Dealing with Difficult Relationships

Everyone has at least one awkward or     1     relationship. It may be with somebody who will     2     your energy whenever you are with them. Or worse, it could be someone who always cuts you down. This person may be a family member or even a friend. No matter who it is, it’s necessary that you learn to set boundaries for yourself. Otherwise this kind of relationship can chip away at your self-esteem.

Setting boundaries for difficult relationships starts by     3     how you are affected by the relationship. Do they bring you closer to your goals or pull you farther away? For example, it’s time to study for tomorrow’s test. But your friend wants to take you to a party. Here, setting boundaries will help protect your     4     goals.

Next, decide how much time you should spend with these people. It’s easy to overcommit yourself. But it’s difficult to help others if you forget to protect your own     5    .

How do you know if a relationship is unhealthy, and it’s time to set boundaries? Here are a few practical questions to ask yourself.

1. How does this relationship affect me?

Every     6     can affect you positively or negatively. For example, someone who pressures you to something you’re not comfortable doing will     7     you out. But a friend who considers how you feel will respect your     8     to try something new.

2. Why am I in this relationship in the first place?

People may try to keep you in an unhealthy relationship. By     9     you it’s your obligation or duty, you forget about your own needs. Sadly, by remaining     10     to these people, you forget who you are. You allow them to take advantage of you or even belittle you.

Settling boundaries requires taking a long, honest look at yourself. By saying “no” to harmful patterns in relationships, you say “yes” to a healthier you.

We all hope that the values that are important to each of us are passed along to our children.

Often, however, that hope is challenged by a(n)    1    of pop culture messages,     peer pressure,       and over-scheduled lives that leave little time for good   counsel or    2    .       It’s       easy to forget that learning values and character at home   is as important as any schoolwork or    3    activity.

In the real world of jobs and career, people are judged by two standards: their professional skills and their personal    4    . While grade school, high school,   and college can teach   skills and    5    , it’s up to parents to teach children the    6    that make for success     in the real world—diligence, a cooperative attitude, creativity, optimism, assertiveness, and honesty.   Schools—    7    colleges—   don’t   focus on   these   issues.     That’s   the   job   of   the parents, so take the assignment seriously.   Send your kids into the world,   ready to handle not     only the tasks of life but also its hurdles, social obstacles, and frustrations with finesse and character.

You really can’t start soon enough. After all, children need personal    8    and morals as much as any adult.     Bullies will always be around;     tasks won’t always be assigned fairly; the good guys won’t always win; petty concerns will   often trump   issues of substance;   and   money won’t always be in ample supply;    9    children to the harsher realities of life isn’t     cruel; giving them that experience and    10    them through it is part and parcel of raising kids to have courage, resiliency and honor.

How sound and colour influence the taste of food

The sound people hear while they are eating food can change the way they think it tastes, scientists have discovered. In fact, researchers have also found that changing the colour of a food can influence the flavour     1     by   consumers.   Food   manufacturers   are   now   hoping to     2     the   findings   in   an   attempt to make their foods more appealing.

It was     3     thought that the sense of taste and   smell were the only human senses that played a role in experiencing flavour. Professor Charles Spence, a sensory psychologist at Oxford University, is a leading expert in his field. He believes that it is possible to change the flavor of food simply by exciting people’s sense of hearing. For example, listening to waves hitting the sea shore can make     4     detect seafood flavours.

Professor Spence has also discovered that     5     changing the colour of a food can influence the     way it tastes. He found that by changing a drink from yellow to a deep red, it is possible to make it taste up to 12 per cent sweeter than it really is. He said: ‘This colour has strong     6     with very ripe fruit.’

Flavour is not just as simple as the way something tastes, as all the   other senses come into     7     and some can dominate the way the brain   will     8     a food. Ice cream activates a part of the brain     which is just behind the eyes and is where emotions are     9    . By melting, it changes its physical     10     and creates contrasts that continually keep your senses interested.

So next time you are in a restaurant or a supermarket, or just sitting down at home to eat something, think about whether your choices have been influenced by sound or colour. You may be surprised!

4 . Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.
A. alert       B. classify          C. commit     D. delicately     E. gentle        F. impose
G. labels     H. moderation       I. relieve       J. signals          K. simply
Let's say you've decided you want to eat more healthfully. However, you don't have time to carefully plan menus for meals or read food     1    at the supermarket. Since you really    2    yourself to a healthier lifestyle, a little help would come in handy, wouldn't it? This is where a "choice architect" can help    3    some of the burden of doing it all yourself. Choice architects are people who organize the contexts in which customers make decisions. For example, the person who decides the layout of your local supermarket-including which shelf the peanut butter goes on, and how the oranges are piled up—is a choice architect.
Governments don't have to    4    healthier lifestyles through laws for example, smoking bans. Rather, if given an environment created by a choice architect-one that encourages us to choose what is best-we will do the right things. In other words, there will be designs that gently push customers toward making healthier choices, without removing freedom of choice. This idea combines freedom to choose with    5    hints from choice architects, who aim to help people live longer, healthier, and happier lives.
The British and Swedish governments have introduced a so-called "traffic light system" to     6    foods as healthy or unhealthy. This means that customers can see at a glance how much fat, sugar, and salt each product contains    7    by looking at the lights on the package. A green light     8    that the amounts of the three nutrients are healthy; yellow indicates that the customer should be    9    ; and red means that the food is high in at least one of the three nutrients and should be eaten in     10    . The customer is given important health information, but is still free to decide what to choose.
