2 . I’ve come back to check on a baby. Just after dusk I’m in a car down a muddy road in the rain, past rows of shackled (戴镣的) elephants, their trunks swinging. I was here five hours before, when the sun was high and hot and tourists were on elephants’ backs.

Walking now, I can hardly see the path with my phone’s flashlight. When the wooden fence post stops me short, I point my light down and follow a current of rainwater across the floor until it washes up against three large, gray feet. A fourth foot twisted above the surface, tied tightly by a short chain and choked by ring of metal spikes (尖刺). When the elephant gets tired and puts her foot down, the spikes press deeper into her ankle.

Meena is four years and two months old, still a child as elephants go. Khammon Kongkhaw, her caretaker, told me earlier that Meena wears the spiked chain because she tends to kick. Kongkhaw has been responsible for Meena here at Maetaman Elephant Adventure, near Chiang Mai, in northern Thailand, since she was 11 months old. He said he keeps her on the spiked chain only during the day and takes it off at night. But it’ s night now.

I ask Jin Laoshen, the Maetaman worker, why her chain is still on. He says he doesn’t know.

Maetaman is one of many animal attractions in and around tourist-crowded Chiang Mai. Meena’s life is set to follow the same track as many of the roughly 3,800 captive (被捕获的) elephants in Thailand. When Meena is too old or sick to give rides—maybe at 55, maybe at 75, she’ll die. If she's lucky, she’ll get a few years of retirement. She'll spend most of her life on a chain.

1. Why does the author decide to come back?
A.To check the baby elephant Meena.
B.To feed those shackled elephants.
C.To release those shackled elephants.
D.To help an injured worker in Maetaman.
2. What can we conclude from the second paragraph?
A.The author is scared walking in the path.
B.Meena is treated badly and very painful
C.Meena only has three healthy legs.
D.One of Meena’s leg is badly broken.
3. What’s the author’s attitude towards those elephants?
A.Indifferent.
B.Critical.
C.Sympathetic.
D.Negative.
4. We can infer that the purpose of the author’s writing is______________.
A.to describe those elephants to attract tourists around the world
B.to draw people’s attention to caring about the fate of those elephants
C.to tell readers the story of a baby elephant in Chiang Mai, Thailand
D.to tell the reason why the number of elephants is decreasing

3 . Tourism is a leisure activity, whose prework means just the opposite. Acting as a tourist is one of the clear characteristics of being "modern" and the popular concept of tourism is that, it is organized within particular place and occurs for a period of time, which is arranged beforehand. Tourist relationships arise from a movement of people to, and their stay in, various destinations. This necessarily involves some movement, that is the journey, and a period of stay in a new place or places. The journey and the stay are by definition outside the normal places, of residence and work, and are of a short-term and temporary nature, and there is a clear intention to return home within a relatively short period of time.

Modern societies engage in such tourist practices. New socialized forms of transportation and hotel facilities have developed in order to cope with the mass character of the gazes of tourists, as opposed to the individual character of travel. Places are chosen to be visited and be gazed upon because there is an anticipation (期望) especially through daydreaming and fantasy of intense pleasures, either on a different scale or involving different senses from those who have been there. Such anticipation is also constructed and stays through a variety of non-tourist practices, such as films, TV, literature, magazines, records and videos which construct and reinforce this daydreaming.

Tourists tend to visit features of landscape and townscape which separate them off from everyday experience. Such aspects are viewed because they are thought to be in some sense out of the ordinary. The viewing of these tourist sights often involves different forms of social patterning with a much greater sensitivity to visual elements of landscape or townscape than is normally found in everyday life. People hang around these sights in a way that they would not normally do in their home environment and the vision is objectified or captured through photographs, postcards films and so on which enable the memory to be endlessly reproduced and recaptured.

One of the earliest research paper on the subject of tourism is Boorstin's analysis of the "pseudo-event" (1964) where he argues that contemporary Americans cannot experience "reality" directly but are happy with "pseudo-events". Isolated from the host environment and the local people, the mass tourist travels in guided groups and finds pleasure in fake or man-made attractions, and is cheated into enjoying the pseudo-events and disregarding the real world outside. Over time the images generated of different tourist sights lead to a closed self- perpetuating(自我延续的)system of a false belief that provides the tourist with the basis for selecting or deciding potential places to visit. Such visits are made, says Boorstin, within the "environmental bubble" of the familiar American style hotel which keeps the tourist from the strangeness of the host environment.

D.travelling is to see landmarks and discover unknown ways of life and values

A.when travelling, many tourists will miss their homes and friends
B.visiting popular tourist attractions is only a waste of time
C.the virtue of travel is to interact with a culture different from your own
D.American tourists like to visit familiar places when they travel outside
4. Which of the following can serve as the best title of the passage?
A.Tourism, an Outlook on Different Life

5 . Flying down a 488-meter-long slide provides plenty of excitement for most people. But for those who like more extreme adventures, Nicaragua offers an even more exciting slide experience. The thought of racing down an active volcano with only a board is enough to get most people hot under the collar. But for thrill-seeking sports fanatics, boarding down a 2,380-foot-high volcano at the speed of 80 km/h is the coolest sport around.

Thousands of travelers are heading to the foothills of Nicaragua’s Cerro Negro to take part in the new sporting craze (狂热). Surfers, dressed in protective jump suits, knee-pads and helmets, receive brief instructions and then try sliding down a short slope(斜坡). After that, it’s time for the real thing. Sitting on their specially-constructed boards, surfers push off and fly straight down a 488-meter-long slope. The black volcanic ash provides a dusty, dirty ride. But boarders usually arrive at the bottom with smiles on their faces.

Phillip Southan, owner and manager of Bigfoot Hostel and Green Pathways Tours, said, "We started offering this trip in 2005 and it has become so popular. This is a unique tour as nowhere else in the world can you board down an active volcano."

"What we offer is a tour for everyone with absolutely no experience. One of the greatest attractions of the tour is that you get a bit of everything. Since 2005, more than 10,000 people have traveled to Cerro Negro to give it a try."

"When you are on the top you will have the opportunity to stand near the crater(火山口) and see a smoking volcano. But the biggest risk is that you will take the chance of getting some scratches if you fall over."

"Many years of experience has taken this tour to a level where it is safe but still fun and for some people a little frightening. We are always working on ways to continue improving it for the future."

1. Which words can best describe the slide in Cerro Negro?
A.Secure but tiring.B.Enjoyable but risky.
C.Popular but demanding.D.Worthwhile but painful.
2. What does the underlined words "the real thing" in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Sliding down the volcanic slope.
B.Escaping the black volcanic ash.
C.Heading to the mountaintop alone.
D.Receiving professional slide instructions
3. In what way is the slide in Cerro Negro special?
A.It is available to everyone.
B.It has the longest slope worldwide.
C.It is based on an active volcano.
D.It offers specially-constructed boards.
4. What makes the slide in Cerro Negro relatively safe according to Phillip Southan?
A.High-tech safety facilities.
B.Knowledge and skills from practice.
C.Advanced training guidance on the slide.
D.Staff’s familiarity with the surroundings.

6 . 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项, 选项中有两项为多余选项。

Since the 1980s eco-tourism has grown and grown. It is the fastest growing type of tourism.

If done well, eco-tourism has several advantages. It is kinder to the environment.     1    This means that more natural habitat is protected and that the resources for building come from sustainable (可持续的) sources.Another advantage is that people in the developed world through eco-tourism get to experience places of great natural importance as well as communicating with local people.     2

However, there are some disadvantages of eco-tourism. It is felt by some environmentalists that any human activity will cause disorder in the routine of animals.     3

Another problem for local people is that they are expected to pose for cameras and dance etc. for money.     4    The tourists are destroying the culture that they are paying to protect.

Eco-tourism tries to go to the places far away from other communities.     5    There is nothing stopping people taking money from tourists as well as doing environmentally unfriendly activities.

It seems that the disadvantages often outweigh the advantages of eco-tourism. It might be better to take pictures of animals rather than kill animals, but given the choice the animals would sooner not have people around. It seems whether eco-tourism should be allowed should be judged case-by-case, and that the local people must be considered.

A.These places are often not well policed.
B.People walking through the forest may do much harm.
C.And these activities will also damage the eco-system.
D.It seldom ends people to untouched parts of the world.
E.This is good for both parties: they both can better understand each other.
F.And it encourages developers to consider the natural environment more.
G.It discourages the local people from pursuing their traditional life styles.

7 . There is a tread in travelling that is sweeping the nation— it’s being called voluntourism. Foreign destinations are attracting American citizens who want to sightsee, while at the same time engage in community service.

Photos on a wall are of recent visits to an orphanage(孤儿院) in India. It’s a trip Jim Inners first made after looking a more meaningful way to see the world. Through the Austin-based Miracle Foundation, Inners has traveled to India three times as part of a growing trend called voluntourism, which combines foreign travel with charity work.

“You’re living. You’re not just sending a check to help somebody but you have a little girl, a little boy. You’re their life line to a new life.” said Inners

Silicon Labs co-founder Nav Sooch recently raised money to build a village for orphans in India and has traveled there several times. He says it’s possible to sightsee and serve the needy.

“I think it would be a shame to go to India and not see the Taj Mahal. It’s a wonderful place and I think you can have that as well as the real interaction with real people.” said Sooch.

“We’ve had all ages. We’ve had from 21/2 with a family all the way up to an 82-year-old and that’s the beauty of these trips.” says Barbara Joubert. She plans the 9-day journeys on behalf of the Miracle Foundation. She says it appeals to those who want to give back. “So the most basic work or what you’re doing there is loving the kids and it’s not hard.” said Joubert.

“Spending time with all these kids has been wonderful.” says Inners. Voluntourism will take Jim Inners back to “Pinky”, the girl who calls him Papa Jim.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文,本文针对如何去迪斯尼乐园玩得开心,而且省钱这一问题给出了一些建议。

8 . Disney World is a very popular attraction. But going there can be costly. Here are some suggestions that can help you save money.

Instead of eating at the park, get premade food from a nearby grocery store or even make your own lunch. Also, make sure to take your own water with you because spending $3 on water will make your stomach hurt. Another idea is to pack snacks or quick and cheap pick-me-ups as you make your way around the park.

Of course you’re going to want to take some Disney souvenirs home with you, but you’ll quickly realize that it comes with a price. Before buying anything, make sure you have a plan. Some suggestions for keeping costs down include picking your own pearl at the Japan store at Epcot, which is all about the experience and only $15.95 plus tax, or even getting special tradable collection pin that you can trade with Disney cast members or other guests.

When you go to Disney World on rainy days, you may catch a lot of showers. But you don’t have to. Go to a local Dollar Tree and buy disposable ponchos (一次性雨披) for $1. The ponchos at Disney are probably more durable (耐用的), but they cost $9. For a family of five, the Disney ponchos would cost $45 versus spending $5 at the dollar store.

It costs $17 to park in Disney for a day. Luckily, most non-Disney resorts offer free shuttles (来往的班车) to and from the park and all Disney resorts offer free transportation for guests as well. If you like to be on your own schedule without worrying about when the shuttle comes, then parking is your only choice. But waiting for the shuttle and going by a schedule isn’t really difficult, either.

1. According to the author, if you want to eat at Disney World, you can ________.
A.just take pick-me-ups to save money
B.get premade food at Disney World
C.avoid food that stimulates your appetite
D.prepare food before entering the park
2. What does the author think of buying pearl at the Japan store at Epcot?
A.It can be a terrible experience.
B.It enables one to get pearl at a reasonable price.
C.It’s a good way to find a tradable collection.
D.It’s the best way to get Disney souvenirs.
3. If you buy four ponchos at a local Dollar tree instead of at Disney, you can save ________.
A.$32B.$36
C.$40D.$45
4. The author thinks it is advisable to ________.
A.park in Disney World for a day
B.avoid going to Disney World on rainy days
C.use more durable ponchos at Disney World
D.use transportation offered by the resorts
