1 . The past ages of man have all been carefully labeled by anthropologists(人类学家). Descriptions like “Paleolithic(旧石器时代) Man”, “Neolithic(新石器时代) Man”, etc., neatly sum up whole periods. When the time comes for anthropologists to turn their attention to the twenty-first century, they will surely choose the label “Legless Man”. Histories of the time will go something like this: “In the twenty-first century, people forgot how to use their legs. Men and women moved about in cars, buses and trains from a very early age. There were lifts in all large buildings to prevent people from walking. And the surprising thing is that they didn’t use their legs even when they went on holiday. They built cable railways, ski-lifts and roads to the top of every huge mountain. All the beauty spots on earth were ruined by the presence of large car parks.”

The future history books might also record that we lost the right of using our eyes. In our hurry to get from one place to another, we failed to see anything on the way. Air travel gives you a bird’s-eye view of the world or even less if the wing of the aircraft happens to get in your way. When you travel by car or train, the unclear picture of the countryside constantly slides over the window. When you mention the most impressive place-names in the world, the typical 21st century traveler always says “I’ve been there.”—meaning “I drove through it at 100 miles an hour on the way to somewhere else.”

When you travel at high speeds, the present means nothing: you live mainly in the future because you spend most of your time looking forward to arriving at some other place. But actual arrival, when it is achieved, is meaningless. You want to move on again. By traveling like this, you skip all experience. The traveler on foot, on the other hand, lives in the present. For him traveling and arriving are one and the same thing: he arrives somewhere with every step he makes. He experiences the present moment with his eyes, his ears and the whole of his body. At the end of his journey he feels a delicious physical tiredness. Satisfying sleep will be his: the just reward of all true travelers.

1. Anthropologists name man nowadays “Legless Man” because _________.
A.people prefer cars, buses and trains
B.people travel without using legs
C.lifts prevent people from walking
D.people use their legs less and less
2. According to the passage, what might make people lose the right of using their eyes?
A.The modern means of transportation.B.A bird’s-eye view of the world.
C.The unclear sight from the vehicles.D.The fast-paced life style.
3. From the passage, we know traveling at high speeds means _________.
A.appreciating beautiful sceneryB.experiencing life skills
C.focusing on the next destinationD.feeling physical tiredness
4. What does the author intend to tell us?
A.Modern transportation devices have replaced legs.
B.Traveling makes the world a small place.
C.Human’s history develops very fast.
D.The best way to travel is on foot.

2 . Future history books might record that we were robbed of the use of our eyes. In our hurry to get from one place to another, we fail to see anything on the way, Air travel gives you a bird’s eye view of the world ---or even less if the wing of the aircraft happens to get in your way. When you travel by car or train, you are moving so quickly that you do not see the countryside clearly. Car drivers are forever thinking about going on and on. They never want to stop. Is it the great motorways that attract them, or what? And as for sea travel, it hardly deserves mentioning. It is perfectly summed up in the words of the old song: “I joined the navy to see the world, and what did I see? I saw the sea.” You mention the place names in the world like EI Dorado, Kabul and someone is sure to say, “I have been there”, meaning I drove through it at 100 miles an hour on the way to somewhere else.

When you travel at high speeds, the present means nothing: you live mainly in the future because you spend most of your time looking forward to arriving at some other place. But actual arrival, when it is achieved, is meaningless. You want to move on again. By traveling like this, you suspend (中止) all experience; the present stops being a reality: you might just as well be dead.

The traveler on foot, on the other hand, lives constantly in the present. For him traveling and arriving are one and the same thing: he arrives somewhere with every step he makes. H e experiences, the present moment with his eyes, his ears and the whole of his body. At the end of his journey he feels a delicious physical tiredness. Satisfying sleep will be his: the just reward of all true travelers.

4 . Liverpool, my hometown, is a special city. It is so unique that in 2004 it became a World Heritage(遗产)Site.

I recently returned to my home city and my first stop was at a museum on the River Mersey. Blanketed in mist(薄雾),Victorian architecture rose from the banks of the river, responded to the sounds of sea-birds, and appeared unbelievably charming. When I headed toward the centre, I found myself surrounded by buildings that mirror the best palaces of Europe. It is not hard to imagine why, on first seeing the city, most visitors would be overpowered by the beauty of the noble buildings, which are solid signs of Liverpool’s history.

As if to stress its cultural role, Liverpool has more museums and galleries than most cities in Britain. At Walker Art Gallery, I was told that it has the best collections of Victorian paintings in the world, and is the home of modern art in the north of England. However, culture is more than galleries. Liverpool offers many music events. As Britain’s No. 1 music city, it has the biggest city music festival in Europe, and its musicians are famous all over the world. Liverpool is also well-known for its football and other sports events. Every year, the Mersey River Festival attracts thousands of visitors, making the city a place of wonder.

As you would expect from such a city, there are restaurants serving food from around the world. When my trip was about to complete, I chose to rest my legs in Liverpool’s famous Philharmonic pub(酒馆). It is a monument to perfection, and a heritage attraction itself.

Being a World Heritage Site, my home city is certainly a place of “outstanding universal value”. It is a treasure house with plenty of secrets for the world to explore.

1. Visitors who see the city for the first time would be deeply impressed by__________.
A.its charming banksB.its famous museums
C.its wonderful palacesD.its attractive buildings
2. Liverpool has important cultural role because __________.
A.it has the best collections of Victorian paintings
B.it has museums, galleries, music festival and sports events
C.the Mersey River Festival attracts thousands of visitors
D.the best palaces of Europe are in Liverpool
3. The author uses the Philharmonic pub to prove that__________.
A.Liverpool is a well-known city for its restaurants
B.Liverpool is an impressive place full of attraction
C.a pub is a wonderful place for visitors to relax themselves
D.a pub is a perfect choice for visitors to complete their journey

5 . Booking a trip on an online travel site is convenient, but comes with its own set of problems.

◆They know who’s gone to spend more.

Last year, U. S travel research company Orbitz tracked people’s online activities to test out whether Mac users spend more on travel than PC users. Turns out that on average, Mac users lay out US $ 20~30 more per night on hotels. As a result, online travel sites show these users more expensive travel options first. To avoid paying more, sort results by price.

◆Their software doesn’t always link to the hotel’s system.

A guaranteed reservation is almost impossible to come by anywhere — but the risk of your flight or hotel being overbooked increases with third-party providers. The middleman’s software isn’t immune(防护作用的) to system errors, so always call the hotel or airline to make sure your booking was processed.

◆You could miss out on loyalty (积分) points.

Third party providers can get between you and frequent flyer miles or points. Many hotel loyalty programs don’t recognize external sites, others award only minimum points without special offers, like double points on hotel stays.

◆Don’t be fooled by packages: Often, they’re low-end items grouped together.

Ever notice how travel sites recommend a hotel, a rental car, and tour package all in one click. These deals usually feature travel that no one wants, like flights with multiple layovers(中途停留). Check the fine print.

◆Once your trip is purchased, you’re on your own.

An online travel agency can’t provide assistance the same way an agent can if a flight is cancelled or a room is substandard. Basically, when you arrive at the airport or hotel, you’re just another customer who booked at the lowest rate.

1. What does the writer mainly intend to tell readers?
A.Tips of how to reserve flights on line.
B.Problems of reserving a hotel on line.
C.Notices about reserving a trip on line.
D.Traps in reserving hotels and flights on line.
2. Why do people probably spend more on their online reservation for trips?
A.They book at prices offered first by travel sites.
B.They are shown less expensive travel options first.
C.Some of the travel expenses are earned by Mac users.
D.Their flights or hotels are overbooked by tourist agencies.
3. Which of the following can replace the underlined “fine print”?
A.Detailed items.B.Discounted prices.
C.Good deals.D.Special services.
4. What can we learn from the passage?
A.The third parties will provide good travel services on line.
B.Few people book trips on line because of possible troubles.
C.Travelers’ interests may not be guaranteed with booking on line.
D.Those booking trips on line will benefit much from loyalty points

6 . Flight cancellations(取消) and loss of luggage can ruin even the best-planned holiday. The key to a stress-free trip is having a backup plan.
Fly non-stop. The worst problems involve connections, so it is important to take non-stop flights whenever possible. If you do have to make a connection, try to route through a southern city, where snowstorms and de-icing delays will be less likely. Always allow at least two to three hours for flight connections.
Check the weather. Check the weather in your connecting city, not just the arrival and departure city. If your departure flight is cancelled because of weather, you can go home or back to your hotel. Airlines promise to get you on the next available flight, not the next flight. That could be several days later on a sold-out holiday weekend.
Go early. The earlier in the day you fly, the better your chance of getting rebooked the same day after a missed connection. It will also put you ahead of stranded(滞留的) passengers who arrive later.
Rebook immediately. As soon as your flight is delayed or cancelled, get on the phone and rebook your flight instead of waiting at the ticket counter. If your rebooking is delayed, call or ask your travel agent to find a seat on another carrier, and then ask your original carrier to endorse your ticket to the new airline. Airlines are not required to do this but often do. Learn more at www. dot. gov/ airconsumer/ fly-rights.
Ship bags. A few days before your flight, ship suitcases or holiday gifts to your destination by a documented express service. It’s preferable to losing bags because of re-routed flights and sometimes cheaper than paying airline overweight bag fees.
Know your rights. Airlines are not required to compensate passengers for delayed or cancelled flights, but it never hurts to ask for goodwill vouchers(折扣) for meals, taxis or a room.
1. When making a flight connection, it’s common that you’ll___________.
A.stop in the southB.choose a good city without snowstorm
C.be trapped in the stormD.wait for two or three hours
2. The suggested way for you to rebook your flight is___________.
A.through the phoneB.by waiting at the ticket counter
C.by changing another airlineD.by surfing the Internet
3. The underlined word “compensate” in the last paragraph can be replaced by “___________”.
A.payB.askC.hostD.treat
4. What’s the best title of the passage?
A.The Worst Problem in the Trip.
B.The Preparation Before the Flight Trip.
C.How to Book the Plane Ticket.
D.How to Plan the Holiday.

9 . Have you ever been to the beautiful country of Holland and its capital Amsterdam? Anyone who has traveled to Amsterdam would probably agree on one thing: Amsterdam’s story is a tale of two cities -- one during the day and a completely different one at night.
During the day, the largest city in the Netherlands sits quietly on the Amstel River. You can rent a bicycle, visit the Van Gogh or Anne Frank museum, or take a water taxi. But when the sun goes down, the partying begins. In the big clubs and in coffee shops, tourists gather to hang out, talk politics and smoke.

The city has a historic past. One impressive place to visit is the Anne Frank House on Nine Streets. It was there that the young Jewish girl wrote her famous diary during World War II.Visitors can view Anne’s original diary and climb behind the bookcase to the room where she and her family hid from the Nazis for two years.

10 . One might expect that the evergrowing demands of the tourist trade would bring nothing but good for the countries that receive the holidaymakers. Indeed, a rosy picture is painted for the longterm future of the holiday industry. Every month sees the building of a new hotel somewhere. And every month another rockbound Pacific island is advertised as the ‘last paradise(天堂) on earth’.
However, the scale and speed of this growth seem set to destroy the very things tourists want to enjoy. In those countries where there was a rush to make quick money out of seaside holidays, overcrowded beaches and the concrete jungles of endless hotels have begun to lose their appeal.
Those countries with little experience of tourism can suffer most. In recent years, Nepal set out to attract foreign visitors to fund developments in health and education. Its forests, full of wildlife and rare flowers, were offered to tourists as one more untouched paradise. In fact, the nature all too soon felt the effects of thousands of holidaymakers traveling through the forest land. Ancient tracks became major routes for the walkers, with the consequent exploitation of precious trees and plants.
Not only can the environment of a country suffer from the sudden growth of tourism. The people as well rapidly feel its effects. Farmland makes way for hotels, roads and airports; the old way of life goes. The onetime farmer is now the servant of some multinational organization; he is no longer his own master. Once it was his back that bore the pain; now it is his smile that is exploited. No doubt he wonders whether he wasn't happier in his village working his own land.
Thankfully, the tourist industry is waking up to the responsibilities it has towards those countries that receive its customers. The protection of wildlife and the creation of national parks go hand in hand with tourist development and in fact obtain financial support from tourist companies. At the same time, tourists are being encouraged to respect not only the countryside they visit but also its people.
The way tourism is handled in the next ten years will decide its fate and that of the countries we all want to visit. Their needs and problems are more important than those of the tourist companies. Increased understanding in planning worldwide tourism can preserve the market for these companies. If not, in a few years' time the very things that attract tourists now may well have been destroyed.
1. What does the author indicate in the last sentence of Paragraph 1?
A.The Pacific island is a paradise.
B.The Pacific island is worth visiting.
C.The advertisement is not convincing.
D.The advertisement is not impressive.
2. The example of Nepal is used to suggest ________.
A.its natural resources are untouched
B.its forests are exploited for farmland
C.it develops well in health and education
D.it suffers from the heavy flow of tourists
3. What can we learn about the farmers from Paragraph 4?
A.They are happy to work their own lands.
B.They have to please the tourists for a living.
C.They have to struggle for their independence.
D.They are proud of working in multinational organizations.
4. Which of the following determines the future of tourism?
A.The number of tourists.
B.The improvement of services.
C.The promotion of new products.
D.The management of tourism.
5. The author's attitude towards the development of the tourist industry is ________.
A.optimisticB.doubtful
C.objectiveD.negative
