2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

The M1 highway was closed down in both directions due to flooding, leaving thousands of vehicles stuck on the spot. Several hundred had been stuck for at least 30 hours since the road was cut at about 7.30 am on Monday.

Unluckily, I was one of the people who were waiting for help. There are almost 100 vehicles trapped on the road about 800 meters long. And one benefit was that there was a short road tunnel (隧道) that had provided shelter from the pouring rain as well as some lighting after nightfall. So how people have felt depended on how well they stored food. I was totally in trouble because of lacking food. I heard someone knocking on my window while I was worrying about my situation.

A man, who was driving a truck full of raw (生的) chicken leaving for downtown, opened his truck’s door and shared the chicken around by dinner time on Monday. This was a thriving community of shared resources and resourcefulness, where the truck driver dished out food that had been ordered for supermarkets. And others helped to cook the raw chicken by the tool which were found in their cars.

I took the chicken from the truck driver and, after expressing my thanks, I lost in thought: how do I cook this chicken? Just as I was looking around in confusion, a girl not far away waved to me, “Come over here, we have cooked meat.” “No, thanks,” I replied casually. But I was so hungry that I couldn’t help but walk over to her with the chicken. She took the chicken from my hand, cleaned it and put it on the grill (烧烤架). I was impressed by her masterful way. After a while, some meat was cooked and I took the meat she handed to me.

3 . Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

Social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace and Orkut are now estimated to have more than 700 million users worldwide. As users can create any profile of themselves they choose, you might expect them to portray themselves in the best possible way. When putting up a profile, it would be reasonable for them to present positive images, choose classy interests, and carefully express their thoughts so as to appear more intelligent than in real life. But according to recent research, this is not the case. Far from presenting themselves in a pleasing way, most users’ profiles reflect their true personalities, and reveal both psychological and natural physical weaknesses.

Research was carried out on 250 Facebook users who filled in a personality questionnaire. Results were compared with the same people’s Facebook profiles. The survey set out to assess not only the participants’ actual personality, but their “ideal” personality--in other words, what kind of person they would be if they actually possessed all their ideal characteristics. These results were then compared with the participants’ Facebook profiles. What emerged was astonishing: far from being idealized versions of themselves, people’s online profiles roughly resemble what they were really like. Their profiles accurately reflected how agreeable, outgoing, hardworking and sociable they were in real life.

It’s not entirely clear why online profiles display users’ personalities so accurately. It could be that users want to portray themselves as they really are, or it could be that people attempt to present an ideal image of themselves but in fact fail to do so. One thing seems clear: social networking sites can in no way be considered a false online world that is idealized and removed from reality; rather, they are simply another way in which people choose to interact with each other.

Prepare for Water Day Zero

Earlier this year alarming headlines blared that Cape Town, South Africa, was headed for Water Day Zero — the date when the city's taps would go dry because its reservoirs would become dangerously low on water. That day — originally expected in mid-April 2018 — has been postponed until at least 2019, thanks to water rationing and a welcome rainy season. But the conditions that led to this desperate situation will inevitably occur again, hitting cities all over the planet.

As the climate warms, extreme droughts and vanishing water supplies will likely become more common. But even without the added impact of climate change, normal rainfall variation plays an enormous role in year-to-year water availability. These ordinary patterns now have extraordinary effects because urban populations have had tremendous growth: by 2050 the United Nations projects that two thirds of the world's people will live in cities. Urban planners and engineers need to learn from past rainfall variability to improve their predictions and take future demand into account to build more resilient infrastructure.

How did Cape Town get into a Water Day Zero situation? The city gets its water from six reservoirs in Western Cape province, which usually fill up during the rainy season, from May through August. But since 2015 the region has been suffering from the worst drought in a century, and the water in those reservoirs dwindled (减少) dangerously. Compounding the problem, Cape Town's population has grown substantially, increasing demand. The city actually did a pretty good job of keeping demand low by reducing leaks in the system, a major cause of water waste, and has even won awards for its conservation policies. But the government of South Africa was slow to declare a national disaster in the areas hit hardest by the drought, paving the way for the recent crisis.

Fortunately, steps can be taken to avoid urban water crises. In general, a combination of approaches that relies on multiple water sources is probably most effective. Cape Town has already begun implementing a number of projects, including tapping groundwater and building water-recycling plants.

The global community has an opportunity right now to take action to prevent a series of Water Day Zero crises. If we don't act, many cities may soon face a time when there isn't a drop to drink.
