4 . Four activities to take you out of your comfort zone, and increase your confidence.
Camping
Whether it’s at a professional campsite, or just in your back garden, taking a weekend away from technology and spending time with loved ones - or just you - can bring you a real sense of freedom. You’ll realize how little you really need.
Cooking Class
You could go with a friend to ease you in, or make new ‘foodie’ friends there - search for classes in your local area online. Or, if attending a class might be a few steps too far for you, you can still breathe some life into your tried and tested kitchen favorites by exploring new recipes.
Clubbercise
Group exercise classes can have many benefits, but personally I’ve always found the concept terrifying. But the great thing about Clubbercise classes is that you can enjoy them in the dark! There are no eyes on you if you miss a step, so you can completely let loose and have fun - who doesn’t feel better after dancing?
Rock Climbing
Rock climbing helps to develop your problem-solving skills as you navigate your way up the wall. Plus, rock climbing is quite an accessible activity. As “seeing the route” is less important than “feeling” your way up or keeping balance, it can be great for those with visual problems.
1. What are you advised to do if you want to go camping?A.Bring some friends with you. | B.Take some classes in advance. |
C.Leave your cellphone at home. | D.Explore new ways of cooking. |
A.From friends. | B.On the Internet. |
C.In the neighborhood. | D.Through organizations. |

D.Dancing with people in darkness. |

A.To report. | B.To educate. | C.To discuss. | D.To recommend. |
5 . At a farm off Narrow Lane near Lexington, Kentucky, US, old-fashioned houses look over the little red barn (畜舍). The farm is mostly empty now. Jim Mahan and his family, who lived there for generations, have moved to a different plot of land in northern Fayette County. As land is sold, houses go up where there once were fields.
But during the summer, the barn is filled with city kids who have come to enjoy the farm. They’re members of the Fayette County Livestock (FCL) Club, which showcases (展示) various skills. The barn is where they look after the animals. “A lot of Lexington kids don’t know anything about farm life,” said Adria Meier, 17, who has looked after goats and sheep for three years. “There is so much to learn.”
The dozen or so children who take care of their goats and sheep at the little red barn must take a six-hour class before they get an animal. They pay for their own animals but get special club programs, such as one that provides vet (兽医) care.
Mahan lets the group use the barn for free, and the kids spend up to three hours a day there during the summer. But as his land gets sold, he doesn’t know whether the club can continue. What makes the FCL Club special is that most of the kids can’t just walk out their doors and take care of their animals. Most are driven to the ban by their mothers, who usually hang around and chat as their kids feed and exercise the animals.
There are valuable lessons learned along the way. For instance, don’t cut wool off your goat when there is wind, and sheep are social animals and will cry loudly when separated. “Tending to animals helps teach us responsibility. Unlike learning to shoot an arrow, caring for an animal isn’t something you can simply abandon,” said Carly Playforth, 16, of Lexington.
1. What is the requirement for kids before they get animals?A.Attend a class. | B.Pay certain money. | C.Have varied skills. | D.Get special club programs. |
A.It offers services unconditionally. | B.It pays for their use of the barn. |
C.It lets mothers care for animals. | D.It allows mothers to push kids. |

A.Kids’ life on a sold farm. | B.Valuable lessons learned on the farm. |
C.A special club intended for Lexington kids. | D.A club activity of caring for farm animals. |
6 . In FAMILY LONDON by Jimi Famurewa, you’ll find an extensively researched edit of unforgettable London experiences capable of keeping all ages happy. Here are just a few for tasters ...
Lee Valley White Water Centre
One of the best toys left behind after the London 2012 Summer Olympics may be this giant, artificial riverbed. For adventurous over‑14s, the temptation to hop in a group raft will prove strong. There’s a thorough safety briefing before starting your white-water rafting adventure, and a kindly instructor will give orders throughout. Those after something easier (or under‑14s) can make a splash in the smaller Legacy Loop area. www. gowhitewater.co.uk.
Go Ape
A longtime favorite of expert treetop enthusiasts, this outdoor adventure company also provides a smart pick for families with a taste for daringness. In fact this Battersea branch is the highest in the country, making up for a lack of forest-wandering space with a tightly packed circuit of shaky walkways through trees. www.goape.co.uk.
Kew Gardens
With fantastic free parks littering the capital, a green space needs to be special to justify charging an entry fee. Kew — blessed with botanical gardens, a delicate Chinese pagoda and much, much more — offers value with free entry for under-4s. And there’s the Hive to explore the importance of British bees. www.kew.org.
V&A Museum
The Victoria & Albert Museum’s sprawling mass of artistically significant artefacts may be more suited to older children but its regular family experience sessions are classy affairs, run with patience, enthusiasm and an inclusive spirit. A working artist will take you and your kids through the creation of a themed work, ranging from decorative boxes for secrets to enjoyably messy clay-sculpting. www.vam.ac.uk.
