Mei Mei frowned as she helped her mother and father set out the cooking supplies in the shiny steel kitchen. Her family had just moved here from San Francisco, having bought a small restaurant, which was set to open in the next few days.
“Moving here was a stupid idea. I have lost all my friends in San Francisco. What should I do now?” Mei Mei grumbled, mostly to herself.
“What's that?” Her mother asked, opening a box and lifting out several pots and a wok.
“Nothing,” Mei Mei mumbled. The girl had been complaining about the move, but her parents had made the decision and were now too busy getting ready for the grand opening to listen to her complaints.
The first few days at her new school hadn't been easy, either. She found it hard to talk to people she didn't know, and it seemed like the students hadn't even noticed her. Mei Mei sighed and got back to washing dishes.
On the day of the grand opening, Mei Mei's parents were all smiles, welcoming customers into the restaurant, brightly decorated in gold and red. Even Mei Mei was in a good mood as she rushed around, seating guests, handing out menus, and pouring tall glasses of water. This was a big day for her family.
At one of the tables sat a family with two daughters who were about Mei Mei's age. As she filled their glasses, Mei Mei realized the twins were in her class. Mei Mei ducked her head down so her long hair covered her face, and she turned away from the table.
Mei Mei's mother found her soon after, in the kitchen loading the dishwasher.
“Honey, what are you doing back here? We need you out front with the customers.”

3 . The jaguars(美洲豹) didn't bother me much during the day. Adonis, our local guide who was leading us deep into the Guatemalan jungle, guaranteed that we wouldn't come under attack from the jaguars. The most recent time he had seen one was more than a year ago. Last week, he had spotted some jaguar tracks, which was probably about as close to the animals as we would get, he said.
But his guarantee meant little that night as I cowered in my hammock(吊床) under the Central American stars. Now my mind turned every soft sound of waving leaves into a moving big cat full of murderous intent(probably to get back at the rude human who had interrupted its life.)And, if it wasn't a jaguar ready to attack, it was a poisonous snake, picking which of my bottoms to sink its long sharp tooth into.
Tiredness calmed my overactive imagination and I slept slightly. Next day, big surprise: no death by either snake bite or jaguar attack and injury. We packed up our stuff and continued toward our destination Mirador, the site of the tallest temple in the Mayan world.
Although we may have questioned why we had left a perfectly nice beach to come here, that night no doubts remained. Just before sunset we took our places at the top of the temple hill. A Mayan astrologer(占星家)had probably sat in the same place 2,000 years before and improved his knowledge of the Milky Way.
Tonight, as with every night, spectacular pink shades marked the western skyline. The sky darkened and, one by one, the stars shone with a soft light into life.

4 . Some 15 years ago, Ross Willard volunteered with a food program in Harrisburg, Pa.. He found children riding bicycles with brakes that didn’t work. The retired railroad manager saw the importance of safely riding for children, so he began repairing bicycles on street corners.
Over time, more and more people came to have their bicycles repaired. Mr. Willard opened his first shop in 2007 and three years later he founded his own company Recycle Bicycle Harrisburg. The all-volunteer nonprofit organization has been offering service for residents in the community. Regular visitors include children and their parents, as well as halfway house residents seeking to perform community service hours while also building their own bikes.
The organization has a do-it-yourself philosophy: Although there is no charge for any repairs, or even bicycles, most visitors (except young children) are tasked with making their own repairs with the assistance of volunteer trainers.
Since its founding, Recycle Bicycle has distributed thousands of donated bikes to the Harrisburg community-averaging about 900 per year in the past decade. He’s known as “Mr. Bicycle,” around the Pennsylvania capital. He estimates that the organization repairs some 3,000 bikes a year.
Sitting in the organization’s shop space, he discusses the volunteerism and sense of service that were imprinted on him as a child by his parents. This led to a strong belief about fixing problems that one finds in the community.

5 . When the sand began kicking up and hitting our faces, I started to worry that maybe we had made a mistake.
That afternoon, my dad had stood on the deck(露台)of our home and laughed as our neighbors packed up their cars and headed inland. They left to spend the night in motels or at friends’ homes that were out of range of approaching summer storm.
Challenging the weather that threatened to damp our spirits, we lit a fire on the beach. Dad told jokes and we had a good time. When it was 6:30 p.m., all laughter disappeared. Our eyes were drawn to the sky. A tornado(龙卷风)was headed straight for us! In a flash, we were all on our feet. The wind started screaming and now we were running to the cottage. My mom stopped next to the front door. “Where can we go?” She shouted at my dad.
Most cottages on this part of Lake Michigan had been built without basements. Ours was no exception. The huge windows and the cottage itself wouldn’t offer safety from high wind.
“Follow me!” my dad yelled. We crawled(爬)beneath the deck, pressing ourselves against the foundation of the cottage. Between the deck supports, we watched the approaching storm in silent terror.
My dad shouted, “Hold on!” and something else I couldn’t hear over the screaming wind. I think he was praying. By the time it reached our cottage, it was nothing more than a strong wind. The rest of the storm lasted for an hour and then simply blew away.
“Next time, we’ll stay inland at Grandma’s. Okay?” my dad said.

8 . One August day this past summer, Richard Phibbs was taking photos of Hollywood's hottest couple, Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander. The next day,he was sprawling(趴)on the floor of a 6-by-6-foot animal-examination room at the Humane Society of New York(HSNY),photographing dozens of homeless animals for free.
For the past four years, Phibbs, famous for photographing celebrities, has photographed more than 360 rescued dogs, cats and other animals at the Humane Society in hopes of helping them find loving homes forever. Now 63 of those portraits are featured in a new book Rescue Me,detailing animal's miserable past and their new lives in New York City.
"I was longing lo take a picture that does something more than sell clothes or sell a career, " Phibbs tells The Post. "In fashion,we're trying to make up fantasy and dreams. When I'm at the Humane Society, I use photography to speak the truth. When people look into the eyes of that animal, the spirit of that being is there. "And his photos work. The animals whose portraits are taken by Phibbs see a much higher adoption rate than others at HSNY,thanks not only to the photographs themselves but also to their high share-rate on social media.
"Without doubt, "says Sandra Dereo, HSNY's executive director. "When we post one of his photos on Instagram or Adopt-a-Pet,it's like a flood. All of these people suddenly notice the animal. "
The photo shoots last anywhere from 5 to 45 minutes, and Phibbs will see dozens of animals in a single day. Each of his subjects is given time to adjust to his or her surroundings,so that they open up and let their personalities shine.
Whether it's a human or animal, I'm trying to get the subject to feel safe and to feel confident and comfortable with me, "the photographer says. "We're looking for that spirit, what makes them different. "While Phibbs may not spend hours with each animal, many of them still have a strong impact(影响)on him. "It's not uncommon for me to walk home, and weep the whole way. "

Ten years ago, I had an idea of extracting(提炼)preciously metals from used batteries. I was eager for the support of my father. A few years late, my father agreed with me. He decided offer me some funds to set up the company. In order to run the company well, I got on the fight down to Switzerland, on where I studied advanced production technology and management styles for three month. In my view, that was entirely likely for the company to achieve an annual profit approaching $3 million. With my hard work, I do achieve my aim. When asking why I had chosen the project, I said, “Recycling used batteries can save resources, protect the environment or benefit future generations.”
