文章大意:这是一篇说明文,文章主要介绍了歌曲时间通常在三分钟的原因,以及唱片的发展史。

2 . No matter where you usually hear today’s top hits, you’ve probably noticed that they tend to be around three minutes long.

As Vox explains, the custom dates back to the early 20th century, when shellac (虫胶) records first appeared in the market. The rates at which these records spun varied, but 78 revolutions (旋转) per minute (RPM) quickly became the norm. The most popular record sizes were 10 inches which could hold about three minutes of music per side, and 12 inches which held roughly four to five minutes per side. To get radio stations to broadcast their music and get people to buy it, musicians pretty much had to accommodate those time limits.

As music technology developed over the years, from records to cassette tapes to CDs, three minutes didn’t fall out of fashion. According to Classic FM, this was partly because radio stations could fit more commercials into a program if the songs stayed relatively short. It’s also likely that pop music listeners just preferred briefness; after all, it’s what the last several decades had taught them to expect. As Thomas Tierney said, “It’s implanted in our DNA.”

Today, many tracks come in under three minutes long. Shorter attention spans and social media’s influence might explain the trend toward briefness, but it’s not the only factor: The reward model matters, too. “Instead of getting paid by physical sales, you’re getting paid in a stream, which only counts if someone listens to 30 seconds of a song,” songwriter Charlie Harding told The Verge. “It actually makes sense if you can have more songs streamed at a time, which means that you want to pack your album full of much shorter songs.”

In other words, success is now less about sales but more about the number of streams. Today’s pop stars are making music that reflects the shift—not unlike how 20th-century musicians learned to work within the original three-minute limits.

2. What did relatively short songs mean to radio stations?

3. Which is more important for a modern pop song according to the text?

4 . Music is good for the health. And drumming may be best of all. As well as being physically demanding, it requires people to adjust their limbs and to react to outside stimuli, such as what the rest of the band is up to. It is particularly helpful for children who have emotional and behavioral difficulties.

Researchers at the Clem Burke Drumming Project an organization named after Blondie’s drummer, who was one of its founders have shown that teaching such children to drum helps them to control their reactions more generally, to focus more effectively on tasks they are given, and to communicate better with other people.

The project’s latest work, led by Cahart of King’s College, London, goes a step further. It looks at the neurological (神经系统的) changes which accompany these shifts.

Ms. Cahart and her colleagues found36 autistic(自闭症)teenagers and divided them into two groups. One had drum lessons twice a week for eight weeks. The others did not. At the beginning and end of the project everyone was asked to stay still for 45 minutes in a machine to see how the activity of their brains had changed. Their behaviour was also recorded.

As expected, most of the drumming group showed positive behavioral changes. And these were indeed reflected in their brains. The machine scans showed that several groups of connectivity between parts of those brains had strengthened during the experiment. In particular, two regions involved in attention control, formed strong links, respectively, with places associated with introspection (内省) and with areas involved in understanding facial expressions.

These changes in the brain thus nicely match the changes in behaviour which learning to drum brings. Not a surprise, perhaps. But a confirmation of drumming’s power to heal.

1. Which is not the benefit of drumming for children who have emotional and behavioural difficulties?

3. What are the main changes in the brain caused by drumming?
A.Places associated with introspection is more active.

6 . In modern society, dance is widely recognized as a form of entertainment. Many people enjoy dancing for fun or watching their favorite artists dance on stage or screen. It can also be a form of sport.     1     In addition to these obvious functions, however, there are other more complex roles dance can play in a society.

2     A kind of dance called the minuet is a good example. The minuet (小步舞) originated in France and became popular in Britain, where upper-class women about to make their entrance into adult society by attending their first dance were strictly trained for their first minuet. They usually danced it before a crowd of people who would critically observe their movements and behavior.

Dance has also been used to make sure that adults follow the rules. An example comes from a research conducted in the mid- 1900s on dances performed after hunts by the Mbuti Pygmies, a group living in parts of Central Africa.     3     For example, an opportunity to catch an animal was missed because someone neglected to perform their role of hitting the ground to drive the animal towards the hunters. Later, a dancer would act out the event to show the wrong action and perhaps embarrass that person.

In some cultures, dance can be a way of displaying power. For instance, there is another report from the mid-1900s describing how the Maring people of New Guinea would hold dances to show their military strength. Through the dances, a group’s size and strength would become obvious to potential opponents.     4

The roles of dance discussed here have one shared effect.     5     Dance is not just an artistic expression but a way for groups to strengthen their shared identity.

A.This could help avoid a fight.
B.They unite members of a group.
C.The roots can be traced to the late 1700s.
D.There are dance competitions of various types.
E.Suppose something had gone wrong in the hunt.
F.They acted out scenes and displayed their own traditions.
G.Sometimes dance serves to help teach social rules to young members.
