2 . People in Florida recently had to escape from flash floods after two feet of rain fell in 26 hours. Heavy rains caused a hillside to break down and bury a community in Washington State earlier this year. Rainstorms and floods attacked Colorado last year, and sudden floods swept Atlanta in 2009, and Nashville in 2010.

In the National Climate Assessment, published last week, researchers in the United States reported that “large increases in heavy rains have occurred in the Northeast, Midwest and Great Plains, where heavy downpours have caused flooding events and other relevant disasters”.

In the United States, the increase in water vapor (蒸汽) has been on the order of 3 percent or 4 percent since the 1970s, when most of the human-caused global warming has occurred since then. That may not sound like a big jump, but the effect is enormous. Two leading scientists, Kevin E. Trenberth at the National Center for Atmospheric Research and David R. Easterling at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, ran some calculations and agreed that the global warming has, on average, put more than a trillion gallons (加仑) of extra water into the air over the 48 states, probably closer to two trillion. That extra water has to fall as rain or snow if the condition is suitable.

“It rains harder than it used to,” said Dr. Trenberth, who could not resist adding: “When it rains, it pours.” So they suggested intensifying standards for the designs of dams, and hardening roads and culverts (涵洞) against the possibility of more flash floods.

The warming of the planet has slowed in recent years, but scientists think that is likely temporary. They expect it to get much, much warmer as this century progresses, and that can only mean that the rains will fall harder still.

6 . To answer a suit(诉讼)against its “no outside food and drink ”policy, Shanghai Disneyland said on Monday that the policy is similar to that of many other theme parks across China and that guests are welcome to enjoy their own food and drink outside the park.

The suit was brought by a law school student in Shanghai. She was told by park workers to either throw away the snacks she had brought in her backpack or finish them. In order to get into the park, she gave up the snacks, which were worth 46.3 yuan. What’s more, she failed to call the police and the municipal(市政的)official complaint hotlines.

The student, surnamed Wang, was a junior from East China University of Political Science and Law. She made the trip to the park in late January and brought the case(案件)to the People’s Court(法院)of Pudong New Area where the theme park is located. She called for the park’s rule to be changed and for the park to pay for her loss. The case was heard on April 23 and the decision is pending(待定).

Since a number of Chinese media reported the case over the weekend, the case has caused lots of discussions. They wonder whether it is reasonable for the world’s second largest Walt Disney park not to allow visitors to bring their own food. Most agree that the food and drinks sold in the park are too expensive, making the purpose of making money behind the policy appear too proud.

This is not the first time that Shanghai Disneyland has got sued(起诉)over the policy. In June 2018, a lawyer from Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, tried to take the theme park to court by the same reason. But the court turned down his appeal.

7 . Do you remember the last time you received a postcard? The UK’s family-owned oldest postcard firm, which has been publishing postcards and calendars since 1880, will close this December. The reason? It says instead of penning a card, people are putting photos up on Facebook or Instagram or using WhatsApp to show friends and family at home just how much fun they’re having.

If you get a postcard from someone who’s away somewhere, it’s as much the thought that they’ve gone through the hassle (麻烦) of choosing a postcard, working out where to get a stamp from, finding a postbox and then the postcard making that journey through to you. That’s the value of the postcard. But that time has gone.

Brothers Charles and Harry Salmon, the fifth generation of the family to run the firm, said the popularity of social media had had a huge impact on the business. People are also tending to take shorter holidays, meaning they are likely to have arrived home long before their postcards. As a result the business was no longer viable.

“Increasingly challenging trading conditions and changes to the nature and size of the market for its publications have resulted in uncertainty over the future of its trade,’’ the brothers wrote in a letter to suppliers and newsagents.

As a result they were announcing a proposal to withdraw from publishing. The number of postcards sold each year is reported to have seen a sharp decline to about five million from 20 million just 25 years ago. But the firm said that as well as the drop in the number of postcards sent, “we have also had to consider that there are no more members of the family who wish to join the business.”

1. What’s the value of sending a postcard?
A.It’s a symbol of sympathy.B.It’s a journey of love.
C.It’s an act of patience.D.It’s a way of passing time.
2. What does the underlined word “viable” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.likely to exist.B.worthy of praise.

4. Where does this text probably come from?
A.A book review.B.A business column.

8 . I have always found the Chinese to be a very polite people. In particular, Chinese frequently compliment (称赞) foreign friends on their language skills, knowledge of Chinese culture, professional accomplishments, and personal health. Curiously, however, Chinese are as loath to accept a compliment as they are eager to give one. As many of my Chinese friends have explained, this is a sign of the Chinese virtue of modesty.

I have noticed a difference, though, in the degree to which modesty is emphasized in the United States and China. In the US, we tend to place more emphasis on “seeking the truth from fact”, thus, Americans tend to accept a compliment with gratitude.

Chinese, on the other hand, tend to reject the compliment, even when they know they deserve the credit or recognition which has been awarded them. I can imagine a Chinese basketball fan meeting Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls. He might say, “Mr. Jordan, I am so happy to meet you. I just want to tell you, you are the best basketball player in the world; you’re the greatest!” to which Jordan would probably respond, “Thank you very much. I really appreciate it! I just to try to do my best every time I step on the court.” If an American met Deng Yaping, China’s premier pingpong player, he might say much the same thing: “Ms. Deng, you’re the best!” but as a Chinese, Deng would probably say, “No, I really don’t play all that well. You’re too much kind.”

Plainly, Americans and Chinese have different ways of responding to praise. Ironically, many Americans might consider Ms. Deng’s response the less modest, because it is less truthful—and therefore less sincere. Americans generally place sincerity above manners; genuine gratitude for the praise serves as a substitute for protestations of modesty. After all, in the words of one of my closest Chinese friends, modesty taken to the extreme is pride.

1. What does the underlined word “loath” in paragraph 1 refer to?
A.Polite.B.Uncertain.C.Curious.D.Unwilling.
2. Why does the author mention Michael Jordan and Deng Yaping?
A.To note they do as much as they can each time they play against others.
B.To remind readers they are the best players in basketball and table tennis.
C.To explain they deserve the credit or recognition for their great contributions.
D.To show they as Chinese and Americans are different in accepting praise.
3. Why do Americans consider Ms. Deng’s response the less modest?
A.They think sincerity matters the most.B.They think her reply is against the fact.
C.They think she is too modest to believe.D.They think manners is more important.
4. In what column can you find this passage in a newspaper?
A.Education.B.Sports.C.Culture.D.People.

9 . Children are now more likely to want to work in social media or gaming than traditiona Careers. According to a new survey, many from seven to 11 -year-olds are looking at modern technology when they think about future jobs, rather than professions such as police officer or doctor.

The survey involved 13.000 UK primary school children. They were asked to draw pictures of the job they wanted to do when they grow up and then tell the reasons. It concluded that children's career aspirations (志向)are often based on factors such as gender stereotypes (性别角色定型)or what they've seen in the media, TV and film.

"For more and more children and young people, online celebrities and You Tube gaming videobloggers' have taken the place of TV and movie stars, "the report said. "It could be argued that this is due to the growing fame and attraction of YouTube and video blogging stars, who are especially popular among younger audiences. Also, this may also speak to children's present worlds.

Many from seven to 11-year-olds will spend their time gaming and perhaps at the same time watching celebrity gaming bloggers instructing them how to do it."

The survey found that 5% of children wanted to be in the police, with the same percentage on becoming doctors. A gender breakdown shows the top job choice for girls was teacher (19%). follow ed by vet (11%) and sportsman (9%) and police (8%).

This highlights the pressing need for closer ties between employers and schools, to ensure that all children can have role models in a wide range of fields to help them develop an awareness of career choices at an early age. "This is vital to ensure that all children—regardless of gender and backgrounds—can fulfill their full potential. "

D.Play games and watch celebrity gaming bloggers instructing them how to do it.
3. What's the purpose of the survey?
A.To strengthen the importance of studying hard.

4. In which column can you probably read the article?

10 . The 15-day Spring Festival is the biggest holiday of the year for many Chinese to leave from their jobs to travel home and see their loved ones. But along with gathering come a lot of traditions aimed at making sure the year ahead is lucky and happy.

Here are some key dos and don’ts that many Chinese follow before and after the Lunar New Year.

DOs
Set off fireworks

The more fireworks or firecrackers you set off, the better.

Not only do you light up the night sky with a symphony of color, but the loud banging sounds are thought to scare off evil spirits.

Eat dumplings

Eating dumplings is a popular tradition in northern China because dumplings not only taste good but also look like pieces of gold.

Clean your home

Sweep, mop, vacuum, steam-do anything and everything to make sure your home is clean before the midnight on Lunar New Year eve. The aim here is to free your home from any bad luck that’s accumulated over the past year.

DON’Ts
Wash or cut your hair

Leave your hair as it is on the first day of the New Year.

The Chinese character for hair is the same first character in the word for prosperity(发达).

This means washing or cutting it off is seen as washing your fortune away.

Clean post-New Year

Cleaning of any kind on the first day is strictly forbidden.

You clean your home to avoid any bad luck before the New Year - now you want to be sure not to wipe, sweep or wash away any of the good luck that arrives after midnight.

Buy books

It’s bad luck to buy them during the 15-day Spring Festival.

The Chinese word for "book" (shū) sounds exactly the same as the word for "lose’"-so buying a book is considered an invitation to bad luck.

Also, avoid giving books as gifts to anyone, because it’d be like wishing bad luck upon them.

1. Why is the Spring Festival the best time for many Chinese people according to the text?
A.They can enjoy a lor of delicious dishes.
B.They can get together with their family members.
C.It’s time for them to say good-bye to the past year.
D.The festival will bring them good luck and happiness.
2. You are expected to do the following on the first day of the New Year EXCEPT        .
A.setting off fireworksB.enjoying tasty dumplings
C.cleaning your homeD.leaving your books untouched
3. In which section of a newspaper can we see the passage?
A.Advertisement.B.Literature.
C.Culture.D.Travel.
