1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Wylie lived in Scotland, far up on the hills, and helped her master take care of his sheep.

Wylie watched over the sheep and the little lambs like a soldier, and never let anything hurt them. She drove them out to pasture when it was time, and brought them safely home when it was time for that. She loved her work, and was a wonderfully fine sheepdog.

At last her master grew too old to stay alone on the hills. Before he left, he gave Wylie to two kind young men who lived in the nearest town; he knew they would be good to her. They grew very fond of her, and so did their old grandmother and the little children; she was so gentle and handsome and well behaved.

But after a while, the family noticed something very strange indeed about their dog. Every single Tuesday night, about nine o'clock. Wylie disappeared. And she would be gone all night. But every Wednesday morning, she was at the door, waiting to be let in. Her silky coat was all sweaty and muddy and her feet heavy with weariness, but her bright eyes looked up at her masters as if she were trying to explain where she had been.

Week after week, the same thing happened. Nobody could imagine where Wylie went every Tuesday night. They tried to follow her to find out, but she always slipped away. It grew to be a real mystery. Where in the world did Wylie go?

In the city near the town where the kind young men lived was a big market. On Tuesday nights, the farmers used to come down from the hills, and drive their sheep through the city streets into the pens, ready to sell on Wednesday morning; that was the day they sold them. The sheep weren’t used to the city noises and sights, and they always grew afraid and wild, and gave the farmers and the sheepdogs a great deal of trouble. They broke away and ran about, in everybody’s way.

Once upon a time, there lived a slave called Androcles who was yearning to be set free by his master since he was treating him badly. So Androcles hatched a plan and escaped into a nearby forest. After he had traveled a while Androcles suddenly heard a roar behind him and found a lion standing close by.He was sure the lion was going to kill him.But instead the lion slowly limped towards him and held out its paw. There was a thorn stuck to its paw and there was a lot of blood oozing out.

Androcles removed the thorn and the lion walked away peacefully into the forest. After a few days Androcles was captured by his master who was so angry because he had run away. The master decided to throw Androcles to a lion. This was a common practice in ancient Greece where the slaves were often thrown into an arena to fight a starving lion.

The next day a huge crowd gathered to watch the fight. The king was also present.A lion that had been starved for a number of days was brought into the arena in a cage.As soon as Androcles was brought in,the guards let the lion out of the cage.Androcles was trembling in fear as the lion rushed at him with great rage.Much to the astonishment of the crowd, the lion suddenly stopped in its path, looked intently at Androcles and then went and lay down near his feet.Androcles was delighted as he realized that it was the same lion as he had helped in the forest. He hugged the lion as the entire arena watched in stunned silence. The king was overjoyed at seeing such a brave act and permitted Androcles to be freed. When he entered the arena,Androcles thought that he was a dead man but the turn of events ensured the opposite—his freedom.

Katie had always felt like she never connected with anyone. There was no one she considered a friend. So, when her parents decided to move, she was okay with it. She didn't feel sad because she wasn't leaving anyone behind.

She was eight when they moved to a new town. It wasn't that different from where they had lived before. There were a lot of trees and kids running around outside, riding bikes, and playing. One day her mother caught her staring out the window at some kids playing. Her mom told her to go out and play with those kids. So Katie went out. She could see that they were all having fun and she wanted to join in but she was afraid. She tried to muster up the courage to ask them if she could join them but she just couldn't do it.

She decided to go for a walk instead. She liked how peaceful the town was. The people seemed nice and polite. Her stroll finally led her to the town's lake. She felt the rush of cold air hitting her face. The beauty of the lake was something to behold. She sat there admiring it and decided that this would be her place. She would come here every day and maybe one day, she would bring her friends here.

After school, she always stopped by the lake before going home. She swore she could stay there for hours, maybe even live there. If she ever got hungry, she always had food ready in her bag.

One day when she was writing a poem about the lake, she heard her stomach growl. She put down her notebook and her pen and got her sandwich out. She was about to take a bite when she heard a noise. This alarmed her. She hadn't heard or seen anything strange before. She looked around and suddenly she noticed that there was something black moving toward the bank.

4 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

I was sitting in my office in an animal clinic when a young family rushed in. The father held a dying dog packed in a bloody towel in his arms. He was followed by a young boy carrying a big cat and crying as if his little heart was completely broken. The mother followed, comforting the boy. The cat simply looked at everyone with no interest and remained calm, lying on the boy's shoulder.

The nurse sent the father and what he held into the examining rooms. As the mother, the boy and the cat settled down on the seats in the waiting room, I couldn't help asking what this was all about. I thought that the pet in the bloody towel must have been hit by a car. In fact, it was one of the most unusual and heartwarming stories I had ever heard.

The cat lying on the boy's shoulder, named Tom, was the first pet of the family and now was an old guy of 12 years old. They had rescued him as an abandoned kitten. He was atypical cat, self-centred and quite independent, but very gentle.

Then, a year before this incident, Scotty, a puppy, came to the family as a gift from the boy's grandparents. The family was at first fearful about how Tom would accept the newcomer, but a strange thing happened. The old cat looked at the dog as if he were a long lost little brother. He absolutely liked the little guy. He allowed the puppy to chew his tail. He played for hours with him as if the dog were his own personal pet.

The family loved the two pets very much, taking videos of the pair together, and impressed by the way the old cat and the young dog were connected. The family lived near the hill. Tom and Scotty were kept indoors at night because there were wolves searching for small pets for meals at night.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。 续写词数应为80左右。

Wind whistled round the corner of the house, thunder rolled and rain beat against the windows — not a night to be outside but rather to sit by the fire. Thanks to the solid walls and roof overhead, I could imagine Dr. Frankenstein's frightening creation wandering on such a night. I was alone, my husband away and the nearest neighbor a quarter miles down the road. Alone, that is, except for Lassie, a hairy, black and white dog, who sat with her head on my lap, her intelligent, brown eyes gazing up at me as if to say, don't worry, we'll be all right.

Through the years she was with us, she proved time and time again to be a superb judge of character. We never knew if it was a result of her sense of smell or sound-but, whatever it was, she definitely possessed a talent we humans lacked. On first meeting she would either wag the tip of her tail a couple of times to indicate that the visitor was acceptable, or slightly curl her top lip, exposing her sharp teeth which told you to be alert. Always accurate, her gift was never more obvious than on this night.

The doorbell rang. I decided not to answer it. It rang again, much longer this time. Whoever was there was not going away. Still I hesitated. On the fourth ring, with Lassie by my side, I finally answered the door. My heart beat fast and my mouth went dry, for there, stood the monster himself. A twisted body under a heavy overcoat, one shoulder bumped higher than the other and his head leaned slightly forward and to one side.

“May I use your phone?” The voice came from somewhere back in his throat and, although the request was polite, his tone was rude.

Reaching in his pocket and producing a piece of paper, he handed it to me. I refused to take it. Believing he might try and force his way in, I looked at Lassie to see if she was ready to defend the home.

Surprisingly, she sat by my side, the tip of her tail wagging.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

Many years ago, I worked at a very small county animal shelter. Under the state regulations, we were only allowed to keep a dog for a certain period of time before it was claimed by its owner. Unluckily, we had limited space, and when a new dog came in, we had to make room for it somehow. It wasn't always the most pleasant task.

One day, about an hour before closing time, a small, elderly, red dog was sent here. We had no space and didn't know what we should do. My heart broke. In fact, we were supposed to let go of one of the dogs who had been there too long, but the volunteers had been putting in extra hours, bathing the dogs, and taking their pictures to try to find them homes. We were full, but the other dogs all stood a good chance of finding a home if they just had some time.

That little old dog waddled over to me and sat at my feet. She looked up with cloudy eyes, and then curled up on the floor. I bent down, lifted her to the desk, and gave her a quick exam. Her teeth were in terrible condition, but it appeared the cause was a lifetime of canned food. Someone was surely looking for this princess.

We found her a box. To our surprise, the dog whined and wagged her tail. I set her down on the floor, and she waddled over and climbed into the box! I decided to take her home for the night, and she could spend the days in the office until her owner came. Then we wouldn't have to put down another dog to open a cage.

I finished up my paperwork while the old dog slept in the box. When it was time to leave, she followed me.

In the morning, she accompanied me to work.

7 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

It was dark and gloomy as the dark night swallowed the dense forest. The clear, starry skies in the backdrop (背景) made for a fitting view as the young koala bear made his way home along the river.

It was his first day out to search for food. He remembered every word that his mom said to him as he made his way back. But the words, “be back before dark,” were haunting (萦绕) him the most.

But the little bear lost track of time as the sun started to move towards the horizons.

The darkness had changed all that. His only guiding light was the shining north star in the sky, another advice from his mother which he refused to forget.

Suddenly, the north star disappeared. It seemed it was swallowed in the same blackness which had taken over the jungle.

But there was light, a raging light which seemed different to the little koala. It couldn’t be the sun, he thought.

It seemed it was getting nearer. The little bear stopped dead in his tracks. This didn’t seem right. Suddenly, a heat wave hit him in the face as he was surrounded by flames.

Battered and bruised (遍体鳞伤), the koala ran away from the flames. He could feel the fire chasing him, as the heat got stronger. He felt it creeping up his back almost reaching his fluffy ears. He was scared to death.

He longed to be home with his mom, away from this disorder. However, he was panicking, not knowing what to do. The heat was getting unbearable. He saw a hollow tree trunk in the distance. The little bear dived into it, hoping to find some relief from the flames.

But the unforgiving flames made him realize his mistake almost immediately. The poor soul looked on as the flames started to eat away at the trunk. The dryness made it all the more delicious for this fire monster to feast on the dead tree. The heat had made the little bear exhausted. He used the last bit of energy which he had left to run from the trunk, escaping from the flames.

8 . In February 2019, my beautiful cat Xena suddenly lost the use of her back legs, and I took her straight to our vet, Chris. Xena was booked for surgery two days later. The operation was successful, and I went to see her later that day. She seemed tired, but pleased to see me and in much better shape.

A few days later, I took her home, armed with medications plus instructions for her care. I had to keep her in a large cage and teach her how to walk again. And no one could tell whether Xena could walk again or not—it was largely up to her. I wasn’t expecting much, but I carried on doing as Chris had instructed.

Just a week later, Xena amazed me. Not having managed to support herself on her back legs at all, she suddenly stood up all by herself. Soon she began to walk a little with her back supported. Encouraged, I booked her for some hydrotherapy, which was helpful for dogs in this situation. Most cats would panic if put in water, but my brave little cat astonished everyone, tolerating neck-deep water while walking on a machine.

When I took Xena to Chris, he was delighted with her progress. Over the next few weeks, Xena moved from the cage to a room of her own, with all furniture removed so that she wouldn't run into anything or get tripped. Soon, she could manage a few steps out into our garden, though she still needed some help to walk properly without dragging her legs. Despite still being in pain, she really wanted to walk again. After three months since her surgery, she was able to run, jump and climb stairs... anything she wanted.

Xena is now completely back to normal, I’d thought she might be defeated permanently by all that had happened to her. But this courageous little cat simply brushed it all off and got on with living. Many people could learn from Xena.

1. From paragraph 1, it can be learned that Xena ________.
A.was fall of energy shortly after the operation
B.was given the surgery in her owner’s absence
C.got injured owing to her owner’s carelessness
D.received an operation on reaching the hospital
2. Which word best describes the author's initial feeling about Xena’s recovery?
A.Unsure.B.Inspired.C.Satisfied.D.Hopeless.
3. Why did the author remove the furniture from Xena's room?
A.To avoid making a mess.B.To allow her to run faster.
C.To prevent her getting hurt.D.To make room for her cage.
4. In which aspect does Xena set a good example to us?
A.Socializing with others.B.Making proper choices.
C.Being considerate to partners.D.Dealing with life challenges.

9 . We had to put our Belgian sheepdog Shadow to sleep yesterday. He was hands down the worst dog I have ever had—not so much a superdog as a superbad dog. For the first two years of his life, we worked relentlessly to train him to do the basic things. He balked at all of it. When made to lie down, he would roll his back and cry out as if he were being beaten. If pushed too hard, he would bite — never to draw blood, but enough to let you know who was in charge.

Frustrated, we sent him to a professional trainer, who took him into his home to work with him one-on-one. After the agreed-upon two weeks of training, the handler called and sheepishly asked for another two weeks with Shadow, free of charge, as he had been unable to make any progress. In another two weeks, we got the same phone call. So, after six weeks, the dog trainer returned our dog with apologies, stating that this was the first dog that he’d ever deemed untrainable. Shadow appeared quite pleased with himself.

For all of his 13 years, Shadow bested us, allowing us the privilege of living in his home. On his last day, my daughter commented, “Mom, I know he doesn’t feel good because he is not growling at me when I kiss his face.” That was him. Shadow was a genius. How else could he have compelled us to love the worst dog.

1. Shadow would bite when we push him too hard ________.
A.to make us bleedB.to beat usC.to train himD.to show dissatisfaction
2. Why did the trainer ask for more time with Shadow?
A.Because he wanted to work with Shadow.
B.Because he wanted to charge more money.
C.Because he failed to train Shadow well within the agreed time.
D.Because Shadow was quite pleased with himself.
3. Which of the following is NOT true about Shadow?
A.He didn’t like being trained.
B.He spent twelve weeks altogether with the trainer.
C.He became the first dog that the trainer failed to train.
D.He would growl at our daughter when she kissed him.
4. According to the author, Shadow is ________.
A.naughty and intelligentB.friendly and trainable
C.unkind and untrainableD.superbad and disobedient

Brady was a recently retired search and rescue dog. He was not happy and missed his owner Al because Al had gone out on a rescue mission without him. Al’s nephew Steve took Brady along when he and his friend Zach went on a overnight hike. But suddenly Steve and Zach smelled something burning and they realized that lightning had set the woods on fire. Wind-blown flame had leaped from the top of one tree to another. The long dry summer had turned the forest into a tinderbox and the thunderstorm wasn’t helping much. It had more wind and lightning than rain. Zach pulled Steve’s arm.“Let’s go! We can make it back to the river we crossed today.” Steve pulled Brady’s leash and their heads down against the strong fire-wind, they hurried down the path they had followed earlier. The air was full of smoke, and pine branches broke from burning trees with a crisp sound. Steve kept his eyes on the route. All they had to do was to make it down to the river…

Brady barked a sharp warning. Ahead of them lay a dense curtain of smoke across the path. They’d never make it through that. They would have to find another escape route. The dog was pulling at his leash trying to draw them away from the smoke. This was what Brady was trained to do, and yet Steve was uneasy. It seemed to him they were moving away from the river.

Brady lifted his head and smelled the smoky wind. Suddenly, the dog ran away and disappeared. The boys yelled and shouted for him,but he didn’t come back.

They had no choice but to leave him behind. Heartsick, Steve and Zach went up a slope. He couldn’t blame Brady for panicking and escaping. He himself wanted to run even though he didn’t have a clue which way. They hadn’t gone far when there was a familiar bark, and Brady came running toward him.
