2 . The recent widespread interest in all branches of psychology has accustomed us to accepting an idea which, when first offered, seemed laughable:We all,at some level, spend most of the time on reverie(幻想)。We dream either consciously or unconsciously, awake or asleep,of a situation in which we feel we should be happier than we are in real life.Occasionally some childish ideas of happiness or success break out in to confuse or prevent us from living an adult life.Sometimes the dream is refusing to leave the safe shelter of the nursery, where all wants were met as soon as felt, where warmth and food and love were given freely and unearned. As Emerson wrote,"We do not believe there is any force in today to match or recreate that beautiful yesterday. We linger in(徘徊)the ruins of the old tent where once we had bread and shelter."To some extent this is true of all of us,but less true of the happy and successful adult than of others.

At other times, funnily enough, the life-wasting reverie is about success:The mild man is Napoleon or the ugly woman is a charming singer. If reality never broke in upon such reverie, the dreamer might be happier than if he were to find himself in a position to realize some part of it.Such reverie is in itself compensation for a life of dull routine. But,the world being what it is,the dreamer must live, for part of his time at least,in the cold atmosphere of fact. This is no Land of Cockaigne:Roast 1t pigs do not run about crying,"Eat me!"Fruit does not fall from the trees into our mouths..

The deeply rooted dreamer will struggle only just as much as he needs, and no more.He will do anything half-heartedly to get his bread and butter. Then, when his daily task is over,he will be hack to his dreams again, whether he realizes it or not. He succeeds at only one thing:in clearing away a little space, gaining each day a few hours of free time, for just one purpose-to go on wasting his life. But his

dream is happy. It is,for him,a true compensation for his failure in every other relation, and so he continues in it.Yet,since after all happiness is the true goal,he believes that the smallest success in reverie brings with it more happiness.

However,it is important to remember that failure is real, for otherwise we will not prepare ourselves to fight it.

D.They'll never do any more than keeping themselves alive.

A.we should stop spending most of our time on reverie

4 . When you choose a higher education course, here are some tips for you to follow.

Choosing your course

There are a range of subjects and courses available. Many are work-related; others are academic. You’ll need to look beyond the course title because courses with almost the same name may differ enormously. For example, if you’re interested in construction but wish to use your creative skills, you may be better suited to a building design management course than a building project management course.

Style of learning

Think about the style of learning that best suits you. It’s important to study a subject that you particularly enjoy, but if you want to follow a career in a different area, you may consider taking the subjects you want to learn and joining them into one degree. Many degree courses are made up of different subject modules which deal with particular areas of interest.

Choosing where to study

Where you study can be almost as important as what you study. One thing to consider is whether you want to live at home or move away. For some people, living at home offers the best of both worlds, but it may make sense to move if you want to study a particular course at a specific university or college. Many students value the experience of living on campus or in a different part of the country as an important part of university life.

Finding out more about courses

Once you’ve got a list of courses that appeal to you, it’s worth looking at some other sources of information about them, like independent reports. These provide information on the numbers of students who finished the course, student satisfaction and more.

Open days

Open days usually take place in spring or autumn. Although you may have an idea about what a course is like, there’s no substitute(替代)for attending a class yourself. If you can’t come on the open days, you can sign up for a guided tour instead.

1. You need to look beyond the course title because courses with similar names may be ______.
A.creativity-focusedB.work-related
C.far differentD.quite similar
2. What are you advised to do if your interest disagrees with your future career?
A.Add preferred subjects to your degree courses.
B.Choose the subjects based on your interest.
C.Earn different degrees.
D.Give up your interest.
3. What do we learn about from Para. 4?
A.Disadvantages of studying on campus.
B.Reasons for choosing where to study.
C.Importance of attending a nearby college.
D.Problems of going to a faraway university.
4. Why is it recommended to check independent reports?
A.To increase applicants’ interest.
B.To better understand a course.
C.To figure out how to complete a course.
D.To find out how different the courses are.
5. On the open days, would-be college students can ______.
A.sign up for a particular course
B.take a guided tour on the campus
C.see whether there is a substitute course
D.have a first-hand experience of a course

5 . From now on, never spend your precious time thinking of reasons for your failures and shortcomings. Instead, realize that the seeds of success were planted within you when you were born. Only you have the power to make those seeds grow.

The seeds, and the power to grow them, are contained in the most awesome machine ever created:the human mind. Success is a choice and not a chance. You were born a winner. You were born rich. You can be a success if only you make the right choice.

You cannot be successful without first developing your self-esteem. Your level of self-esteem is always based on the degree of control that you are able to exercise over yourself, and thus over your life. People with low self-esteem are people who do not believe that they have any power, or responsibility for their lives. They are the perennial(长期的)victims and martyrs. They are leaves tossed(摇摆)by the winds of chance blown about with any sudden change in the weather.

You can exercise control over your life only to the degree that you believe that you are responsible for everything that happens in your life. Failures think that everything happens by accident and chance. Successful people realize that they are responsible.

Everything happens as a result of something. If we can identify the cause, we can control the effect. We are responsible for what we choose to think and believe. One generally rises to the level that one expects. We are responsible for setting our expectations. Our success is dependent upon our level of confidence.

If you associate with positive-thinking people, you are definitely going to achieve success. On the contrary, the opposite happens. We are responsible for finding, planting, and nurturing the seeds that contain future victory, born from setbacks.

In short, in all areas of your life, whether they be financial, physical, emotional, or spiritual, you are responsible. Once you recognize this, accept it, and firmly believe it, you are on the road to success.

1. People with low self-esteem are compared to leaves because they ______.
A.are ready to change their mindsB.are easily affected by windy weather
C.don't have the power to face their fateD.can't exercise control over themselves
2. Losers would think that ______.
A.success is the result of hard workB.working hard will lead to success
C.their failure is only because of bad luckD.they don't make efforts to succeed
3. It can be inferred from paragraph 5 that ______.
A.whether we will succeed depends on our attitudes
B.one’s expectation is the key to future success
C.thoughts and beliefs are the result of creative mind
D.setting our expectations is essential before taking action
4. The last paragraph serves as ______.
A.the proof of the author's pointsB.the conclusion of the argument
C.an introduction to another topicD.a comparison between two views
5. Which is the best title for the text?
A.The secrets of success.B.Success is a choice.
C.Develop our confidence.D.How to achieve success.

6 . I am a writer. I spend a great deal of my time thinking about the power of language—the way it can evoke(唤起) an emotion, a visual image, a complex idea, or a simple truth. Language is the tool of my trade. And I use them all—all the Englishes I grew up with.

Born into a Chinese family that had recently arrived in California, I’ve been giving more thought to the kind of English my mother speaks. Like others, I have described it to people as “broken” English. But feel embarrassed to say that. It has always bothered me that I can think of no way to describe it other than “broken”, as if it were damaged and needed to be fixed, as if it lacked a certain wholeness. I’ve heard other terms used, “limited English,” for example. But they seem just as bad, as if everything is limited, including people’s perceptions(认识) of the limited English speaker.

I know this for a fact, because when I was growing up, my mother’s “limited” English limited my perception of her. I was ashamed of her English. I believed that her English rejected the quality of what she had to say. That is because she expressed them imperfectly her thoughts were imperfect. And I had plenty of evidence to support me: the fact that people in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her.

I started writing fiction in 1985. And for reasons I won’t get into today, I began to write stories using all the Englishes I grew up with: the English she used with me, which for lack of a better term might be described as “broken”, and what I imagine to be her translation of her Chinese, her internal(内在的) language, and for that I sought to preserve the essence, but neither an English nor a Chinese structure: I wanted to catch what language ability tests can never show; her intention, her feelings, the rhythms of her speech and the nature of her thoughts.

1. By saying “Language is the tool of my trade”, the author means that ________.
A.she uses English in foreign trade
B.she is fascinated by languages
C.she works as a translator
D.she is a writer by profession
2. The author used to think of her mother’s English as ________.
A.impoliteB.amusing
C.imperfectD.practical
3. Which of the following is TRUE according to Paragraph 3?
A.Americans do not understand broken English.
B.The author’s mother was not respected sometimes.
C.The author’s mother had positive influence on her
D.Broken English always reflects imperfect thoughts.
4. The author gradually realizes her mother’s English is ________.
A.well structuredB.in the old style
C.easy to translateD.rich in meaning
5. What is the passage mainly about?
A.The changes of the author’s attitude to her mother’s English.
B.The limitation of the author’s perception of her mother.
C.The author’s misunderstanding of “limited” English.
D.The author’s experiences of using broken English.

7 . Societies all over the world name places in similar ways. Quite often there is no official naming ceremony but places tend to be called names as points of reference by people. Then an organized body steps in and gives the place a name. Frequently it happens that a place has two names: One is named by the people and the other by the government. As in many areas, old habits die hard and the place continues to be called by its unofficial name long after the meaning is lost.

Many roads and places in Singapore(新加坡)are named in order that the pioneers will be remembered by future generations. Thus we have names such as Stamford Road and Raffles Place. This is in keeping with traditions in many countries ---- in both the West and the East.

Another way of naming places is naming them after other places. Perhaps they were named to promote friendships between the two places or it could be that the people who used to live there were originally from the places that the roads were named after. The mystery is clearer when we see some of the roads named in former British bases. If you step into Selector Airbase you will see Piccadilly Circus ---- obviously named by some homesick Royal Air Force personnel.

Some places were named after the activities that used to go on at those places. Bras Basah Road is an interesting example, “Base Basah” means “wet rice” in Malay(马来语). Now why would anyone want to name a road “Wet Rice Road”? The reason is simple. During the pioneering days, wet rice was laid out to dry along this road.

A few roads in Singapore are named by their shapes. There is “Circular Road” for one. Other roads may have part of their names to describe their shapes, like “Paya Lebar Crescent”. This road is called a crescent(月牙) because it begins on the main road, makes a crescent and comes back to join the main road again.

1. We learn from Paragraph 1 that _____.
A.the government is usually the first to name a place
B.many places tend to have more than one name
C.a ceremony will be held when a place is named
D.people prefer the place names given by the government
2. What does the underlined phrase “die hard” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.Change suddenly.B.Change significantly.
C.Disappear mysteriously.D.Disappear very slowly.
3. Which of the following places is named after a person?
A.Raffles Place.B.Selector Airbase.
C.Piccadilly Circus.D.Paya Lebar Crescent.
4. Bras Basah Road is named _______.
A.after a personB.after a placeC.after an activityD.by its shape
5. What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Some place names in Singapore are the same as in Britain.
B.Some places in Singapore are named for military purposes.
C.The way Singaporeans name their places is unique.
D.Young Singaporeans have forgotten the pioneers.

8 . D
Next time a customer comes to your office, offer him a cup of coffee. And when you’re doing your holiday shopping online, make sure you’re holding a large glass of iced tea. The physical sensation(感觉) of warmth encourages emotional warmth, while a cold drink in hand prevents you from making unwise decisions—those are the practical lesson being drawn from recent research by psychologist John A. Bargh.
Psychologists have known that one person’s perception(感知) of another’s “warmth” is a powerful determiner in social relationships. Judging someone to be either “warm” or “cold” is a primary consideration, even trumping evidence that a “cold” person may be more capable. Much of this is rooted in very early childhood experiences, Bargh argues, when babies’ conceptual sense of the world around them is shaped by physical sensations, particularly warmth and coldness. Classic studies by Harry Harlow, published in 1958, showed monkeys preferred to stay close to a cloth “mother” rather than one made of wire, even when the wire “mother” carried a food bottle. Harlow’s work and later studies have led psychologists to stress the need for warm physical contact from caregivers to help young children grow into healthy adults with normal social skills.
Feelings of “warmth” and “coldness” in social judgments appear to be universal. Although no worldwide study has been done, Bargh says that describing people as “warm” or “cold” is common to many cultures, and studies have found those perceptions influence judgment in dozens of countries.
To test the relationship between physical and psychological warmth, Bargh conducted an experiment which involved 41 college students. A research assistant who was unaware of the study’s hypotheses(假设), handed the students either a hot cup of coffee, or a cold drink, to hold while the researcher filled out a short information form: The drink was then handed back. After that, the students were asked to rate the personality of “Person A” based on a particular description. Those who had briefly held the warm drink regarded Person A as warmer than those who had held the iced drink.
“We are grounded in our physical experiences even when we think abstractly,” says Bargh.
1. According to Paragraph 1, a person’s emotion may be affected by ______.
A.the visitors to his officeB.the psychology lessons he has
C.his physical feeling of coldnessD.the things he has bought online
2. The author mentions Harlow’s experiment to show that ______.
A.adults should develop social skillsB.babies need warm physical contact
C.caregivers should be healthy adultsD.monkeys have social relationships
3. In Bargh’s experiment, the students were asked to ______.
A.evaluate someone’s personalityB.write down their hypotheses
C.fill out a personal information formD.hold coffee and cold drink alternatively
4. We can infer from the passage that ______.
A.abstract thinking does not come from physical experiences
B.feelings of warmth and coldness are studied worldwide
C.physical temperature affects how we see others
D.capable persons are often cold to others
5. What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Drinking for Better Social Relationships.
B.Experiments of Personality Evaluation.
C.Developing Better Drinking Habits.
D.Physical Sensations and Emotions.
