文章大意:这是一篇说明文,文章通过介绍一本书讲述了英格兰著名足球运动员托尼·亚当斯在退役后的慈善行动。

1 . Many footballers struggle when they leave the beautiful game for retirement in their mid-thirties, with stories that are sad or even terrible. However, in his new book Kicking On! Tony Rickson reveals the footballers who have achieved success after retirement, whether it’s by setting up charities, helping others cope, creating multi-million-pound businesses or going into media, politics or back into the football world.

Tony Adams, a former footballer, set up a charitable foundation more than 20 years ago called Sporting Chance and said it’s one of his greatest achievements. He’s wrong. Despite all the cups he won while captaining Arsenal during a highly successful 22-year career at his only club, and all the times he played for England, it is his greatest achievement. Not just one of them.

As Adams admits in his memorable book, Addicted, he suffered from alcoholism and drug abuse while still a professional footballer. Setting up Sporting Chance was his response, and ever since it’s treated and supported sports professionals suffering from drink or drug problems. The charity’s offer is: “We understand that it takes courage to ask for help, either during or following a career in sport, so when you’re ready to reach out, we’re ready for you.”

Since retiring from playing in 2002, Adams, who has a statue in his honor outside the Arsenal ground, has managed and coached in several countries alongside his charity work. He told The Sun: “What happened in my life with alcohol makes me feel so sad but also grateful that I found a way out of it. I’ve had highs and lows, in and out of football, given up playing and gone into coaching and management. I’ve not had a drink through any of it. My self-esteem (自尊) has come back and I am all right.”

The self-assessment as “all right” also applied to his 2022 appearance in TV’s Strictly Come Dancing, when Adams showed an admirable ability to laugh at himself.

1. What is Adams’ greatest achievement according to Rickson?
A.Setting up Sporting Chance.B.Captaining the team Arsenal.
C.Playing for England all his life.D.Writing his bestseller Addicted.
2. What problem did Adams have as a professional footballer?
A.Losing his position on the team.B.Lack of courage to seek advice.
C.Addiction to alcohol and drugs.D.Tense relations with teammates.
3. What can we infer about Adams from Paragraph 4?
A.Adams worked as a coach immediately he retired.
B.Charity work made Adams recognized in his circle.
C.Adams began his football career at the age of 22.
D.Arsenal thinks highly of Adams’ contribution to it.
4. What is the text?
A.A news report.B.A biography.
C.An introduction to a book.D.An entry of a diary.

5 . It’s no secret that reading good news feels a lot better than reading bad news. Like, would you rather bite into a lemon, or sip on a fresh glass of lemonade?

1    The world is full of problems and conflicts and we need to stay informed and alert (警觉的) to what’s going on around us. While reading traditional, more negative news is important, consuming good news is also part of staying informed.     2    And it also brings meaningful benefits, like reduced stress and anxiety, higher rates of engagement, community building skills, and inspiration for creating a better world. Plus, knowing what to look for in the good news landscape is a key part of improving our media literacy skills and being thoughtful news consumers.

In fact, good news, known as solutions journalism, is becoming more popular, as publishers and news stations discover the benefits of sharing positive stories. Good Good Good is one of them.     3     A team of reporters and editors there work daily to deliver stories that make readers feel hopeful and equipped to do more good with possible solutions.

“If it bleeds, it leads.” has long been a saying used in the media to describe how news stories about violence, death and destruction draw readers’ attention.       4     The thing is, however, there’s also good stuff out there—the delightful and kind parts of humanity. “Beautiful stories are happening worldwide.    5    When you do find them, the world can suddenly feel like a very different place. Good news is a vital part of how we learn about the world and solving the world’s problems.” Hervey, one of Good Good Good’s editors said.

A.Share good news with people around you.
B.It’s just that we don’t hear as much about them.
C.But the “bad news” has its place in the world.
D.It provides a more balanced view of the world.
E.And so, negative news stories are everywhere on news media.
F.Heartwarming stories make you cry and feel good.
G.The news media company is devoted to providing good news intentionally.
文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。作者通过论述书籍作为礼物的价值和意义,提出了自己的观点,即书籍可以成为有意义的礼物。

6 . Grace Hemingway gifted her son, Earnest, a copy of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s epic poem Hiawatha on his sixth birthday. While it’s hard to say how much her choice of gift influenced Earnest Hemingway at the time, he grew up to become one of the most famous writers in history.

Books can make for charming gifts. Giving a book as a gift to someone is much more than a simple exchange of goods.

When giving books, think about your recipients’ (接受者) favorite. It is worth the time to try and find a rare copy, like first editions or signed copies. They’ll be delighted by the effort. Are your friends stuck in a dullness and in need of some motivation? You can gift them a book that offers inspiration. Also, not mainstream yet useful guides related to their career are helpful.

A book when received as a gift has meaning to the recipient by itself if you’ve put some thought into it. An inscription (题词) adds to the appeal of your gift by making it more individualized. Without an inscription, although still meaningful, the book is just a book indistinguishable from hundreds of thousands of copies out there. A case for not penning down an inscription is that it makes it easier for them to pass it on to someone else if they don’t like the book.

Wondering if you should give your recipient a hardcover or a paperback? There is no universal preference among readers. Some like the paperbacks because of the convenience, easy to carry around and travel with. But many people, including me, prefer hardcovers because they’re more traditional and last much longer. A study designed to find a relation between the weight of wine bottles and their prices found that in most cases the weight of a wine bottle related positively with the price. The weight helped consumers perceive the wine as better.

In a word, books can make for memorable gifts. A good book gifted thoughtfully will create a pleasant memory.

1. Why is Earnest Hemingway mentioned in the first paragraph?
A.To share a book.B.To present a fact.
C.To introduce the topic.D.To make a comparison.
2. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A.Who the gift should be given.B.How a book should be presented.
C.Where a proper book can be found.D.What kinds of books can be chosen as gifts.
3. Why is an inscription advised to be included in a gifted book?
A.To make the book more personal.
B.To record the giver’s reading experience.
C.To make the content of the book more appealing.
D.To allow the book to be more pleasing to the eye.
4. What does the author want to convey when it comes to the study about wine bottles?
A.Good wine is all in heavier bottles.
B.The weight of a book determines its price.
C.A hardcover book is often valued more as a gift.
D.The price of wine depends on the quality of its bottle.

文章大意:这是一篇夹叙夹议文。作者通过自己的亲身感受,比较了电子书和纸质书的不同,展现了纸质书的优势,引导青少年阅读纸质书。

7 . One Saturday last November, I stepped into my local library. I was about to read a book when I heard an elderly man speak to a lady. “This library will soon become a cafe. Everyone is reading with electronic devices,” he said. Hearing this, I wanted to shout, “I still read library books!” But my words stuck in my throat and I found teenagers around me were talking to friends or staring at their phones.

Reading online feels robotic to me. It’s like I stare at a screen and click “next” for the following page to appear until the very end of the e-book, and at the end of all of that, I just think, “That’s it?” But when I read a printed book, it’s like I’m holding on to the characters. I can imagine the plot better, as I can picture the scenes of each moment in my head with more accuracy and imagination.

Besides, some online books miss components that are in the printed novels. For instance, the physical copy of a fantasy novel I have read contains a map, but the e-book version does not. That is an injustice to e-book users; after reading and understanding the map, the story made a lot more sense for me, in terms of the setting and plot.

And personally, physically turning to the next page is better than clicking “next”. When reading online, I sometimes worry that I click “next” too quickly. It feels more like a race; I want to finish it because the pages just keep making that “flipping” sound and I wonder how long the book really is.

Some printed books have a special smell that makes the novel feel special to me. It’s hard to describe but I’m sure I’m not the only one that thinks so. I know I cannot convince every teen to switch from the digital book to the printed one, but maybe my writing about the difference will at least get some of them to think about it.

1. Why will the library be replaced by a cafe?
A.Few people head for it.B.It lacks good management.
C.Few people read its books.D.It holds little attraction for the youth.
2. Why does the author prefer printed books according to paragraph 2?
A.They include additional contents.B.They provide a strong connection to the characters.
C.They have a special pleasant smell.D.They can improve readers’ imagination.
3. What is the author’s purpose of writing this text?
A.To inspire teenagers’ interest in reading.B.To show advantages of printed books.
C.To reduce the impact of electronic devices.D.To encourage teens to change the reading medium.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了共同阅读的好处。

8 . It’s summer. You’re on your favorite beach towel, a friend beside you. You’re both absorbed in books, occasionally taking some water. But what happens when it’s time to head home? Will you carry on reading together later? Generally speaking, reading tends to be seen as an individual pastime.    1     However, the benefits of sharing the experience are numerous and worth sticking with throughout the year

2    For example, you don’t have to brainstorm to organize a conversation, because you both have a book in your hands. You can get lost in your book without worrying about seeming rude by not keeping up a constant stream of chatter. As you both enter the same state, your blood pressure will go down, muscle tension will ease, and your worries will fade away. All these put you at ease.    3    A quiet comer of the playground, a blanket spread out on the grass in the garden, or any calm space where you feel relaxed will do.

Spending time together reading can strengthen friendships. As you tum the pages, you might discover interesting stories to share with each other. Sometimes, you’ll come across more serious themes, such as losing a love done or a cherished pet, or facing anyone of life’s many challenges.    4

Reading fiction has been shown to enhance empathy (共情), which is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. As you know, novels allow us to live countless experiences through their characters.    5

A.They will result in heightened sensitivity.
B.Reading with others is comforting in many ways.
C.Reading can surely bring the joy of relaxation to people.
D.Besides, you don’t need to find a specific place to get into this zone.
E.So it might seem unusual to pullout a novel in the company of others.
F.Reading in pair may help you and your friend stay more committed to reading.
G.Discussing these themes can help deepen the bond between you and your friend.
