1 . One afternoon in 2022, something on the Internet caught my eye:a tiny hedgehog (刺猬) held by a big hand. The post read: “HELP! My hedgehog abandoned (抛弃) her two babies, and I cannot raise both of them because I have to go to school fulltime. Good home with experience needed as soon as possible!”
I had no experience with baby hedgehogs. I was an animal person through and through and had raised cats, dogs, birds, and guinea pigs. But this tiny animal was new to me, and it touched me that he was abandoned, that maybe I could love him and be the best mom for him.
I wrote the most heartfelt email I could. That was how I found my Louie. True to my word, he was my baby. Louie didn’t know he was a hedgehog. He never curled (蜷缩) into a ball, and he liked my two cats, no fear. The cats, however, were afraid of him, as he often moved into the room, running after the cats and blocking my way.
By the time he reached old age, Louie had only three feet. However, he still managed to climb the stairs to visit other animals. He helped me realize my dream of hedgehog photography, a hobby that began during childhood with cats and dollhouses. I love showing off his modeling.
Life has meaning because of the purpose we have. Louie needed a good home and mom, and in return, I got to be a good mother and be needed. Hedgehogs require great amounts of patience, trust, and knowledge—but the payoff (回报) is pretty great.

3 . Krabi, which is a province in southern Thailand, is the perfect holiday destination for those looking for a relaxing area. One of the main attractions of Krabi is that it still is relatively untouched. From tropical islands to natural parks, there’s a lot for you to see in Krabi.
Railay Beaches & Caves
Railay is one of Thailand’s most sought-after beach areas. Located just south of Krabi and accessible only by boat, Railay presents a timeless peaceful world. Tour highlights include four gorgeous white sand beaches, limestone cliffs, viewpoints and caves. No wonder it’s one of the most visited places in Krabi.
Phi Phi Islands
The Phi Phi islands are some of the loveliest in Thailand. Located just a 90-minute boat ride from Krabi Town, you’ll find here all that’s required to spend the tropical holiday. The main things to do go from snorkeling to rock climbing, and from diving to hiking. Phi Phi Don is also famous for its festive atmosphere, and it hosts an excellent dining scene.
Klong Thom Hot Springs
Klong Thom Hot Springs are located in the jungle. They are believed to ease a number of illness such as rheumatism (风湿) and other skin problems. They offer a pleasant time, bathing in the warm water surrounded by an original peaceful environment.

4 . What is the most shocking about the heatwave affecting the Pacific Northwest is not that it has hit a usually mild area, nor that so many long-standing temperature records are being broken. It is that those records are being broken by such large margins (幅度). In Portland, Oregon, temperature reached 46.6℃(116°F) — making it one of several cities in the region where former records have been beaten by a full 5℃(9°F). At the same time, heatwaves are also hitting central Europe and even Siberia.
Heatwaves may become headlines, but less attention is paid to them. In 2018 about 300,000 people over the age of 65 died as a result of extreme heat, mainly in India, a 54% increase since 2000, according to a report in the Lancet, a medical journal. The report also shows that, unlike storms and floods, heat does not lead to dramatic before-and-after pictures or widespread damage to belongings. It is a silent killer. As many as 70,000 people died due to a heatwave in Europe in 2003.
Heat also kills by worsening health conditions such as heart problems, so not all the deaths it causes may be directly attributed (归因) to it. Climate change will make heatwaves more common and more extreme. Even if greenhouse-gas emissions (排放) are cut to zero by the middle of this century, temperatures will go on rising for decades. So other measures are needed to protect people against extreme heat.
Governments can set up early warning systems to alarm health workers, shut down schools and stop outdoor activities. They can provide the public with forecasts of coming heatwaves, explanations of the dangers and detailed advice on what to do. Improved facilities can also help. This includes providing shaded areas, water parks and “misting stations” to help people cool down, and get to airconditioned “cooling centers” where they can find shelter and sleep if necessary.
The world is, undoubtedly, facing a big health challenge right now. There is no excuse for ignoring heatwaves and their effects.

5 . Do you chat with your dog and tell your cat secrets? Some of you doubt that it might be meaningless, while others hope that your pet understands. But what, and how much, do animals understand? For example, you know that animals are capable of experiencing pleasure, but do they experience humor? Do dogs or cats or any animal laugh in the same way that we laugh?
The reasons why human beings develop laughter are mysterious. Every human on the planet, despite the language they speak, does it. It’s something we develop before we can speak. So, while we don’t know why we do it, we do know we do it. But do animals laugh?
Monkeys vocalize enjoyment during chasing games or when they are being tickled (挠痒). Interestingly the apes that are more closely related to us, display delighted sounds most similar to human laughter. The fact suggests that laughter exists before any sort of speech. It’s reported that Koko, the famous gorilla (黑猩猩) that used sign language, once tied her keeper’s shoelaces together and then signed “chase me” showing her ability to make jokes.
But what about birds? Some clever birds have been seen to copy laughter and even make fun of other animals. It’s reported that one bird whistled and confused the family dog for joy. Crows (乌鸦) can use tools to locate food and pull the tails of predators (捕食性动物) to trick them while stealing food. But when there’s no food, it suggests the bird does it just for fun. So it’s possible that some birds have a sense of humor, and may even laugh, but we haven’t been able to identify it yet.
So how about the pets in our homes? Are they capable of laughing at us? There is evidence suggesting that dogs have developed a kind of laugh when they are enjoying themselves. Cats, on the other hand, were thought to show no emotions at all. You can be comforted that your cat isn’t laughing at you.

10 . I’ve reported about tigers on the news, however, nothing could have prepared me for what I found in India. I didn’t know what to expect, so when I saw my first tiger in the wild, I was shocked what a beautiful and powerful creature it is!
But they live with a price on their heads—a single tiger skin is worth up to £8, 000, and their bones possibly more. Another problem is that farmers need to clear a large number of areas of the forest for their cattle. This means deer are losing their living places. As a result, tigers are losing their natural prey, so they end up eating the cattle.
Tigers are not easy to live close to. I met a farmer who had been mauled by one. But despite that, he told me everything had its place in the world and he had no right to kill the tiger. He was really kind.
Those who work for the Tigers Forever Project realize that to ensure their survival, tigers don’t only need space. They need space away from people.
They are working to stop the conflict(冲突)between tigers and people by separating them. I visited a new town. People had been moved to it from a settlement in the forest. And it really has worked. It has given tigers a better life and better opportunities for the children of the resettled people.
Only 2,500 tigers are now left in the wild in India. Three out of eight tiger sub-species have already disappeared. Tigers that once lived across Asia only survive in 7% of their original living places now.
