5 . Japan’s biggest airline is betting that the future of travel isn’t traveling at all. For the last month, a married couple has been interacting with a robot—called an Avatar—that’s controlled by their daughter hundreds of miles away. Made by ANA Holdings Inc., it looks like a vacuum cleaner with an iPad attached. But the screen displays the daughter’s face as they chat, and its wheels let her move about the house as though she’s really there.
“Virtual travel” is nothing new, of course. Storytellers, travel writers and artists have been stimulating the senses of armchair tourists for centuries. It’s only in recent decades that frequent, safe travel has become available to the non- wealthy.
Yet even as the world’s middle classes climb out of the armchair and into economy-class seat, there are signs of a post-travel society emerging. Concerns about environmental sustainability cause loss to airlines which release much carbon. And the aging of abundant societies is both restricting physical travel and creating demand for alternative ways to experience the world. For the travel industry, virtual reality offers an attractive response to these trends.
Of course, new technologies encourage far-out claims. ANA doesn’t plan to start selling Avatars until next year. Profits, too, will probably be difficult to make: By one estimate, the global market for this kind of technology will be worth only about $300 million by 2023. By contrast, ANA’s traditional travel business brought in more than $19 billion last year.
But if the business value for virtual vacations is still weak, the market for technologies that bridge physical distances between families and coworkers seems likely to only expand. ANA’s robots may not replace its airplanes any time soon, but they’ll almost certainly be a part of travel’s high-tech future.

6 . While temperatures continue to climb, visitors are still coming to see Death Valley National Park on the California-Nevada border. The park is known as the hottest place on Earth. This past weekend, the temperatures climbed to 53.33℃. Most visitors at this time of year make it only a short distance to any area in the park before returning to the cool air in their vehicles.
Early information from the park service shows that across the nation’s 424 national parks, at least four people have died this year from heat-related causes. That includes a 65-year-old man from San Diego who was found dead at Death Valley earlier this month.
Death Valley National Park suggests visitors be careful and not have expectations of rescue. While park rangers (护林员) drive on park roads and can aid tourists in need, it is unsure that lost visitors will get help in time.
Physical activity can make the heat feel even worse and leave people exhausted. Alessia Dempster, who was visiting from Edinburgh, Scotland, said, “It’s very hot especially when there’s a gentle wind. You would think maybe that would give you some slight relief from the heat, but it just really does feel like an air blow dryer just going back in your face.”
Death Valley is a narrow area that is below sea level and surrounded by high mountains, the park service’s website says. The dry air and small plant coverage let sunlight heat up the park surface. The heat then becomes trapped in the valley.
Still, several areas in Death Valley continue to draw tourists. Badwater Basin, made up of salt flats, is considered the lowest point in all of North America. The 183-meter Ubehebe Crater dates back over 2,000 years. And Zabriskie Point is a great sunrise viewing spot.
Josh Miller, a visitor from Indianapolis who has been to 20 national parks so far, shared that feeling. “It’s hot, but the scenery is awesome,” he said.
1. What do most visitors do in Death Valley?A.Cool themselves in time. | B.Do lots of physical exercises. |

C.To advise people to tour Death Valley more often. |
D.To show the danger of traveling in Death Valley. |
A.Its covering area. | B.Its attractive spots. |
C.The reason why it is so hot. | D.The service of its park’s website. |
A.It has a short history. | B.It is worth visiting. |
C.It draws fewer and fewer tourists. | D.It is unsuitable for viewing sunrise. |
7 . Yosemite National Park
Yosemite is all about restoration this year. This month the park’ s main corridor is being repaired. The park’ s gallery reopened to the public in April after being remodeled to allow full accessibility for the disabled. Even John Muir, known as the father of the national parks, is being revived(使复活)by the actor Lee Stetson, who will answer audience questions about the park and its history at the Yosemite Theater.
Petrified Forest National Park
Petrified Forest National Park is now mapping self-guided hikes to its more remote destinations, in part to remind visitors that the parks are theirs to wander. In August, a new field institute will begin offering classes led by geologists, photographers and other experts. And next year, you will see electric vehicle charging stations at the north and south entrances of the park.
Acadia National Park
Acadia National Park is to begin managing a new campground on Maine’ s Schoodic Peninsula this fall. The site will offer almost 100 recreational vehicles and tent sites, as well as new hiking and biking trails connected to Gouldsboro Village and existing park trails leading to the peninsula’ s tip.
Mesa Verde National Park
Wetherill Mesa in Mesa Verde National Park will have an extended season this year(through mid-October), giving cyclists much time to enjoy new access to the park’ s six-mile Long House Loop, a paved path formerly used for tram service, and the backcountry routes on the park’ s most popular hike. Naturally, plans are in the works to open an on-site bike rental operation within the year.
1. What do we know about Yosemite National Park?A.Its gallery is accessible to the disabled. |

Last summer vacation, I decided to visit my best friend in Barcelona. Aline sent me a screenshot (屏幕截图) of the ticket she was about to buy for me, from Saturday to Wednesday. I approved of the selection, she bought it, and I packed. The next day I headed to the airport, a little later than planned.
When I got to the airport with only my carry-on bag, it was 35 minutes before the gate closed. I headed directly to the security checkpoint. The electronic machine marked a big fat red × and told me to see an airline official. I did what I was told to do and stood in line at the airline counter (柜台), while one of the only two ladies available left. My heart was racing as I kept looking at the clock. A man, loud and rude, arrived with an airport employee and cut ahead, shouting at the lady and taking 10 minutes of my precious time.
By the time I arrived at the counter it was 8:02 and the gate closed at 8:05. The lady asked me what was wrong, and I told her. She then scanned (扫描) my ticket and told me the problem was that the gate had closed. I complained and told her I had arrived earlier.
“Where were you then?”
“In line, waiting for you.”
She didn’t say anything else, except to help change my ticket. I didn’t panic; instead I went into action mode. I searched for other flights. Just one flight would leave in 35 minutes. I was already at the airport, so I bought the ticket. I then tried to check in: check-in closes 40 minutes before the flight.
I took a deep breath, stopped running around, grabbed a taxi home, and bought my third ticket from Sunday to Sunday, extending my stay.

9 . When is the best time to visit Canada? It’s really hard to say, but your time can depend on what parts of Canada you plan to visit.
If you are foreign visitors who are traveling in Canada, it’s best to travel from south to north in spring and from north to south in autumn. The south starts warming up earlier in spring, and the north starts cooling off earlier in autumn.
If you want to travel across Canada in autumn, you need to think about the weather in different Canadian places. If you are visiting British Columbia, the Alberta Rockies, Ontario and Quebec, it’s best to start in Vancouver and travel towards the Rockies. It would be helpful to visit the Canadian Rockies at the end of September and certainly on Canadian Thanks-giving that happens on the second Monday in October, which differs from American Thanksgiving in November. Some attractions in the mountains start closing at the beginning of October.
In spring, it will be good to travel in the opposite direction. You can start visiting Quebec and Ontario in May, and travel westwards so that you get to the Canadian Rockies in June. If you travel around the coast of British Columbia and the Canadian Rockies, you should remember that the coast warms up much earlier than the mountains do.
When you are designing your trip, it helps to know the average temperature and the highest and lowest temperatures in the destinations you will visit, because temperatures will affect your holiday experience and the hours of daylight. In Canada, days are short and nights are long in winter, but in summer they are opposite.
