If you're like most people, you've lost yourself in fake listening many times. You go to history class, sit in the third row, and look directly at the instructor as she speaks. But your mind is far away, floating in the clouds of pleasant daydreams. Occasionally you come back to earth: the instructor writes an important    1    on the chalk-board, and you    2    copy it in your notebook. Every once in a while the instructor makes a witty remark, causing others in the class to laugh. You smile politely, pretending that you've heard the remark and found it    3    humorous. You have a vague sense of    4    that you aren't paying close attention, but you tell yourself that any     5    you miss can be picked up from a friend's notes. Besides, the instructor's talking about road construction in ancient Rome, and nothing could be more    6    . So back you go into your private little world. Only later do you realize you've missed important information for a test.

Fake listening may be easily exposed, since many speakers are sensitive to facial cues and can tell if you're merely pretending to listen. Your    7    expression, and the faraway look in your eyes are the cues that    8    your inattentiveness.

Even if you're not exposed, there's another reason to avoid fakery: it's easy for this behavior to become a habit. For some people, the habit is so deeply rooted that they    9    start daydreaming when a speaker begins talking on something    10    or uninteresting. As a result, they miss lots of valuable information.

If you don't like school, the first step is finding out why. You might not like school because a bully is bothering you, or because a kid you don't like wants to hang around with you. Or maybe you don't get along with your teacher. You might feel different or    1    that you don't have enough friends.

Sometimes it's a problem with your classes and schoolwork. Maybe the work is too easy and you get    2    . Or maybe the work is too hard, or you don't feel as    3    as the other kids. Reading may be difficult for you, but you are    4    to do a lot of it. You may be getting farther and farther behind, and it may seem like you'll never catch up.

When you know why you don't like school, you can start to take    5    to make things better.

It's a good idea to talk to someone about your problems with school. Your mom, dad, relative, teacher, or school counselor will be able to help you. It's especially important to tell an adult if the problem is that you're being     6    or someone hurts you physically.

Another good idea is to write down your feelings about school in a journal. You can use a journal or diary or just write in an ordinary notebook. It's a great way to let out    7    that may be stuck inside you. And you don't have to    8    what you've written with others.

If you feel    9    or like you can't keep up with your schoolwork, your teachers and school counselors want to help. Teachers want and expect you to ask for help with learning stuff. If all of your subjects seem really hard, a school counselor can help you sort things out. Special help is    10    if you need it. Try not to let the problems go on too long. It's easier to catch up on one chapter than the whole book!

"Soon, you're going to have to move out!" cried my neighbor upon seeing the largest tomato plant known to mankind, or at least known in my neighborhood.

One tiny 9-inch plant, bought for $1. 25 in the spring, has already taken over much of my rose bed,     1    much of other plants, and is well on its way to the front door.

Roses require a good deal of care, and if it weren't for the pleasure they give, it wouldn't be worth the work. As it is, I have a garden full of    2    roses for most of the year. Bushes must be pruned(剪枝) in early spring, leaving ugly woody    3    until the new growth appears a few weeks later. It was the space available in the garden that led me into planting just one little tomato plant. A big mistake!

Soil conditions made it just    4    for roses turn out to be even more perfect for tomatoes. The daily watering coupled with full sun and    5    fertilizing(施肥)have turned the little plant into a tall bush. The cage I placed around it as the plant grew has long since disappeared under the thick    6    .

Now the task I face in    7    the fruit is twofold: First, I have to find the red ones among the leaves, which means I almost have to stand on my head, and once found I have to reach down and under, pick the tomatoes and withdraw my full fist without dropping the prize so dearly won. I found two full-blown white roses completely    8    as I picked tomatoes in June. But they were weak and the leaves already yellow for lack of    9    .

Here I am faced with a painful small decision: To destroy a wonderful and    10    tomato plant that offers up between ten and twenty ripe sweet tomatoes each day or say goodbye to several expensive and treasured roses. Like Scarlett in Gone with the Wind I'll think about that tomorrow.

The Paris Opera House is one of the extraordinary buildings in the world. It contains levels beyond levels of cellars, fountains, chandeliers and even its own ghost! The history of this performance hall is dark and interesting, and its mysterious quality is perfectly    1    in architecture, literature and music.

The House seats two thousand and has seventeen stories, taking up three acres of land. Seven of these are    2    the ground, and two contain pieces of the famous lake later pictured in Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera. Part of the    3    of the opera house is the levels that it inhabits underground. There are chorus rooms, green rooms, ball rooms, set rooms, cellars for waste props, closets, dressing rooms, and many more kinds of rooms making up the building. The underground levels contain all sorts of unpleasant and horrible objects from various operas that have been produced. Their    4    effect sparked the idea behind Gaston Leroux's The Phantom of the Opera. The lake on the last floor was accidentally sprung when a worker knocked against a pipe underground.

The Phantom of the Opera, later    5    into an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, was a book based upon the opera house. It portrays a young singer, Christine, and the Phantom who    6    in love with her, Erik. Other characters include Meg, a young dancer, and Raoul, the lover that goes to Christine's    7    and eventually wins her heart. In Leroux's tale, the Phantom, a mysterious    8    underground, kills, injures and frightens members of the cast before the audience and the cast in turn chase him down and drive him away from the theater. In the    9    story, the Phantom commits suicide by    10    himself because he fails to win Christine's love.

Work on this House began in 1861 and ended, fifteen years later. , It cost over forty-seven million francs, and gave its creator and workers a big headache.
