1 . The Hearst Castle
Hearst Castle is a park on the central California coast and a National Historic Landmark.It was designed by Julia Morgan for William Randolph Hearst from 1919 until 1947.Despite its location far from any urban center, the site attracts roughly one million visitors per year.

2 . Kobe Bryant, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on August 23, 1978, was a professional basketball player, nicknamed "Black Mamba" or "Little Flying Man ". He played for the Los Angeles Lakers throughout his NBA career from 1996 to 2016.
In 1996, Kobe Bryant entered the high school and then began his legendary NBA career. On behalf of his school, Kobe Bryant won many basketball games and got a very high total score. He broke the record of the southeast of Pennsylvania that Chamberlain had created and maintained for 38 years, which made Jerry West, the Lakers vice president, think highly of him. After Kobe Bryant became the dunk（扣篮）champion in the All-Star Game in 1997, his career took off. From 2000 to 2002, he and his team won the NBA championships for three years in a row.
Kobe Bryant maintained a lot of NBA personal records. He once got 81 scores in a game, the second highest single-game scoring in the NBA history. In the 2007-2008 season, he received the title of Most Valuable Player, which is the highest honor for NBA players. After that, he and his team continued to attain lots of remarkable achievements, including two NBA championships from 2009 to 2010.
Unfortunately, on January 27, 2020, this great man and other eight persons were killed in a helicopter crash in Calabasas. Kobe Bryant was then only 41 years old. Those who loved him all mourned the death of him. Though we have lost a superstar, his mamba spirit will live on. We will always remember his immortal（不朽的）words, "I know the appearance of Los Angeles at four o'clock in the morning every day."

4 . In an experiment to track the effects of insecticide (杀虫剂) on birds in the wild, scientists caught 24 sparrows as they migrated(迁徙) north from Mexico and the southern United States to Canada. The team fed half of those birds on a low amount of the commonly used agricultural insecticide and the other half with a slightly higher amount. An additional 12 birds were caught and fed on only sunflower oil. Within hours, the birds fed insecticide began to lose weight and ate less food. Birds given the higher amount lost 6 percent of their weight within six hours.
The findings suggest that insecticide, already effective in dropping bee populations, could also reduce bird populations. There is clear evidence that since 1966, the populations of nearly three-quarters of farmland birds have dropped.
The researchers fed the birds with carefully measured amounts of insecticide mixed with sunflower oil. In the wild, birds might feed on seeds coated with insecticide. Christy Morris-sey, a biologist at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada says, "Though the birds fed with the insecticide continued their migration, there's still much we don't know about how repeated exposures to the insecticide might affect a bird. "
After observing the birds in the lab, Morrissey and colleagues tracked the birds with lightweight trackers and kept records as they continued their spring migration. The highest fed birds stayed 3. 5 days longer near the site where they were caught-possibly to recover and regain strength than birds that weren't fed with the insecticide. Birds given the lower amount of insecticide stuck around for three days, and those which weren't fed with insecticide flew away after half a day. Tracking the tested birds showed that they all fell behind the others in their migration.

9 . The Day My Father Almost Drowned Me
Dad used to be a devoted fisherman. He tried to get me interested as well, but it never seemed much fun to me. The line always seemed to tangle（缠结），the worms（虫）would not hold still, the hooks （挂钩）were sharp, and Dad always seemed to want to go someplace far away, so that you had to get up in the middle of the night.
One time when I was about ten years old, my dad took me fishing to the American Falls reservoir （I think that's where it was. I don’t remember whether we caught any fish or not. I think I was having more fun rowing the kayak, which is rowed facing forward with a double-ended oar（船桨）,unlike an ordinary row-boat, which I never liked because you couldn't see where you were going. But mid-afternoon the wind came up a little. We were maybe a hundred feet from shore, when the wind caught my hat and blew it into the water just a few feet away. Dad said, “Don't worry. I'll get it!" and reached out for the hat.
Now, a kayak is a very skillfully balanced thing, and Dad's reaching for the hat was just enough to upset the balance and tip us over. I didn't know how to swim yet, and thought I was a goner. Dad did, too, I think, because he was grabbing for me madly until we realized that the water was only about four feet deep.
Mother was not too pleased when we got home, soaking wet, and I think she thought Dad was creating the story a little so that it wouldn't sound like he had really almost drowned（溺死）me.
