文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了研究显示,窗户不仅能有采光和通风等作用,它还对社会交往和心理健康有影响。文章介绍了研究开展的过程以及研究的发现。

1 . Windows are hard. They are particularly hard in northern countries like Sweden, where during winter the days are short and the sun is very low in the sky. Window design in cold climate is a technical balancing act. You want it big to get the light, but you want it small to minimize the heat loss. But there is so much more that windows have to do for our social and emotional well-being.

A recent study published in Buildings and Cities looks at the many roles that windows play and the way people use them, exploring daylight, the visual connection to the outside and the role of windows in the home during the day and night. Windows do much more than just provide light and air: “Windows represent an enjoyment of the home and fulfil much more than physical needs. They must allow sufficient personal control over fresh and cool air, sound, sunlight, street lighting and privacy.”

The study authors, Kiran Maini Gerhardsson and Thorbjorn Laike, interviewed occupants living in multi-family dwellings. Windows turned out to be very important for occupant comfort, for visual connection to the outside. But they also had to be able to be screened for privacy; sometimes these conflicted. Sometimes the sill height was important. One occupant, Dmitry was going to add some frosted film to the bottom of his window. “I don’t want to see the faces of others when I’m sitting down, but when I’m standing and see their faces, I can wave to them,” he said.

Interviewees preferred daylight to artificial light for many reasons, including as a time indicator, and “because it varies, increases room brightness and improves mood”. Our bodies need the change from red to blue and back to red.

The authors conclude windows serve many functions that go beyond just light and air and should be designed accordingly. “There is much more to such experiences than the satisfaction of physical needs. Perceiving a room to be enough daylight, adequately pleasant and spacious seems to be equally essential, and a view of the world outside brings information to inhabit-ants. However, windows also need to prevent people outside from peering in moderate bright sunlight during the day.”

4. What can be the best title for the text?

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。主要说明了Priscilla Ouchida的“节能”住宅变成了一个可怕的梦,其原因是严重的室内空气污染。而由于日本大力节能,室内空气污染没有得到足够的重视。

4 . Priscilla Ouchida’s “energy efficient” house turned out to be a horrible dream. When she and her engineer husband married a few years ago, they built a $100,000 three-bedroom home in California. Tightly sealed to prevent air leaks, the house was equipped with small double-paned windows and several other energy-saving features. Problems began as soon as the couple moved in, however. Priscilla’s eyes burned. Her throat was constantly dry. She suffered from headaches and could hardly sleep. It was as though she had suddenly developed a strange illness.

Experts finally traced the cause of her illness. The level of formaldehyde gas in her kitchen was twice the maximum allowed by federal standards for chemical workers. The source of the gas? Her new kitchen cabinets and wall-to-wall carpeting.

The Ouchidas are victims of indoor air pollution, which is not given sufficient attention partly because of the nation’s drive to save energy. The problem itself isn’t new. “The indoor environment was dirty long before energy conservation came along,” says Moschandreas, a pollution scientist at Geomet Technologies in Maryland. “Energy conservation has tended to accentuate the situation in some cases.”

The problem appears to be more troublesome in newly constructed homes rather than old ones. Back in the days when energy was cheap, home builders didn’t worry much about unsealed cracks. Because of such leaks, the air in an average home was replaced by fresh outdoor air about once an hour. As a result, the pollutants generated in most households seldom built up to dangerous levels.

1. It can be learned from the passage that the Ouchidas’ house ________.
A.is well worth the money spent on its construction
B.is almost faultless from the point of energy conservation
C.failed to meet energy conservation standards
D.was designed and constructed in a scientific way
2. What made the Ouchidas’ new house a horrible dream?
A.Poor quality of the air inside.B.Poor quality of the construction.
C.Gas leakage in the kitchen.D.The newly painted walls.
3. The word “accentuate” (Para. 3) most probably means “________”.
A.relieveB.accelerateC.worsenD.improve
4. Why were cracks in old houses not a big concern?
A.Because indoor cleanliness was not emphasized.
B.Because energy used to be inexpensive.
C.Because environmental protection was given top priority.
D.Because they were technically unavoidable.
5. This passage is most probably taken from an article entitled ________.
A.Energy ConservationB.House Building Crisis
C.Air Pollution IndoorsD.Traps in Building Construction

6 . Slurp&Sip is a cheerful bistro (小酒馆) in Shanghai that specializes in exotic southwestern food from Yunnan Province.

Niu Yun, who hails from Kunming, Yunnan Province, opened her first eatery (小餐馆) in 2014 after studying in London.

“At that time there weren’t many choices for Yunnan food, and I think the province has so much tasty food and such a diverse food culture that I could bring to Shanghai,” she said. “After meeting a few good friends who also love Yunnan cuisine, we decided to open a simple Yunnan eatery focusing on street food to start with, introducing Yunnan rice noodles and street snacks I used to buy every day after school.”

Opening this new restaurant after operating Slurp for a few years is a natural step for Niu Yun and her partners. The menu of Slurp&Sip pays homage (敬意) to Niu’s origins with a major focus on Dai flavors.

“My mum is Dai, and I remember every time she brought me back to her hometown the food really made a strong impression. From how they cook and the ingredients they use, all are very special to me. Dai food is all about fresh and mixed ingredients, as well as natural and original ways of cooking,” she said.

“I feel diners shouldn’t only know about crossing the bridge rice noodles and steampot chicken when we talk about Yunnan food. We have such a diverse culture with so many different minorities, so I decided to start with the one I’m the most connected with,” she added.

Dai cuisine is characterized by a combination of fresh herbs, chilis and acidic elements. It incorporates lots of great produce from the province’s southernmost prefecture.

Dai food is also full of barbecue items often seen in night markets, such as roasted lemongrass stuffed fish, roasted chicken and roasted pork with Dai spices, all of which grace Slurp&Sip’s menu.
