1 . Do Animals Have Friends?
When you see little animals playing together around a tree, or a cat and dog sleeping together in the living room, do you ever think — are they friends? One expert, Mike, believes that many animals do have friends. If they’re in the same group, they greet one another, travel together, play together and even share food with each other.
Playing together helps animals keep them close to the group. Wild dogs who don’t play much are more likely to leave the group on their own.
Sharing is another important part of friendship. For all animals, finding food is a matter of life and death. For some bats in Central and South America, if they don’t get a blood meal every three days, they die of hunger.
But sometimes members of a group also compete for food and mates, which can lead to fights. So making up after fights is a key skill. Sometimes after two male monkeys have a fight, they will sit apart, avoiding each other.

The American seafood staple of Maine lobster, or “lobsta” as they say in Maine, is becoming very popular on Asian dining tables. Maine lobsters were a featured course at last year’s state dinner when Chinese President Xi Jinping visited the White House. Now, the creatures with claws are becoming a big export to Asia.
The lobster’s home is in the Atlantic Ocean, anywhere from Newfoundland in Canada to North Carolina in the United States. But nearly 90 percent of the fishery activity happens in the state of Maine.
And the prices for fresh lobster have risen to a higher level. “Three years ago, the price was mediocre. We averaged around $2.50 to $3 per pound (or nearly half a kilogram) for the year,” said Chris Welch, a lobster boat captain. “This year, the price has been excellent. It’s better than I can remember in a lot of years.”
During one morning, a lobster order was being prepared for shipment to Hong Kong. The biggest challenge in shipping was logistics. Shippers have only 36 hours from the time lobsters are packed until arrival in China. Any lobster arriving after that time loses quality.
American shellfish (水生有壳动物) exports have grown rapidly in recent years. More than 23,000 kilograms of that type of seafood is exported to Asia every week via air. “We primarily export lobsters to Asia; probably about 80 percent to China and the other 20 percent to some other Asian countries,” said lobster dealer Stephanie Nadeau. “The countries of Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Korea and Japan are big lobster fans,” he said.

3 . One morning a deer rushed into a courtyard where a little boy was playing. The deer hooked the boy's clothing with its antlers(角).This scared the little boy so much that he let out a loud cry which brought his mother running out to see what was happening. She came out just in time and saw the deer running off towards the mountains with her little boy.
The mother was so afraid !She ran after the deer as fast as she could and not too far away. she found her son sitting on the grass safely. Seeing his mother. the little boy laughed and reached out his arms to her. His mother held him tight. She was so happy that she cried.
She hurried back with her dear son. When she got home, she was amazed at what she saw. The huge tree behind her house had fallen down while she was out running after the deer. The whole house was destroyed under the tree's great weight.
Then the mother remembered the day about a year before when a deer fleeing from a hurt had run into her house. She felt sorry for the frightened deer, so she covered it with some cloth and let it return to the forest.
The deer seemed to understand that she had saved its life. When leaving, it kept bowing its head to her as if it were thanking her for her kindness.
She never imagined that the deer could remember her help. It somehow knew the tree were going to fall and kill her and her son, so it came back to save them.
When the mother remembered all this, she said, “Saving the life of another is the same saving the life of your own.”

4 . People who live in Iceland are proud of their country and their origin. Complete independence from Denmark after World War II resulted in the country's fast development. They refuse to permit immigration(移民) though the country has a small population. Their attitude to foreigners is friendly but reserved(保守) .
The Icelanders regard themselves as one big family. Most of them earn their living by farming and people' hopes are centered on the land and its soil. Typical for rural Iceland are the isolated valley farms against mountains. Cultivated grassland stretches out from the buildings.
They mainly raise sheep and cattle. In spring, flocks of sheep are driven to mountain grassland and allowed to wander freely over the summer. When autumn puts its first mark on the mountains, the sheep are rounded up and driven down.
As in all countries where winter and darkness take up most of the year, the center of life is the home. The houses of Iceland were once built of wood, but now cement (水泥) is used in towns and stones in the countryside. During the long winters the Icelanders rarely go out of the house. When they must go out, they put raincoats over their heavy woolen overcoats and furs to keep out the damp.

Like kids, many animals experience fear and they respond to the feeling in variety of ways.A frightened turtle pulls its head and legs inside its shell.A small fish will swim away when a big, hungry fish approaches.
Some animals respond to fear in ways you might not expect. The first example is that the fear of being eaten can scare some frogs right out of their eggs. Warkentin made the surprising discovery while studying red—eyed tree frogs in Costa Rica.
In this species, female frogs attach jellylike clumps(果冻一样的块状物)of their eggs to the undersides of leaves. The leaves hang on branches that dangle(悬挂)over ponds. After they hatch from the eggs, the tadpoles(蝌蚪)then fall into the water, where they eventually grow into adult frogs.
Tree frog eggs usually grow for 6 days before hatching. If they sense that a hungry snake is about to attack, however, they can hatch up to 2 days ahead of schedule. As the snakes are unable to swim,by falling into the water early, the tadpoles can escape.
If hatching early helps protect red—eyed tree frogs from snakes, you might wonder why their eggs don’t always hatch sooner. It turns out that hatching early brings its own danger.Once tadpoles land in the water, hungry fish and other animals like to eat them too.Staying in their eggs for a full 6 days, then, allows frog embryos(胚胎)to grow big and strong. This extra growth improves their chances of surviving in the water.
