1 . More than 2. 6 million students in the United States were expected to study online through courses and tutoring fall, up from 1.9 million in 2003. according to an online research group.

Burck Smith, chief executive of Smarthinking, credits the rise in demand for online educational to services to several factors. These include an increase in the number of non-traditional students who don’t have a lot of time to campus resources, a more competitive educational landscape in which colleges and schools are trying harder to students with additional services and students greater familiarity with the Internet.

Terry H. Coye, director of tutorial and instructional programs at Gallaudet University, said his school turned to Smarthinking to increase its limited tutoring services for graduate students. With many of Gallaudte’s deaf and hard of hearing students accustomed to learning online, the service was a good fit, Coye said.

Founded in 1999, Sniarthinking employs more than 450 part-time instructors from around the world to offer round- clock tutoring. Though people might worry that a student could get too much help from someone outside the class-room, the company said it trains its tutors—who get an average of 15 hours of training—to guide students through prob-lems and not give away the answers.

“Long-term, there is no reason to believe online tutoring is no! going to grow as students go online and take classes,” said J. Mark Jackson, director of a market-research firm. Because it is additional service rather than a key offering, he said, it is unclear how large the market might grow.

4 . Honesty varies. First there’s self-honesty. Is what people see the real article or do you appear through smoke and mirrors? I find that if I try to be something I’m not, I feel unsure of myself and take out a part from my PBA(personal bank account). I love how singer Judy Garland put it, “Always be a first-class version(版本) of yourself, instead of a second-class version of somebody else.”

Then there’s honesty in our actions. Are you honest at school, with your parents, and with your boss? If you’ve ever been dishonest, I think we all have, try being honest, and notice how whole it makes you feel. Remember, you can’t do wrong and feel right. This story by Jeff is a good example of that:

In my second year of study, there were three kids in my math class who didn’t do well. I was really good at it. I would charge them three dollars for each test that I helped them pass. I’d write on a little piece of paper all the right answers, and hand them off.

At first I felt like I was making money, kind of a nice job. I wasn’t thinking about how it could hurt all of us. After a while I realized I shouldn’t do that anymore, because I wasn’t really helping them. They weren’t learning anything, and it would only get harder down the road. Cheating certainly wasn’t helping me.

It takes courage to be honest when people all around you are getting away with cheating on tests, lying to their parents, and stealing at work. But, remember, every act of honesty is a deposit into your PBA and will build strength.

1. The underlined part “appear through smoke and mirrors” in the first paragraph means ''________''.
A.to be honestB.to be clear
C.to be creativeD.to be unreal
2. Which of the following can best explain Judy Garland’s words?
A.Don’t copy others or you can’t be the first class.
B.Be your true self rather than follow others.
C.Make efforts to be the first instead of the second.
D.Don’t learn from others unless they’re excellent.
3. What does the author expect to show by Jeff’s story?
A.Honesty can be of great help.
B.A bad thing can be turned into a good one.
C.Helping others cheat can do good to nobody but yourself.
D.One should realize the wrong in his bad deeds.
4. In the last paragraph the author mainly wants to express ________.
A.one must be brave to be honest
B.it’s difficult to be honest when others are not
C.one should be honest when making a deposit
D.honesty in one’s actions can help him in the future

5 . The world’s first “Sky Pool” has been uncoated(曝光)-and it’ll give anyone a touch of dizziness(眩晕), unless he or she is not bothered by heights.

Situated in the capital’s new riverside district beside Battersea Power Station, the glass pool, hanging 10 storeys, or 110 feet up as a bridge between two apartment buildings, is 25m long, 5m wide and 3m deep with a water depth of 1. 2m. 6 . For a long time in history, numerous scholars have asked the question:what is beauty? As designers update the latest fashions and artists create their masterpieces, what is considered beautiful changes at an alarming pace.Fifty years ago,the full-figured American actress Marilyn Monroe was a symbol of the American aesthetic(美学的)value; today, many Hollywood actresses different in appearance from Marilyns have taken her taken per place. However, aesthetic values not only differ from generation to generation, but do so along cultural lines as well.Often, what is   considered hating one civilization is just the aesthetic appeal in another.Thus it is difficult to give an absolute definition of beauty.

As fundamental physicists,my colleagues and I like to believe that we are involved in a search for a beauty that affects definition. The beauty that we search for is not what is set up through the work of people and subject to the tastes, but rather what has been laid down by nature Physics allows its students to look past outer appearance, into a deeper beauty. As a human being,I am attracted by the visual appeal of a wave crashing on the beach. As a physicist, however I am able to see the deeper beauty of the physical laws that govern such a phenomenon.

In truth, since Albert Einstein put forward the idea that there might be one main physical theory that governs the universe, aesthetics, have become a driving force in modern physics.Einstein and other later physicists have discovered that:Nature,as its most fundamental level,is beautifully constructed. The extraordinary simplicity of the laws that govern the universes is really breathtaking. As Einstein said, it would seem more likely that we should find ourselves living in a "disorderly world,in no way apprehensible through thinking".Yet we are now closer than ever to a full understanding of the universe's beautiful clockwork. As new discoveries and technologies allow us to examine the physical world on deeper and deeper levels, we find that the beauty itself becomes much deeper.

1. The reference to" Marilyn Monroe" in paragraph 2 mainly serves to      .
A.show there is no fixed definition of aesthetics
B.provide an example of today's beauty standards
C.compare traditions of the East to the west
D.discuss her abilities as an actress
2. When appreciating a wave crashing on the beach,a physicist sees the beauty of      .
A.the visual attractionB.the powerful sounds
C.the lovely creaturesD.the physical laws behind
3. Why are Albert Einstein's words mentioned in paragraph 3 ?
A.To detail the functions of physical laws.
B.To highlight the range of Einstein's influence.
C.To stress the very simplicity of the laws of the universe
D.To show that Einstein doubted the beauty of physics.
4. the passage is mainly to      .
A.emphasize the influence of physics
B.present a special way of seeing beauty
C.discuss the awareness of across-culture
D.argue the traditional ideas on value

2    The first step in saving money is to know how much you’re spending. For one month, keep a record of everything you spend money on.Once you have your data, organize these numbers by category (类别) and get the total amount for each.

You can make a budget (预算). Now that you have a good idea of how much you spend in a month, what can you do now?     3     To plan your spending, you can build a budget. In this way, you can limit over-spending and make sure that you put money away for unexpected situations.

Some short-term goals include starting a fund to cover 6 months to a year of living costs and saving money for a vacation. Long-term saving goals are often several years or even decades away and can include saving for retirement and putting money away for a child’s college education.

Make saving money easier with automatic transfers (自动转帐). Automatic transfers to your savings account are very helpful.     5    By moving money out of your checking account, you’ll be less likely to spend money you plan to use for savings.

8 . Young women who take part in beauty contests (比赛) are helping to keep alive an outdated opinion of women that a woman’s most important value is how she looks.
Women have been working very hard through the years to change their image. They have been trying to prove that the value of a woman does not lie only in her beauty. The world is just beginning to recognize that women are as smart, wise and strong in personality as men are, and that there are qualities more important than looks when judging people. When women take part in beauty contests for top prizes, they encourage people to value them for their beauty alone. It is unfair to say that beauty alone determines one’s worth.
Beauty contests not only encourage spectators (观众) to judge women by their appearance, but they encourage this idea in the contestants as well. These young women spend months losing weight to be the “right” size and learning how to dress, wear makeup, and walk just right so that some judges will consider them beautiful. I think it’s great for a woman to feel good about her appearance, but looks shouldn’t be sought after in an extreme or unreasonable way. There are too many other, more important, things in a young woman’s life: learning, developing friendships and preparing for their future work and perhaps a family.
As long as there are beauty contests, women won’t be fully recognized as well-rounded human beings.
1. According to the text, women have tried to change their image by      .
A.proving they are as good as men
B.paying attention to their clothes
C.winning more beauty contests
D.encouraging people to value their beauty
2. What do women usually do in preparation for beauty contests?
A.Learn about their personality.
B.Do everything for their bodies.
C.Choose the right size dresses.
D.Develop friendship with spectators.
3. What can we infer from the text?
A.Looks determine everything.
B.Wisdom carries much weight.
C.Spectators should have their voices heard.
D.Qualities other than looks are more important.
4. According to the author, beauty contests are      .
A.disrespectful to women
B.unpleasant to contestants
C.necessary for modern society
D.helpful in improving women’s image

9 . Not many people can say that they have lived in two totally different environments, and technically neither can I. I have lived in the same house in the same Connecticut town my whole life, but a lot of my childhood and teenage years have been spent visiting my family in New York City.

Wethersfield is a typical New England town, a small close community (社区) where almost everyone knows your name. My friends all go to the same high school and my parents are friendly with my friends’ parents. Most of my friends don’t realize what life is like outside this little town. Maybe every so often a few take a day trip to Manhattan or Boston, but none really knows what it’s like to live in an urban environment.

My parents are both from New York City and since they have siblings and friends who still live there, we visit a lot. From an early age I have been exposed to urban life. Jeff, one of my cousins, lives with his mother in a one-bedroom apartment in Brooklyn. He has never had his own room and has always been very much on his own. I don’t think any of my friends could understand how someone could live like that.

When I go to the city I see things I would never see in my hometown. I see poverty and people struggling to make a living. I observe a whole different pace; there, you’re just one guy living with millions of others who will never know your name.

I feel blessed to have experienced the lifestyles of two completely different places. I am grateful for the opportunities I have had. I feel that living in Wethersfield has given me a solid base in forming my character and the ability to deal in a close-knit society. On the other hand, my time spent in New York has exposed me to diverse cultural experiences. I feel that I would be comfortable in any environment and could make the best of any situation.

1. According to the author, most of his friends in the town _____.
A.have never experienced city life
B.can only understand the rural life
C.prefer the small close community
D.know little about the real city life
2. The underlined word “siblings” in paragraph 3 means _____.
A.schoolmatesB.colleagues
C.relativesD.parents
3. The author’s life in New York has brought him _____.
A.his present characterB.the social ability
C.the comfort of city lifeD.diverse cultural experiences
4. What could be the best title for the passage?
A.A Small Town and a Big City
B.A Man of Two Different Worlds
C.Experience Various Environments
D.Make the Best of Diverse Cultures

10 . Internet use appears to cause a decline in psychological well-being(安康), according to research at Carnegie Mellon University.
Even people who spent just a few hours a week on the Internet experienced more depression and loneliness than those who logged on less frequently, the two-year study showed. And it wasn’t that people who were already feeling bad spent more time on the Internet, but that using the Net actually appeared to cause the bad feeling.
Researchers are puzzling over the results, which were completely contrary to their expectations. They expected that the net would prove socially healthier than television, since the Net allows users to choose their information and to communicate with others.
The fact that Internet use reduces time available for family and friends may account for the drop in well-being, researchers suggested. Faceless, bodiless “virtual”(虚拟的)communication may be less psychologically satisfying than actual conversation, and the relationship formed through it may be shallower. Another possibility is that exposure to the wider world via the Net makes users less satisfied with their lives.
“But it’s important to remember this is not about the technology per se; it’s about how it is used,” says psychologist Christine Riley of Intel, one of the study’s sponsors. “It really points to the need for considering social effects in terms of how you design applications and services for technology.”
1. The best title for this passage would be ________.
A.Internet may Cause Depression
B.The Dark Side of Internet
C.How to Use Technology Properly
D.The Importance of Psychological Well-being
2. Internet use may cause a decline in psychological well-being because ________.
A.people who were already feeling bad spend more time on the Internet
B.Internet users thought the world was wider than it really was
C.people were too eager to turn the “virtual” communication into reality
D.people have less time for actual communication with their family and friends
3. What does the underlined Latin word “per se” (in Para. 5) mean?
