Last year, Zhang Pingyu paid visit to London. Worried about the time available, Zhang Pingyu had made a list of the site she wanted to see. It was the Tower which she visited first. Fancy! This solid stone, square tower had been remained standing for one thousand years. Many new buildings had expanded around it. Therefore, it was still part of a royal palace and prison combined. There followed St Paul’s Cathedral built after the terrible fire of London in 1666. It looked splendidly when first built. Westminster Abbey, too, was very interesting. Then just as he came out of the abbey, Pingyu heard the famous sound of the clock Big Ben, ring out the hour.
The next day Pingyu was leaving London to Windsor Castle. “Perhaps I will see the Queen?” she wondered as she fall asleep.

5 . When a driver slams on the brakes to avoid hitting a pedestrian crossing the road illegally, she is making a moral decision that shifts risk from the pedestrian to the people in the car. Self-driving cars might soon have to make such ethical (道德的)judgments on their own — but settling on a universal moral code for the vehicles could be a tough task, suggests a survey.

The largest ever survey of machine ethics, called the Moral Machine, laid out 13 possible situations in which someone’s death was unavoidable. Respondents were asked to choose who to spare in situations that involved a mix of variables: young or old, rich or poor, more people or fewer. Within 18 months, the online quiz had recorded 40 million decisions made by people from 233 countries and territories.

When the researchers analysed these answers, they found that the nations could be divided into three groups. One contains North America and several European nations where Christianity has been the dominant (占支配地位的)religion; another includes countries such as Japan, Indonesia and Pakistan, with strong Confucian or Islamic traditions. A third group consists of countries in Central and South America, such as Colombia and Brazil. The first group showed a stronger preference for sacrificing older lives to save younger ones than did the second group, for example.

The researchers also identified relationships between social and economic factors in a country. They found that people from relatively wealthy countries with strong institutions, such as Finland and Japan, more often chose to hit people who stepped into traffic illegally than did respondents in nations with weaker institutions, such as Nigeria or Pakistan.

People rarely face such moral dilemmas, and some cities question whether the possible situations posed in the online quiz are relevant to the ethical and practical questions surrounding driverless cars. But the researchers argue that the findings reveal cultural differences that governments and makers of self-driving cars must take into account if they want the vehicles to gain public acceptance.

At least Barbara Wege, who heads a group working on autonomous-vehicle ethics at Audi in Ingolstadt, Germany, says such studies are valuable. Wege argues that self-driving cars would cause fewer accidents, proportionally, than human drivers do each year—but that people might focus more on events involving robots.

Surveys such as the Moral Machine can help to begin public discussions about these unavoidable accidents that might develop trust. “We need to come up with a social consensus,” she says, “about which risks we are willing to take.”

1. Why is it difficult to set universal moral rules for programming self-driving cars?
A.Social values always change with the times.
B.Moral choices vary between different cultures.
C.Drivers have a preference for sacrificing the weak.
D.Car makers are faced with decisions of life or death.
2. The researchers conducted the study by_____.
A.using a massive online quiz worldwide
B.comparing different cultures and customs
C.dividing the respondents into three groups
D.performing a series of controlled experiments
3. According to the study, in which country are drivers more likely to hit a pedestrian crossing the road illegally?
A.NigeriaB.Colombia
C.FinlandD.Indonesia
4. Barbara Wege would probably agree that _____.
A.Self-driving cars will greatly improve the traffic environment
B.Accidents caused by self-driving cars might receive more attention
C.Problems involving self-driving cars might shake the public trust in society
D.Car makers neednt take the risk of solving self-driving car ethical dilemmas

6 . As the weather costs you a loss on trains and flights, we look at your rights.

Cancelled trains

On a single ticket, a passenger will usually receive 25% of the fare if the train is delayed by 15 minutes. If the delay reaches 30 minutes, the compensation(补偿金)rises to 50%, and if it’s over an hour you should be able to reclaim the whole cost. Clear arrangements vary according to train operators(运营商).

If you were due to travel, to say Aberdeen from London, your train is cancelled and you decide not to travel, you can get a full compensation. If you had a non-cancelable ticket with one operator, and failed to make that train because the connecting train was delayed, you can take the next available train.

Flights

If your flight is cancelled because of the snow you have the right to s full compensation of the ticket, or to be rerouted home on a later flight.

But you will have no right to get a delay or cancellation compensation under EU rules, because the snow is an extraordinary circumstance beyond the airline’s control. If you don’t take the compensation and choose to be rerouted, and it means you are stuck at the airport overnight, it’s the airline’s duty to pay for a reasonably priced hotel room and meals.

The airline has to reroute you at the earliest opportunity, or at the passenger’s free time, you are supposed to take the availability of seats.

If you choose to be rerouted or if your departure is delayed by more than two hours, airlines also have to provide assistance such as food. The airlines keep this quiet and getting the money out of the low-cost operators can be a hard job. Keep evidence of cancellations, all receipts, and use your mobile to video any offer to pay by airline staff.

1. What is your compensation determined by when your trains are delayed due to bad weather?
A.The operator.
B.The price of the ticket.
C.The length of delay time.
D.The class of the service and the price of the ticket.
2. How many choices do you have if you are to travel Aberdeen from London, and your train is cancelled?
A.One.B.Two.
C.Three.D.Four.
3. How can you save the trouble in getting g money out of the low-cost operators?
A.By keeping the evidence and videoing any offer to pay.
B.At the earliest opportunity, or the passenger’s free time.
C.By preventing the airlines from keeping their duty quiet.
D.By arguing reasonably with the staff of the airlines offering you the flight.

7 . All China’s major cities have good transport     1     (network). There are the tour buses, mini buses, taxis, as well as public buses,

Buses in Chinese towns are always     2     (crowd). The fare depends on distance, and is payable to the     3     (conduct) of buses.

A taxi is often     4     most convenient means of travel in the City. They are available at airports, railway stations and hotels and even in urban areas. The total fare depends on the starting meter price,     5     can range from 5 to 12 yuan, and the distance. Extra fees     6     (charge) for waiting and low speed driving during traffic jams. If you take a taxi after 11 pm, a 20 percent surcharge applies over the basic fare.

The minibus is a compromise between the     7     (relative) expensive taxis and full public transport. Their charge is a little more than that of the bus, about 2 yuan or more     8     (depend) on distance, but it is very convenient, because it can stop     9     any point you want along the route.

Tour buses, normally     10     (equip) with air conditioning and TV, are managed by travel agencies, hotels and airports and provided for short tours. A tour guide is usually present on such buses.

8 . I’m learning to drive in Switzerland. I think it will be a good idea to learn now because I have plenty of free time and am earning a little money to pay for lessons. I never learnt when I lived in the UK, so luckily driving on the “wrong” side isn’t a problem.

However, there are a lot of rules to remember. When you see a road to your right and there are no white lines on the ground, the cars to your right have the right to go before your car and you have to stop for them. In practice, lots of people forget this and cars either wait for each other while both drivers try to remember what to do, or beep (鸣喇叭) at each other if both try to go at the same time!

When you drive round a roundabout, you should check all your mirrors. To remember how to do this, I often count them aloud—one, two, three—then a second glance at your blind spot when you’re in the roundabout. One friend came driving with me and after about an hour asked why on earth I was counting. He had passed his test so long ago, he couldn’t remember ever having to check three mirrors!

Driving still seems scary to me so I drive quite slowly. I also don’t know the countryside roads very well and don’t know what’s coming up round the comer or over the next hill. I drive slowly so I feel safe, but my driving instructor tells me to speed up or cars will bump into me from behind or try to overtake somewhere dangerous. So driving slowly is just as dangerous as driving fast!

I’m not a very practical person so learning to drive has been a challenge. I don’t have a lot of confidence and find it quite demotivating to do something that doesn’t come naturally to me. To make driving more fun and interesting, I learn in Swiss German, so my instructor gives me instructions in Swiss. This way I’ve tricked myself into enjoying driving and hopefully will pass the test!

1. What can be inferred from the first paragraph?
A.It isn’t a proper time for the author to take driving lessons now.
B.Driving on the “wrong side” doesn’t influence the author..
C.The author was too poor to pay for driving lessons in Switzerland.
D.It is easy for the author to get confused about the driving rules in Switzerland.
2. The author often counts “one, two, three” aloud when driving round a roundabout to ________.
A.remind himself to check the mirrorsB.speed up
C.overtake somewhere dangerousD.make driving more interesting
3. What does the underlined word “demotivating” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A.Encouraging.B.Amazing.
C.Exciting.D.Discouraging.
4. What is the text mainly about?
A.Driving speed.
B.Strict driving instructors.
C.Anecdotes of my driving experience.
D.Complicated driving rules in Switzerland.
