2 . When it comes to transportation in New York City, most people choose yellow cabs or the affordable subway system. But I've realised that biking is one of the best ways to see the city. It can be a kind of workout, and it can also be such a great way to discover new places and really enjoy the journey throughout the city. Here are a few of my favourite routes, tips, and tricks.

Central Park Loop(环线)

The 6.1mile loop is a standard for city cyclists of all fitness levels. A comfortable place in the middle of crowded Manhattan, the Central Park Loop is a great way to cycle without worrying about taxi doors suddenly opening or dealing with car traffic. There are so many ponds, lakes and complex bridges that you won't spot on a picnic in Sheep Meadow.

Prospect Park Loop

It's like Central Park but without tourists. My boyfriend and I regularly bike down to Prospect Park to do the loop, and it's my favourite way to relax after a stressful day. Prospect Park was designed by the same man who did Central Park, so there are a lot of similarities—gently rolling hills, plenty of shade, lakes, and ponds.

Governors Island

Governors Island is one of the few spaces in the New York City area where there are basically no cars! While the island is easy enough to walk around, it's not that big. But it's just big enough to make a few loops really enjoyable.

Manhattan Bridge

The Brooklyn Bridge might be the famous one. And the Williamsburg Bridge is a necessity for people, but the slope(斜坡) makes it easy to take exercise. Manhattan Bridge isn't much of a looker, but it's my favourite bridge to bike across: fairly easy incline, good views.

1. The underlined word “workout” in Paragraph 1 can be replaced by “________”.
A.experimentB.exercise
C.planD.idea
2. What makes the Williamsburg Bridge suitable to exercise?
A.A road that inclines.B.Having no bus to take.
C.Being difficult to walk.D.Many bikes for people to ride.
3. Which of the following might serve as the best title for this passage?
A.The Best Biking Routes in New York City
B.Transportation in New York City
C.Biking Can Be a Kind of Workout
D.How to See the City Better

5 . They say that "travel is the best teacher" and there is no better example of this idea than the Ming dynasty travel writer and geographer Xu Xiake (1587-1641). His book The Travel Notes of Xu Xiake, not only encouraged a love of travelling among Chinese people but provided important scientific information about the country's land and geography.

Born into a wealthy Jiangyin family, Xu became interested in books about different places at an early age and wanted to travel. When he was 18, however. Xu's father died and so, it seemed, did his travelling dreams. He now was responsible for the family farm and taking care of his 60-year-old mother as tradition required.

But his mother had different ideas. Understanding her son’s love of travel and valuing the knowledge he could get from such experiences, this modern-thinking woman refused to keep her son at home. She agreed that Xu could travel for three months every year, when there was less farm work.

So at the age of twenty and with his mother's support, Xu set off for the first time, leaving behind not only his mother but his new wife as well. He would repeat this goodbye each year for most of the next 30 years. During this time, he travelled throughout the Ming kingdom, carefully studying the lands he passed through and recording his experiences and many discoveries in a diary. This diary, which once had over 500,000 words, would eventually become The Travel Notes of Xu Xiake.

Although rich, Xu avoided comfortable travel, preferring to go almost everywhere on foot. This way he could research the environment in detail and get a true picture of the natural world. Many of his trips were to hard-to-reach mountain areas, and through wild forests where few people lived. His willingness to face hardships came at a cost however. Progress was slow and tiring and he was frequently sick, robbed and beaten during his journeys

Sadly Xu became seriously ill during his last and longest journey, a 4-year trip through the Southwest of China. He died in 1641, soon after returning to his hometown for the last time. When his diary was finally printed years after his death, much of it had been destroyed or lost. Although incomplete, it still made Xu a travelling legend around the world.

1. What is the passage mainly about?
A.The influence of Xu's book The Travel Notes of Xu Xiake.

C.The important discoveries made by Xu Xiake.

2. Which of the following best describes Xu's mother?
A.Supportive and open-minded.B.Kind but uneducated.
C.Helpful and hardworking.D.Strict but interesting.
3. Why did Xu prefer walking during his travels?
A.It gave him the chance to meet different kinds of people.
B.It allowed him to see and study the environment in detail.
C.It helped him to save money and travel for a longer time.
D.It was the only way to reach the places he was interested in.
4. What is true about Xu's book The Travel Notes of Xu xiake
A.It was mainly about the different people of China.
B.It made Xu very famous during his lifetime.
C.It was the first travel book ever written in China.
D.It was only made public after Xu died.

6 . Lots of people dream of a beach vacation, but hesitate to take one because they don't want to leave a pet behind.     1     You can enjoy some fun in the sun on a beach vacation with your pet. It is easier than ever to find a beach that welcome your pets, and a little extra planning and preparation is all that is required to have a wonderful time on vacation with your pet.

7 . My best friend and I made our first trip to Ireland less than a year ago. I wasn’t very excited about it at the very beginning. But my uncle wanted me to go and offered to pay for my trip. Then I did. All of the words “magical, charming or memorable” don’t even touch what Ireland is. Our favorites were Kilkenny, Cobh, and Killarney. We did a self-drive tour, which was not as hard as people made it sound.

We stayed in a castle in Dublin for two days, where my ancestors came from. The town we thought we might be bored in was Kilkenny, but we loved every minute we were there. There were so many places to explore and the pictures we took were beautiful.

Our driver was so informative and entertaining that he knew just where to stop for the best photos. And seeing the little village of Cobh and knowing it was the last stop for the Titanic were so touching. We loved the visitor’s center there and the little shops. We never got any bad food there. It was so mouth-watering at every stop! And when we stayed in Westmeath and looked out for our window to see the Trim Castle and found some scenes from Brave Heart were filmed there, we were so impressed. Again, more beautiful pictures were taken in that tiny town.

We love the country, the people, the food, and the magic! We would go back very soon. I was so indebted to my uncle who had given me the chance to be here.

The one piece of advice I would offer is to bring your own washcloths. Only one of our hotels supplied them, because people there think they are not environmentally-friendly. I have no words to adequately describe our trip. Go, explore the small villages, eat and enjoy! I still look at my pictures and can’t believe I was actually there.

1. Which statement is NOT true according to the passage?   ________
A.The writer didn’t show great interest in visiting Ireland at first.
B.The trip was more exciting than they expected.
C.They had thought the self-drive tour was very easy.
D.It was the first time for the writer to visit Ireland.
2. How did the writer find Kilkenny? ________
A.It was not interesting at all.B.It was also a wonderful place.
C.It needed to open up to visitors more.D.It was not worth staying at for a long time.
3. What can be inferred from the passage? ________
A.Their driver helped a lot during the journey.B.The Titanic was filmed in Cobh.
C.The writer knew nothing about Brave Heart.D.The writer visited the Trim Castle alone.
4. What does the underlined word “indebted” most probably mean in Paragraph 5? ________
A.Angry.B.Amazed.C.Stressed.D.Thankful.

9 . The hike to the lost Incan city of Choquequirao is one of the most difficult in Peru. From the town of Cachora, which is 161km west of Cusco, it's an 18km walk to Capuliyoc Mountain, then down to Playa Rosalina, where travellers camp for the night. Waking early, travelers then have to cross the Apurímac River and walk uphill to camp close to the ruins. Then, the next morning, it's another 2km walk up to the ruins, 3, 100m above sea level. To get back? Well, it's the same way you came.

“I've had people in their 60s and 70s do it,” said Juan Barrios, a guide from the Adventure Life company. “But some people come out thinking that because it's only 28km from the drop off they can do it in a day. Six or seven days for the hike is best.”

It makes sense, then, that Choquequirao draws only about 30 people a day during the high season (June through August). Compare that to the 2, 500 people who arrive each day at the famous Incan city of Machu Picchu.

But for those who make the journey, the rewards (回报) are great: beautiful mountain views at every turn, and the chance to explore the wonderful ruins nearly alone.

Believed to be created around the same time as Machu Picchu, in 1445, Choquequirao is actually larger than better-known Machu Picchu. But very little has been written about Peru's other lost city and researchers are still uncovering new parts of the ruins, leaving life on the mountain relatively untouched.

But officials say that the building of the first cable car (缆车) to Choquequirao will shorten the several-day walk to a 15-minute cable car ride. As a result, the number of travellers that now make the journey each week could turn into 3,000 visitors per day.

Choquequirao is beautiful now because of how untouched it is. Even though the lost city was discovered by Spanish explorer Juan Arias Díaz in 1710, the ruins still make you feel as though you're the first to find them. Will it be the same when more travellers flood in (大量涌入)?

1. What does the first paragraph centre on?
A.How tall Choquequirao is.B.How to get to Choquequirao easily.
C.What great views Choquequirao has.D.How hard the trip to Choquequirao is.
2. In what way is Choquequirao different from Machu Picchu?
A.Choquequirao is older.B.Choquequirao is quieter.
C.Choquequirao is smaller.D.Choquequirao is better known.
3. How are the ruins of Choquequirao?
A.They're still being dug out.B.They're in a generally poor condition.
C.They're being renewed at the moment.D.They've been researched internationally.
4. What does the author think of Choquequirao in the future?
A.It will be more attractive.
B.It will develop at a slow speed.
C.It won't necessarily take a turn for the better.
D.It won't be more popular than Machu Picchu.
