3 . Spend any time in London, England’s capital, and you’ll quickly gather that it’s a multicultural (多元文化的) community. Look around at your fellow passengers on the Tube(地铁) or the bus. They’re of every skin color and dress differently to one another. Listen, and you’ll hear many other languages besides English spoken. Some of these people, no doubt, will be tourists who are in London to see the sights. But others — in fact probably most — will be living their lives there, along with millions of others.
Along with white British people, there are Britons from, or with parents and grandparents from, the Caribbean, India, China and most other places. This makes London a fascinating place in which to live. The reason is that when people settle in a place, they don’t just buy a house and live there, but bring aspects of the culture of their “old country” with them.
The most visible sign of this is the number of restaurants offering dishes from different parts of the world. In a city in which it’s estimated 250 different languages are spoken, you can expect a similarly wide range of foods to be available. You would expect in one of the world’s leading cities to encounter(遇到) French, Italian, Chinese and Indian eateries. But in London you’ll also find Polish, Patagonian and Palestinian restaurants.
However, London’s multiculturalism isn’t just about food. Many types of people are gathered in one space, but the way they live differently shows in that space. They worship(崇拜) differently, for one thing. Alongside the famous old English churches by Nicholas Hawksmoor and Christopher Wren — responsible for one of the capital’s most famous landmark, St Paul’s Cathedral—you’ll find mosques(清真寺), temples and synagogues (犹太教堂).
London even speaks its own special kind of English. Language experts created the term “Multicultural London English” to identify the dialect of English that appeared at the end of the last century.
All of this makes London a very surprising and varied place to call your home. But, in a way, this has long been true. In the 18th century, the compiler(编纂者) of the first English dictionary, Samuel Johnson, once said: “ He who is tired of London is tired of life.”

Have you heard an old saying “The grass looks greener on the other side of the fence”? It means other places often look better, more interesting than the place where you live. “Let’s go to KFC for dinner and then watch some Japanese cartoons!” We all know it: more and more Chinese kids love American and Japanese food and movies. Some people worry that young Chinese are beginning to feel that way. They see young Chinese ignoring(忽视)Chinese culture and, instead, buying Japanese cartoon books, watching Korean soap operas and even celebrating western holidays.
Foreign books and soap operas are good, but Chinese writers and actors are just as good. As for holidays, Christmas is nice, but it can never have the meaning for Chinese that Spring Festival has, and the West has nothing to compare with the Mid-Autumn Festival. China has lots of cool things in its culture: calligraphy, Beijing Opera, quick meals on the streets, and even Jay Chou! And let’s not forget the part of Chinese culture I like best: its friendliness. Not all countries are as warm as China.
It’s good to enjoy other cultures and learn from them, but they can never replace your own culture. It’s good to look on the other side of the fence, but make sure you take a good long look. You will find that the grass isn’t always greener.
Although some people become worried about that, I don’t think they should. Will we get more powerful without learning from other countries? Will Chinese people live more happily without American fast food? Besides, it’s fun to learn about different cultures. Chinese kids can learn about other cultures and have fun, but they also need to learn more about their own culture. Be proud of Chinese culture and of being Chinese!

7 . National Symbols
When many people in the west think of China, the animal that they think of is the dragon.
For Chinese people, however, the dragon is not an evil monster.
Almost all countries in the world have an animal symbol represent the country, and it is particularly obvious during sports. The English see lions as brave, proud animals and the England football teams have three lions on the front of their football shirts.
All countries are proud of their symbols, which they feel reflect national characteristics. Recently, a professor claimed that using the dragon as a national symbol could make western countries have a negative view of China.
A.Australia is famous for kangaroos, of course. |
B.There are many other countries to use animal symbols. |
C.China isn’t the only country to have the dragon as its symbol. |
D.It’s a cultural and spiritual symbol for prosperity and good luck. |
E.For them, the dragon is an aggressive monster that breathes fire. |
F.The kangaroo is not only loved, but highly respected in Australia. |
G.But in an Internet survey, 90% of Chinese people wanted to keep the dragon. |

9 . Shopping for clothes is not the same experience for a man as it is for a woman.
A man goes shopping because he needs something. His purpose is settled and decided in advance. He knows what he wants, and his aim is to find it and buy it; the price is a secondary consideration. All men simply walk into a shop and ask the assistant for what they want. If the shop has it in stock (有现货的), the business of trying it on follows at once. All being well, the deal can be and often is completed in less than five minutes, with hardly any chat and to everyone’s satisfaction.
For a man, slight problems may begin when the shop does not have what he wants, or does not have exactly what he wants. In that case the salesman, as the name implies, tries to sell the customer something else. No good salesman brings out a substitute impolitely; he does so with skill: “I know this jacket is not the style you want, Sir, but would you like to try it on for size? It happens to be the color you mentioned.” Few men have patience with this treatment, and the usual response is: “This is the right color and may be the right size, but I should be wasting my time and yours by trying it on.”
Now how does a woman buy clothes? In almost every aspect she does so in the opposite way. Her shopping is not often based on need. She has never fully made up her mind what she wants, and she is only “having a look round”. She is always open to persuasion; indeed she is influenced by what the saleswoman tells her, even by what companions tell her. She will try on any number of things. What she wants is to find something that everyone thinks suits her. Contrary to a lot of jokes, most women have an excellent sense of value when they buy clothes. They are always on the lookout for the unexpected bargain. Faced with a roomful of dresses, a woman may easily spend hours going from one shop to another, to and fro. It is a tiring process, but apparently an enjoyable one. Most dress shops provide chairs for the waiting husbands.

A.He usually does not buy anything. |
B.So long as the style is right, he buys the thing. |
C.He buys a similar thing because of the color he wants. |
D.At least two of his requirements must be met before he buys. |
A.Women rarely consider buying cheap clothes. |
B.They welcome suggestions from almost anyone. |
C.They try to buy clothes for more than its real value. |
D.Women buy things without giving the matter proper thought. |
A.Women buy more clothes than men. |
B.Women bargain for their clothes, but men do not. |
C.Men go shopping based on need, but women often not. |
