby fish, the goby fish provides a guidance service for the almost blind shrimp. You see, the goby has great eyesight (视力) and stays close to the shrimp. As the shrimp moves around, the shrimp is feeling the goby with its antenna (须) from time to time to make sure it's still there. If the goby senses danger, she will return to the home and the shrimp will follow.

The langur monkey has a very good friendship with the chital deer (花鹿). While the langur monkey eats in a tree, it drops leaves to the ground. This is good for the deer because sometimes there’s not much food. The deer will follow the monkey and eat whatever food is dropped. And in return, when the monkey comes down from the tree, the deer will put its foot down heavily to tell the monkey if it senses danger.

8 . Like many writers, I'm an expert at procrastination (拖延). When I ought to be working on a(n) _______, I'll sit there watching pointless videos.

According to traditional thinking, my problem is _______ management. Increasingly, however, psychologists are _______ this is wrong.

Tim Pychyl at Carleton University in Canada has proposed that procrastination is an issue with _______ our emotions, not time. The task we’re _______ is making us feel bad---perhaps it's too boring, too difficult or we’re too _______ failing---and to make ourselves _______ better in the moment, we start doing something else, like watching videos. One of the first _______ to inspire the emotional effect of procrastination was published in the early 2000s by researchers at Case Western Reserve University, Ohio. Researchers first made people feel bad by asking them to read sad stories and showed that this _______ their possibility to procrastinate before an intelligence test.

The further research has also highlighted the ________ of procrastination. A recent study has shown that ________ procrastination can affect mental and physical health due to a build-up of guilt and frustration over avoiding important work.

Over time, high ________ and poor health behaviors are well known to have an effect on health as they can increase the ________ of serious and chronic health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and even cancer.

All of the following means of ________ procrastination could have a major positive effect on your life. The next time you feel ________ to procrastinate, make your focus as simple as “What’s the next ________---a simple next step---I would take on this task if I were to get started on it now?” said Pychyl. “________ this takes your mind off your feelings and onto ________achievable action. 9 . Job interviews, exams, medical tests—we’ve all waited and worried over the results. Some lucky people can wait without much worrying. Many of us, however, get anxious awaiting the outcome.

Kate Sweeny, a professor of psychology at University of California Riverside, studies these differences in waiting behavior. In her latest study, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, she and a colleague studied 50 law school graduates waiting for the results of the California Bar Exam (律师资格考试). They took detailed surveys about the participants' self-esteem, how well they managed uncertainty, and whether they were more optimistic or pessimistic (悲观的). They also looked at how participants managed expectations and handled stress.

Not surprisingly, they found that an optimistic outlook and being more comfortable with   uncertainty made waiting less stressful. It didn't matter whether the participants reported high self-esteem or not. What mattered most was whether they expected the best.

“I was surprised,” says Sweeny.

Also interesting was that people changed as they got closer to learning the results. At first,it was harder for all of the participants to distract themselves, and all of them—even optimists—became more pessimistic as time went on.

Expecting bad news and preparing for failure may not relieve anxiety while waiting, but later on, it gives people a sense of control over their futures.

Similarly, it’s important that people don’t attach to much of themselves to the result. “If you convince yourself the bar exam is... just a silly exam you have to take and doesn’t reflect on your or your abilities, that... might help you .. if the news is bad,” she says.

Worriers can take comfort, however. Sweeny found that participants who suffered more stress were better at receiving even bad news. Indeed, those who had more anxiety while waiting for their bar exam results were more likely to turn around and start studying again if they failed.

Sweeny is recently studying the effects of mindfulness meditation (正念冥想) for those who are absorbed in results, as it helps people control their thoughts and emotions. The technique is perfect for this situation, she says. Waiting will never be easy, but having something under your control could make it more acceptable.

1. What did Sweeny find about her participants?
A.Law school students found it more difficult to accept failure.
B.The longer they waited, the less worried they seemed to be.
C.Positive people felt less stressed while waiting for their results.
D.Those with high expectations before the tests were more likely to fail.
2. What would Sweeney probably suggest to those who are waiting nervously?
A.Keep hoping for the best.
B.Always prepare for the worst.
C.Do not focus on the results.
D.Take the results as judgments on your abilities
3. Which participants were more likely to try again after failure?
A.Those who felt more anxious while waiting.
B.Those who were comfortable with uncertainty.
C.Those who had a sense of control over their failure.
D.Those who often practiced mindfulness meditation.

10 . Exercise and a healthy diet in childhood leads to adults with bigger brains and lower levels of anxiety, according to a new research in mice.

Though diet and exercise are consistently recommended as ways to promote health, this study is the first to examine the long-lasting, combined effects of both factors when they are experienced early in life.

The researchers determined that early-life exercise generally reduced anxious behaviors in adults. It also led to an increase in adult muscle and brain mass. When fed “Western” style diets high in fat and sugar, the mice not only became fatter, but also grew into adults that preferred unhealthy foods.

These findings have recently been published in the journal Physiology and Behavior. To obtain them, the researchers divided the young mice into four groups - those with access to exercise, those without access, those fed a standard, healthy diet and those that ate a Western diet.

Mice started on their diets immediately after weaning (断奶), and continued on them for three weeks, until they reached physical maturity. After an additional eight weeks of “washout”, during which all mice were housed without motion and on the healthy diet, the researchers did behavioral analysis and various measurements.

One of those they measured, leptin, is produced by fat cells. It helps control body weight primarily by lowering the sensation of hunger and also by increasing energy consumption. Early-life exercise increased adult leptin levels as well as fat mass in adult mice, regardless of the diet they ate.

Previously, the research team found that eating too much fat and sugar as a child can change the microbiome (肠道菌群) for life, even if they later eat more healthily. Going forward, the team plans to investigate whether fat or sugar is more responsible for the negative effects they measured in Western-diet-fed mice.

Together, both studies offer critical opportunities for health interventions in childhood habits. The findings may be relevant for understanding the potential effects of activity reductions and dietary changes associated with fatness.

1. What is unique about the new study?
A.It involves adults' eating behavior.B.It shows key elements for a long life.
C.It stresses separate impacts of exercise and diet.D.It highlights joint effects of early exercise and diet.
2. How did the researchers get the study results?
A.By trial and error.B.By previous experience.
C.By experimenting on grouped mice.D.By comparing mice with human beings.
3. What is the main function of leptin?
A.It forms fat cells.B.It brings down appetite.
C.It stimulates hunger.D.It limits energy consumption.
4. How does the author look at health interventions in early-life habits?
A.Favorably.B.Critically.C.Indifferently.D.Doubtfully.
