3 . Darrell Blatchley, a marine biologist and environmentalist based in the Philippine city of Davao, received a call from the Philippines, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (渔业与水产资源局) early Friday morning reporting a death of a young whale.
When the necropsy (尸检) was performed, Blatchley told NPR, he was not prepared for the amount of plastic they found in the whale’s stomach. “It was full of plastic nothing but nonstop plastic.” he said “It was filled to the point that its stomach was as hard as a baseball.” That means that this animal has been suffering not for days or weeks but for months or even a year or more,” Blatchley added.
Blatchley is the founder and owner of the D’Bone Collector Museum, a natural history museum in Davao. In the coming days, the museum will display all the items found in the whale’s system. Blatchley and his team work with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources and other organizations to assist in rescue and recovery of marine animals.
“Within the last 10 years, we have recovered 61 whales and dolphins just within the Davao Gulf,” he said. “Of them, 57 have died due to man whether they took plastic or fishing nets or other waste, or gotten caught in pollution — and four were pregnant.”
Blatchley said he hoped that the latest incident would launch the issue of plastic pollution in the Philippines and across the globe. “If we keep going this way, it will be more uncommon to see an animal die of natural causes than it is to see an animal die of plastic,” he said.

4 . Here’s our pick of the most beautiful European cities with hardly any tourists:
Orange, France
While Avignon draws in thousands of tourists thanks to its summer festival and amazing Popes’ Palace, nearby Orange is usually unnoticed. Easier to travel around, with far fewer visitors, the city’s key attraction is the Roman Theater, which was built in the first century AD.
Norwich, England
The saying goes that Norwich has a pub for every day of the year and a church for every Sunday. While that’s perhaps far from the truth, this most typical of English cities is certainly home to some of the most attractive medieval architecture in England.
Norwich Cathedral dates back to 1096 and the streets of Colegate and Elm Hill are home to picturesque, centuries-old homes.
Aarhus, Denmark
Denmark’s second largest city is considered to be less attractive than its capital Copenhagen. But Aarhus makes a perfect choice for a Danish long weekend thanks to its pretty beaches, towering Domkirke and the great ARoS Aarhus Art Museum.
ARoS’s Wine and Food Hall is one of the best places in the city to try delicious Nordic food.
Antwerp, Belgium
The UNESCO-protected Cathedral of Our Lady occupies the Antwerp skyline, but there’s so much more to this Belgian city than its most famous building.
There’s also the Red Star Line Museum, located on Antwerp’ old docks, which shows the city’s past as a center for migration (移民) to the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

5 . How to stay safe when an earthquake happens
What should you do when an earthquake comes about unexpectedly? Here are some tips for you.
●When walking outside
●When driving a car
Firmly hold the steering wheel(方向盘), gradually reduce speed, park your car on the side of the road, and stop the engine.
●When underground or in a subway
The shaking you feel when you are underground is about half of what you would experience over ground.
●When in a high-rise building
●When near the ocean
Head for higher ground and carefully listen to tsunami(海啸) information. Do not go near the ocean until tsunami warnings have been cleared.

C.Don't even think about going to watch tsunamis! |

G.Elevators with earthquake sensors will stop at the nearest floor. |
6 . The Smilodon and the Tiger
The smilodon (剑齿虎) died out probably about ten thousand years ago.
Tigers are not
Another main difference between today’s tiger and the smilodon is the size of the smilodon’s
The smilodon lived in North and South America from about two million years ago until about ten thousand years ago. Tigers,

8 . A new study suggests Earth could have lost up to 60 percent of its atmosphere in the collision of space objects that created the moon. Most scientists believe this event happened about 4 billion years ago when Earth was still developing. They think a massive object, possibly the size of the planet Mars, hit the Earth, sending vaporized particles (颗粒)into space. Gravity is believed to have brought these particles together to form the moon.
The study presents evidence that this collision might have caused Earth to lose between 10 to 60 percent of the atmosphere it had. A report on the study appeared in the publication Astrophysical Journal Letters. The researchers‘ impact assumption is one of three leading theories of how the moon was formed. The others suggest the moon was either created at the same time as Earth, or that it was captured by Earth's gravitational field as it traveled through space.
The researchers decided to explore how massive collisions of objects affected rocky planets with thin atmospheres. To do this, they carried out more than 300 “supercomputer simulations (模拟)The experiment considered the positions at which the objects hit the planet, the speed of the impacts, as well as the size and mass of the colliding objects. Earlier research suggested that impact collisions during the latter stages of the formation of a planet can affect its atmosphere. The computer models in this study expanded on this idea. They showed that a collision like the one that may have formed the moon likely took a large part of Earth's atmosphere.

9 . Driving to a friend’s house on a recent evening,I was attracted by the sight of the full moon rising just above my friend’s rooftops.I stopped to watch it for a few moments, thinking about what a pity it was that most city people, myself included, usually miss sights like this because we spend most of our lives indoors.
My friend had also seen it.He grew up living in a forest in Europe, and the moon meant a lot to him then.It had touched much of his life.
I know the feeling.Last December I took my seven-year-old daughter to the mountainous jungle of northern India with some friends. We stayed in a forest rest-house with no electricity or hot water. Our group had campfires outside every night, and indoors when it was too cold outside. The moon grew to its fullest during our trip.Between me and the high mountains lay three or four valleys. Not a light shone in them and not a sound could be heard. It was one of the quietest places I had ever known,a bottomless well of silence. And above me was the full moon, which struck me deeply.
Today our lives are filled with glass, metal, plastic and fibre-glass.We have televisions,cellphones,heaters,ovens,air-conditioners,cars and computers.
Struggling through traffic that evening at the end of a tiring day, most of it spent indoors,I thought:before long,I would like to live in a small cottage. There I will grow vegetables and read books and walk in the mountains.I may become an old man there, and wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled and measure out my life in coffee spoons. But I will be able to walk outside on a cold silent night and touch the moon.
