2 . In the UK, Bonfire Night or Guy Fawkes Night is celebrated on 5 November and the night skies are filled with color. It’s a special day in honor of a historic event.

In 1606 English Catholics were angry because the King of England, James I, was treating them badly. In protest (抗议), a group of men made a plan, known as the “Gunpowder Plot”, to blow up the House of Parliament in London. An huge explosion was planned for 5 November, the day the king was due to open parliament.

The group chose a man called Guy Fawkes to light the gunpowder. The plot did not succeed — the gunpowder was found before it exploded and all the men involved were arrested, beaten and executed. To celebrate his survival, King James ordered the people of England to have a bonfire on the night of 5 November.

On 5 November people remember the plot by celebrating Bonfire Night. All over Britain there are firework displays and bonfires with models of Guy Fawkes, made from clothes and filled with newspaper, which are burned on the fire. The fireworks are a reminder of the gunpowder that Guy Fawkes hid in the cellar of Parliament.

Children used to take home-made Guys onto the streets and ask for “a penny for the Guy” to collect money to buy fireworks. At the Edenbridge Display in Kent last year, a 9-meter “celebrity” Guy was burned of Wayne Rooney wearing Shrek-style ears and a Manchester United football shirt.

It’s normally quite cold in November in Britain, so on Bonfire Night people wear hats, scarves and gloves to spend the evening outside. Traditional Bonfire Night food is hot baked potatoes. There are also toffee apples and in the north of England they eat a special type of cake called parkin.

5 . “How much money am I getting this year? That’s the question I ask my mom every February. And every year she replies,”You will see” in her Chinese accent.

February usually marks the month of the New Year according to the Chinese calendar. But for me, Chinese New Year is a payday. Usually I receive red envelopes (“hongbao”) which are the equivalent ( 同等物) of Christmas presents. Instead of wondering what the present will be, it is the amount of money inside that is the mystery. I always have to wait weeks to find out how much money my parents have in store for me.

I never knew how the traditions of Chinese New Year derived,_and I never gave it much thought, until my mom forced me to attend a special Chinese school where I learned about the origins of the traditions behind the famous celebration and had a knowledge of how the hanging of red lanterns or fireworks developed. But before that, the only part of the holiday that had ever concerned me was the “hongbao” and as selfish as it may sound.

But now Chinese New Year is a wonderful holiday for me not because of the “hongbao”, but the profound Chinese culture I have learned from the special school.

The excitement that comes with expecting Chinese New Year is one I will never get tired of. While the real celebrations are taking place in China, my family holds its own traditions. I can always count on my mom to make delicious Chinese food every year, and there is consolation (安慰) in knowing that as my sisters and I open our “hongbaos”, our cousins so many miles away are doing the same.

1. What did the author care about most on Chinese New Year at first?
A.The amount of money she received.
B.The traditions behind the celebration.
C.Various activities during Chinese New Year.
D.The presents that her parents would give her.
2. What does the underlined word “derived” in Para. 3 probably mean?
A.Worked.B.Continued.
C.Began.D.Changed.
3. What can we infer about the author’s mom?
A.She has a strong feeling towards China.
B.She knows little about Chinese traditions.
C.She always gives her children a lot of money.
D.She tends to surprise her children on western festivals.
4. What’s the best title of the passage?
A.New Year Hongbao
B.My Mom and China
C.Closer Attachment to China
D.Unforgettable Moments

7 . I was born and raised in England in a culture where privacy and “keeping yourself to yourself” were valued traditions. Speaking to strangers was not encouraged. People were most hospitable and friendly.

However, I have been lucky enough to spend some time in both Italy and the US, where I found traditions of hospitality and politeness to be very different.

I experienced Italian hospitality firsthand. On a crowded railway carriage travelling, one afternoon, from Genoa to Florence, sinking gratefully into an empty seat, I was scolded in rapid Italian by a gentleman who was returning to this seat ---- it had not been “spare” after all. I apologized in English, and got up to allow him back into the seat. The gentleman obviously had no understanding of the English language, but he, too, realized my genuine (真诚的) mistake. He smiled and gestured for me to remain in the seat, and he himself remained standing in the corridor for the remainder of the journey. The other occupants of the carriage smiled and nodded at me and made me feel quite welcome amongst them. I feel that if this had been in England, a foreigner who made a mistake would not always be so kindly treated.

Transport also featured in the differences I noticed between English and American culture. I flew to New York on a plane with mainly English passengers. We sat together in near silence. Nobody spoke to me nor, as I expected, to anyone else they did not know. They felt it was not polite to interrupt someone else’s privacy. However, when I travelled across the United States, whether by plane or bus, I was never short of conversation. Conversation was going on all around me and whoever sat next to me was happy to introduce themselves and ask me about myself. They obviously felt it would have been rude not to speak to another person, whether they were strangers or not.

1. What do we know about the occupants when the author was travelling in Italy?
A.They were all on the side of the gentleman.
B.They all laughed at the author for his mistake.
C.They would not bear a mistake like the author’s in public
D.They all showed their understanding of the author’s mistake.
2. How does the author finally believe the Italian people are?
A.Cold.B.RudeC.Helpful.D.Hospitable.
3. Why did English passengers sit in near silence according to the last paragraph?
A.They were too tired to speak to anyone.
B.They were all strangers to each other.
C.Privacy was a valued tradition in England.
D.Everybody was deeply lost in though.
4. What can be the best title for the text?
A.Different Ways of Hospitality and Politeness
B.Co-understanding Each Other
C.My Unforgettable Travelling Experience Abroad
D.The Importance of Privacy

10 . Whizzfizzing Festival

As one of the Home Counties to the north and west of London, Buchinghamshire is known for the rolling Chiltern Hills, its pretty villages, and the much-loved children’s author Roald Dahl.

The writer who penned Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Witches, Matilda and The Big Friendly Giant is the inspiration for the Whizzfizzing Festival, which will transform the market-town of Aylesbury into all kinds of music, color and fun on Saturday, 1 July.

Formerly known as The Roald Dahl Festival, this year’s event will involve a broad range of children’s films and bring to life some of their best-loved characters — from Alice in Wonderland and Gruffalo to The Big Friendly Giant and Harry Potter.

Things to See and Do

The festivals start at 11 a.m. with a colorful children’s parade. More than 650 local school children and teachers, many in fancy dress, will march through the town carrying giant carnival puppets(木偶), with thousands of audiences lining the street to watch.

The parade will be followed by a range of child-friendly activities and workshops held in venues across the town.

Don’t be late for the Mad Hatters Tea Party in the Bucks County Museum, catch a splendid screening of a Roald Dahl film in the Old Court House, watch leading children’s authors, including Julian Clary, and read in the Market Square.

CBeebies’ children’s chef Katy Ashworth will once again cook up a storm with her interactive Concoction Kitchen, located outside Hale Leys Shopping Centre. Little chefs will have lots of opportunities to get involved in preparing, cooking — and best of all, tasting — Katy’s wonderful dishes.

With hands-on arts and crafts workshops, storytelling sessions, live music, a fancy dress competition, street theatre and more, there is something for everyone.
