5 . Travelling Abroad
Many tourists go and see parks, museums and castle when they visit a new place. There are many things I like about travelling, but waiting in line to buy museum tickets and then having your visit ruined by noisy tour groups is not one of them. The things that make places special are all around the famous buildings, not inside them.
My recent trip to India is a good example of this. By far the most interesting part of it was getting to know people-bicycle-taxi drivers, policemen riding elephants and children trying to earn some money by cleaning shoes. Meeting various people was all so amazing that I didn't need to do any "proper" sightseeing.
I also have fantastic memories of Florence. It was a boiling hot day and people lined up for at least a kilometer long outside the museum. Instead of joining it, I sat in a shady square, ate a delicious pizza and listened to a man singing opera songs to only a few listeners. If I had waited in line, I would have missed this experience.
One of the best things about travelling is creating memories to bring back. When I got back home from a holiday in Malaysia,I made some of the dishes I'd tasted in the food market. Maybe my results weren't as good as the real thing, but they reminded me of the places and the people I'd met-far better than anything from a gift shop.

6 . These years traveling abroad is becoming more and more popular with ordinary Chinese people. If you want to enjoy such a wonderful travel, your travelling abroad truly requires the most careful of preparations.
Passport. First, be sure to bring your passport along with several copies of it. Accidentally losing your passport can be a difficult experience you should always try to avoid. You may keep digital copies of this important document for backup purposes, too.
Guidebook. Staying in an unfamiliar place doesn’t have to be a headache with the help of a nice guidebook. This one provides you with maps and information you can use as you move from one place to another.
Extra clothes. While travelling, “lightly” is always highly recommended; never make the mistake of bringing lesser than what you actually need.
Medicines. Make it a point to take good care of your health while you are away. Bring enough medicines because some of them may not be available outside your country.

7 . Measuring about 13,170 miles long, the Great Wall of China is no doubt the longest man-made project on earth. It was once widely believed that it could be seen from space. Some media even reported with affected seriousness, “The biggest building the astronauts could see from space is the wall, which looks very much like a black worm.” Consequently, this statement has gone deep into people's minds and become an honor that Chinese people have enjoyed for years.
Is the Great Wall truly visible from space? Yang Liwei, China's first astronaut who was lifted into outer space by the spacecraft Shenzhou V, gave a definite answer “No.” Yang's negative response may probably put out a fair number of people's passion. But it powerfully corrected the misconception. The wall is indeed majestic, but you won't see it from space!
In fact, Neil Alden Armstrong, the American astronaut who first set foot on the moon in 1969, was asked many times whether or not he had seen the Great Wall from the moon. Recently from a sound recording announced by NASA Johnson Space Center, Armstrong said that he had seen the continents, lakes and blue spots touched with red. But he could not make out any man-made objects on earth from the moon.
The Great Wall is narrow and irregular. In space, something irregular is hard to observe. Measuring about 10 metres wide on average, it easily merges(融入) into the surrounding environment. With solely the naked eye, it is totally invisible at a height of 196,850 feet. To watch the wall on the moon is like seeking for a single hair from about 2,688 metres away. To say an astronaut can see it from space is obviously not true.
However, some people introduced an idea to make the Great Wall visible from space. If we install bright spotlights on the wall, astronauts will see the lights at night. But this suggestion has not been carried out by scientific experiments.
1. Which is right about the saying “the Great Wall can be seen from space”?A.News media cast doubt on the saying. | B.There was much evidence for the saying. |
C.Astronauts played a trick on Chinese people. | D.The Chinese had belief in the saying for long. |
A.Second to none. | B.Far-reaching. | C.Grand. | D.Visible. |
A.The Great Wall. | B.Bright spotlights. | C.Places painted blue. | D.Large area of land. |
A.By listing figures. | B.By giving examples. | C.By classifying facts. | D.By drawing conclusions. |

10 . Manchester is the “capital” of the northwest of England. Situated on the east bank of the River Irwell, it is a lively busy city with a large student population. Although it was once seen as only a dull industrial place, in recent years Manchester has become the “in” place. It is well-known for its clubs, its fashion and its music, not to mention its world-famous football team, Manchester United.
There is plenty to see in Manchester and something to suit all taste. For example, you have a taste for the Orient in Chinatown, home to Manchester’s large Chinese population. Another place to visit is the historical Castlefield area, which contains the first urban heritage park in Britain. Here you can walk around the museums and experience the atmosphere of the 19th century’s Manchester.
Football fans need not feel left out; they can always make a trip to the Old Trafford Manchester United Museum which also contains a coffee shop and a souvenir shop.
It’s easy to find your way around the city center and you’re never too far away from a bus, which will take you wherever you want to go. However, many people prefer walking in the city where there’s so much to see, and much of it is off the main travel lines.
If you get tired of all that walking, you can refresh yourself at one of the many cafe bars in the city. There’s a wide variety of homely and old-fashioned ones.
Whatever you do, you won’t have a dull moment in the place which was awarded the title of “the most interesting city in Europe”. Despite its unpopular industrial image in the past, Manchester is becoming more and more popular as a tourist destination nowadays.
