1 . I still clearly remember that day. I was on the side of the road for close to four hours with my big Jeep. I put signs in the windows that said, “NEED A JACK(千斤顶)”.
Right as I was about to give up, a truck stopped and a man got off. He sized up the situation and went back to take a jack. After about two hours, we finished the job with sweats. We were both dirty. His wife produced a large water jug for us to wash our hands in.
I tried to put $20 in the man’s hand, but he wouldn’t take it, so instead I went up and gave it to his wife as quietly as I could. I thanked them up one side and down the other. I asked the little girl, their daughter, where they lived, thinking maybe I’d send them a gift. She said they lived in Mexico. They were in Oregon now so Mommy and Daddy could pick cherries for the next few weeks. After that, they were going to pick peaches, and then go back home.
After I said my goodbyes and started walking back to the Jeep, the girl called out and asked if I’d had lunch. When I told her no, she ran up and handed me a tamale(玉米粽子). I thanked them again and walked back to my car. When I opened the tamale, what did I find inside? My $20 bill! I ran to the van and the guy rolled down his window. He saw the $20 in my hand, started shaking his head smiling, and with what looked like great concentration said in English: “Today you, tomorrow me.” Then he rolled up his window and drove away, with his daughter waving to me from the back.
This family, working on a seasonal basis where time is money, took a couple of hours to help a stranger while others passed by quietly.
Since then I’ve helped many people like the Mexican family. I didn’t accept money. But every time I was able to help, I felt as if I was putting something in the bank.

D.Because the author thought the man’s wife would take it.
3. The Mexican man helped the author because he tended to think that ___________.
A.it was completely wrong for others to pass by quietly
B.it was quite easy to help the author mend the jeep
C.it was possible that everyone might get into trouble

2 . Outside our hotel in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, a seemingly ancient woman waited beside the door with her hand outstretched. Every day I put my hand in hers as our eyes met. She never failed to return my smile, my grasp, and my greeting.
On the last day of our visit, I found myself alone on a busy corner across the street from our hotel. Bicycles and motorbikes rushed in front of me. As I hesitated on the sidewalk, I felt a hand on my elbow and looked down to see the smile of my small beggar friend looking up at me. She nodded her head toward the street, indicating that she would take me across. Together, we moved slowly into the chaos.
Then we moved on toward the sidewalk, where she pulled my face down to hers, kissed me on both cheeks, and then left, still smiling and waving back to me.
Traveling in poorer nations, I have witnessed a variety of ways to deal with beggars. The most common response of tourists faced with the poverty-stricken is to ignore them and focus their eyes elsewhere. I have seen people push away an outstretched hand in angry annoyance. A few may drop a few coins into the hand in a hurry, hoping that other ragged pursuers won’t immediately appear on the scene.
For many reasons, giving money is not the best response to an outstretched hand. Many world travelers have discovered that the greatest gift they can give is their time and respect. Everyone needs recognition, to be seen as worthy of being known, to feel appreciated and loved. And I believe that everyone is worthy and worth knowing.
1. The woman beggars helped the author go across the busy street because __________.
A.the author gave her material assistance
B.the author treated her kindly and friendly

A.equalB.superiorC.lowerD.valuable
3. In common cases, people will do the following things to the beggars EXCEPT for ________.
A.pretending to see nothing
B.handing out some money
C.refusing them angrily
D.greeting them normally
4. According to the author, the most important things beggars really need are _________.
A.mercy and pityB.money and food
C.smile and greetingD.attention and respect
5. The purpose of the passage is to _________.
A.show how poor the beggars are in Vietnam
B.offer some advice on dealing with begging
C.express what we should offer the beggars
D.describe an experience with a beggar

4 . It is common and usual to see people ____ when they face challenges in their life. We all pass in different life problems and challenges. No one is free of life problems. Only a dead man faces no problem. As long as you are alive, challenges are everywhere.
How do you face problems and challenges in your life? Problems and challenges are the building blocks of your personality. They make you who you are. Besides, whether what happened in your life builds or destructs you depends on how you look at it. If you take your problems as troubles, they will be troubles and may cause destruction. If you take them as constructive tools, you are going to be built up on them.

Just cool yourself to think in a different direction. Think in a positive way. Every problem has its own good as well as bad sides. Focus on the good one. Look at the bright side.
Besides, there is always a good person, perhaps your mom or dad, or one of your friends, right beside you who can turn everything into your best if you are willing to turn to them. Her daughter had been very kind, of course, and had immediately agreed to pick her up and drive her to the station, but Mrs. Robson hated to admit that she needed help. Since her husband had died ten years before, she had always been proud of her independence. She had continued to live in their little house, alone.
On this evening, however, she was standing at her living-room window, staring out at the SOLD notice in the small front garden. Her feelings were mixed. Of course, she was sad at the thought of leaving the house, as it was full of so many memories. But at the same time she was looking forward to spending her last years near the sea, back in the little seaside town where she had been born. With the money from the sale of the house, she had bought a little apartment there. She turned from the living room window, and looked round at the walls. There was a small fish tank, with two goldfish in it. 7 . Sometimes you’ll hear people say that you can’t love others until you love yourself. Sometimes you’ll hear people say that you can’t expect someone else to love you until you love yourself. Either way, you’ve got to love yourself first and this can be tricky. Sure we all know that we’re the apple of our parent’s eyes, and that our Grandmas think we’re great talents and our Uncle Roberts think that we will go to the Olympics. But sometimes it’s a lot harder to think such nice thoughts about ourselves. If you find that believing in yourself is a challenge. It is time you built a positive self-image and learn to love yourself.
Self-image is your own mind’s picture of yourself. This image includes the way you look, the way you act, the way you talk and the way you think. Interestingly, our self-images are often quite different from the images others hold about us. Unfortunately, most of these images are more negative than they should be. Thus changing the way you think about yourself is the key to changing your self-image and your whole world.
The best way to defeat a passive self-image is to step back and decide to stress your successes. That is, make a list of you need to, but write down all of the great things you do every day. Don’t allow doubts to occur in it.
It very well might be that you are experiencing a negative self-image because you can’t move past one flaw or weakness that you see about yourself. Well, roll up your sleeves and make a change of it as your primary task. If you think you’re silly because you aren’t good at math, find a tutor. If you think you’re weak because you can’t run a mile, get to the track and practice. If you think you’re dull because you think it doesn’t mean it’s true.
The best way to get rid of a negative self-image is to realize that your image is far from objective, and to actively convince yourself of your positive qualities. Changing the way you think and working on those you need to improve will go a long way towards promoting a positive self-image. When you can pat(拍)yourself on the back, you’ll know you’re well on your way. Good luck!
1. You need to build a positive self-image when you             .
A.dare to challenge yourselfB.feel it hard to change yourself
C.are unconfident about yourselfD.have a high opinion of yourself
2. How should you change your self-image according to the passage?
A.To keep a different image of others.B.To accept your weaknesses.
C.To understand your own world.D.To change the way you think.
3. What is the passage mainly about?
A.How to prepare for your success.B.How to face challenges in your life.
C.How to build a positive self-image.D.How to develop your good qualities.

8 . How to improve our life? Many people think that they have to accept whatever life throws at them. They’ll say, "This is my destiny(命运).I cannot change it."
Of course not! You don’t have to suffer needlessly. Your life depends on you, not on any other external(外部的)factor.
I know a woman who says she just accepts what life gives her because she has done everything she can to improve it. Guess what her lifestyle is? She wakes up in the morning, goes to work, comes back home, relaxes, chats with people, watches TV, and then goes to sleep. Next day, the same routine cycle follows.
Huh! Is this what she calls "doing her best"? She believes she has tried her best and just accepts it in her heart that this is the life that has been intended for her and that her luck can only change if God wills it. She hasn’t realized that we have to do our share of making the effort to live the life of our dreams.
Remember that you harvest what you sow. You have to get off the sofa, get your eyes off the TV screen, get your hands off the phone(unless it contributes to your success),and get your mind and body to work! Don’t expect your luck to change, unless you do something about it. If something goes wrong, don’t just regard it as a temporary setback; instead, learn your lesson, make the most of the situation, and do something to solve the problem. It’s not enough to think positively; you also have to act positively.
If someone’s life is in trouble, do you just hope and pray that things will turn out fine? Of course not! You get to do anything you can to save the person. So it is with your own life. It is not enough to hope for the best, but you have to do your best. In other words, don’t just stand(or sit)there, do something to improve your life.
1. According to the woman mentioned in Para. 3, her life_________________.
A.doesn’t need improvingB.couldn’t be improved
C.will be better some dayD.will be worse in the future
2. What does the author think of the woman’s life?
A.PositiveB.PassiveC.ColorfulD.Disturbing
3. Which of the following statements is the author’s opinion?
A.Your temporary problem is not discouraging.
B.Your luck can be changed by your own efforts.
C.You can only achieve success when God wills it.
D.You should treat yourself in the way you treat friends.
4. In Para. 5, the author emphasized the importance of _______________.
A.positive thinkingB.positive action
C.hope for the bestD.intention to succeed
5. The text is mainly written to advise you to _________________.
A.understand yourselfB.improve your life
C.believe in yourselfD.change your normal way

10 . Dinner was almost ready when the killing happened. When Don Wise walked into the living room of his home, his ten-year-old son,Mike, and a 12-year-old friend were sitting in front of a large-screen television set. They were playing a video game they had rented(租赁), called Golden eye 007,one of the top-selling titles of 2007.
Standing behind the boys,Wise saw that one boy pushed the button and shot the character in the face.Blood splattered(喷溅)the lab coat of the character as he circled and fell.“You’re down!”the boy said, laughing.
Frightened by the child’s obvious fun,Wise ordered the boys to turn the game off.“This game is terrible.“he said seriously.“I don’t want you to play with this any more.”
Video games have become pervasive form of entertainment since the 1990s.Today about 69 percent of American families own or rent video and computer games. Most are harmless entertainment, but in far too many of the most popular ones, kids are acting out realistic violent experiences on their TV and computer screens.“These are not just games any more,”says Rick Dyer, president of the San Diego-based Virtual Image Productions.“These are learning machines. We’re teaching kids in the most incredible way what it’s like to pull the trigger(扳机).The focus is on the thrill, enjoyment and reward. What they’re not realizing are the real-life results.“
Such video games introduce kids to a fantasy world that features amazingly lifelike characters, detailed images of brutality(野蛮)。 Unlike movies and television, where you watch the violence, the video game lets you feel the sensation(感觉) of taking violent actions. When you’re into the game, you’re in the game.
“The technology is becoming more engaging(吸引人的) for kids,”says David Walsh, president of the National Institute on Media and the Family(NIMF),a watchdog group in Minneapolis,“and a part of the games features anti-social themes of violence, sex and rude language.Unfortunately,it’s a part that seems particularly popular with kids between ages 8 to15.”
