文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章讲述了,随着城市出现的问题,人们正在重新思考城市公园的作用,让公园成为人们锻炼和玩耍、为社区降温和吸收洪水的地方。

4 . City parks have long been a place for urban residents to get a small amount of green. As cities increasingly feel the impacts of rising seas and temperatures, people are rethinking the roles of urban parks.

All of the dark-gray asphalt (沥青) in cities collect heat. Dallas is one of the country’s fastest-warming cities thanks in part to its extensive impervious (不透水的) surfaces, but with a new $312 million bond package, the city is hoping to change that. Using satellite data, the city is able to see what neighborhoods most need the cooling effect of green spaces.

Cities are increasingly flooding and city planners think parks can help with this issue too. A report published in February by The Nature Conservancy looked at the best ways to deal with flooding in Houston, a city with many neighborhoods built on floodplains and regularly flooded by rising waters. Offering affected homeowners buyouts and transforming homes into green spaces would save more money than installing infrastructure (基础设施) like pipes, they found.

Brendan Shane, a climate program director, says parks can create opportunities for people to exercise and play, in addition to cooling neighborhoods and absorbing floodwater. “The stronger the bonds are from neighbor to neighbor, the better they are able to react to a shock,” he says.

“Not a single solution by itself will avoid the climate crisis. We see parks as an important part of it, but there isn’t a silver bullet,” says Diane Regas, CEO of The Trust for Public Land. “Parks are an example of what we in the environmental community need to do to reach solutions that address climate change at the same time and make people’s lives better.”

1. What does the city Dallas want to deal with?
A.The lack of green spaces.B.The way of collecting heat.
C.The effect of rising seas.D.The bond between neighborhoods.
2. What can be inferred from the report by The Nature Conservancy?
A.Cities in the world are frequently flooded.B.City parks may help prevent city flooding.
C.Cities needn’t invest much money in infrastructure.D.City parks affect people’s choice of a neighborhood.
3. What does Brendan Shane say about parks?
A.They can enable people to get over a shock.B.They can reduce air pollution effectively.
C.They can perform positive social functions.D.They can help people to keep a cool head.
4. What does the underlined phrase “a sliver bullet” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A.A fast and effective solution.B.A successful example.
C.An immediate and clear cause.D.An impractical method.

6 . Located in the middle of the Egyptian desert is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Great Pyramid of Giza. Aside from being an incredible architecture achievement, it also serves as the final resting place for the great Pharaoh Khufu. Yet, one question which has confused archeologists and architects alike is how this amazing structure was built.

Many people don’t believe that humans were technologically advanced enough in ancient Egypt to build such a large and highly advanced structure. This brought about many crazy theories that the pyramids were constructed by a race of giants or even aliens from outer space.Another popular theory suggested that the pyramids were built by an army of poor slaves who were forced to.

Modern technology and some recent findings have helped shed some light on this ancient mystery. A major breakthrough occurred when an explorer accidentally uncovered a tomb containing some written information about the builders. The records reveal that the workers were paid and well-fed, and came from poor families in Egypt. Further analysis made it clear that people considered it an honor to work on the pyramids, and the builders were treated with great respect. In fact, anyone who died while working on the pyramids was given the honor of being buried in the tomb near where the pharaohs lay.

The myth that they purposely worked to death isn’t true, either. To avoid exhaustion, the builders worked three-month shifts and then were given a break to recover. A recent estimate from researchers is that a workforce of roughly 15,000 people could have completed the construction in about 10 years. An analysis of the bones of the builders revealed that their work was extremely tough, as most of the skeletons displayed signs of severe injuries. But thanks to their incredible effort, the human race has an astonishing monument that should stand the test of time.

7 . Dozens of sea turtles swim past as I dive. Suddenly a diver cuts me off. Then another. “Hey!” I think. “Watch where you’re going!” Then I realize: These aren’t divers. They are sea lions! The creatures blow bubbles at me and the group of 11 kids I’m on vocations with, hitting us slightly on our backs. To not bother them much, we tear ourselves away from the wonderland.

We take this trip to the Galapagos Islands, a group of tropical islands crossing the equator. Our hotel is a boat called the Eclipse that has a pool. Humans aren’t allowed to live on most of the islands. The only way people can experience the magic of this place and meet animals on all the islands is by “panga”. “Our small motorboat is more important than the Eclipse. It’s very safe,” says a local guide, Fielsch. Lack of human threat makes the animals friendly. “They don’t know enough to be scared of humans.” Our group experience that firsthand. When we return after our diving adventure, we find sea lions lying next to our backpacks! Walking along the sand, we see more wildlife: seals, red crabs, orcas.

The following morning, we reach Fernandina Island, known for its volcano. Flightless birds called cormorants build nests on the rocks. Nearby are Galapagos penguins. Averaging about 19 inches in height, they’re the second smallest species of penguin in the world. “The Galapagos are so curious,” says 12-year-old Harry. “You’ve got penguins living far from the frozen South Pole, and birds that don’t fly!”

As we ride back, six penguins stand like soldiers, seeming to say goodbye. It’s our last day; none of us wants to leave this place. We know this trip has been a milestone for us. A marked shift in our attitudes towards the natural world is underway. “The Galapagos Islands seem to break the world’s rules,” says Harry. “More than ever, I’m interested in saving the environment. These animals truly need our care,” his sister Hannah adds.

1. How does the author find the diving experience?
A.Attractive.B.Disturbing.
C.Dangerous.D.Valuable.
2. What’s the function of “panga”?
A.To protect people from danger.
B.To provide a shelter for local people.
C.To guide people in seeing the animals.
D.To transport people to each of the islands.
3. What’s special about Galapagos penguins?
A.They are not able to fly.
B.They remain hidden from view.
C.They live in a tropical climate.
D.They’re the smallest of their kind.
4. Why is the trip considered a milestone for the author’s group?
A.It expands their knowledge of the world.
B.It changes the way they think about nature.
C.It inspires them to protect the environment.
D.It enables them to interact with various wildlife.
