1 . Each year the Hay Festival attracts some of the world's leading writers, artists and thinkers, to talk, share their thoughts and ideas and meet audiences. Ensuring guests are warmly received and well looked after during their stay has always been a top mission and one of the Festival's key jobs.
All events management student volunteers need to be attentive and helpful. In return, they get the chance to meet some amazing, creative people, and experience the daily running of a fast-moving international festival , where time-keeping is important and, above all, performers and audience leave having had a thoroughly enjoyable, stimulating (启发性的) and thought-inspiring day.
We require volunteers in two areas;
Events Management
Events management student volunteers help out with a wide range of duties including meeting and greeting authors, assisting with book signings, accompanying artists to events, stage management assistance and manning reception desks.
Creative Workshops
Creative workshops student volunteers assist authors, illustrators and workshop leaders in the setting up and running of workshops. These roles may interest those who have a particular interest in visual arts and I or illustration.
Dates
The 2020 festival dates are Thursday 21 May—Sunday 31 May. Applicants will need to be available for the duration of the festival.

2 . Having given good responses to all questions, Thomas, with a perfect resume, failed his job interview last week. Christine, the manager responsible for the interview, showed an actual preference for Thomas but decided to offer the job to her second choice, adding that the fact that he never looked her in the eye said “untrustworthy”.
“It was not until I attended a diversity workshop that I realized the person we passed over was the perfect person.” Christine admitted later. “What I didn’t known at that time was that the candidate’s odd behavior was simply a cultural misunderstanding. He was an Asian-American raised in a family where respect for those in authority was shown by turning away your eyes. I was just thrown off by the lack of eye contact, not realizing it was cultural,” Christine says.
As the world becomes smaller and our workplaces become more diverse, it is increasingly essential to expand our understanding of others and to reexamine some of our false assumptions. Mindsets helps organizations and individuals see their own blind spots.
Unexpected advantage
At a time when hiring qualified people is becoming more difficult, employers who can have no personal biases have an obvious advantage. Gender unawareness
Gorden is an account executive who attended one of the workshops. “Through some of the lessons, I discovered my personal bias.” he recalls. “I had a management position open in my department; and the two finalists were a man and a woman. Had I not attended this workshop, I would have automatically assumed the man was the best candidate because the position required quite a bit of extensive travel. My assumption would have been that even though both candidates were great and could have been successful in the position, I assumed the woman would have wanted to be home with her children and not travel. Thanks to the workshop, I have learnt to make decisions based on fairness.”

5 . Welcome to the North Pole Adventure
The North Pole Adventure is a one-of-a-kind interactive Christmas attraction for the entire family. Unlike other Christmas attractions, it is open from November 26 until Christmas Eve. It is not a guided tour. While elves (小精灵) are throughout the adventure to interact with your children, your kids can spend as much time in each area as they wish. 6 . Women Whose Inventions Changed Life
Rachel Zimmerman-Blissymbol Printer (1984)
At the age of 12, Zimmerman invented the Blissymbol Printer, which helps people with physical disabilities communicate via symbols that get translated into written language. What began as a project for a school science fair ended up competing at the World Exhibition of Achievement of Young Inventors. Zimmerman now works at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where she develops innovations combining space technology and assistive intelligence.
Olga D. Gonzalez-Sanabria—Long Cycle-Life Nickel-Hydrogen Batteries (1987)
Director of the Systems Management Office and the highest ranking Hispanic at NASA Glenn Research Center, Gonzalez-Sanabria played a critical role in the development of the "Long Cycle-Life Nickel-Hydrogen Batteries" which help enable the International Space Station power system. She has since won the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal and the NASA Exceptional Service Medal.
Ann Tsukamoto-Stem Cell Isolation (分离) (1991)
Tsukamoto and her colleagues were the first scientists to identify and isolate blood-forming stem cells. Patented in 1991-the first of 12 patents related to her research-Tsukamoto has furthered her research and thanks to her, bone marrow transplants (骨髓移植) have saved the lives of thousands of people battling blood cancer.
Donna Strickland-Chirped Pulse Amplification (2018)
The third woman to win the Nobel Prize in Physics, Strickland, along with Dr. Gerard Mourou of France, has significantly advanced the science of lasers (激光). They developed a technology for creating short, powerful laser pulses. The technique, called Chirped Pulse Amplification, has been used in corrective eye surgeries.
