4 . Have you seen the movie The Shawshank Redemption? If so, you might be moved by Andy, who tries to earn freedom by escaping the hopeless prison. It is hard to imagine what life would be like in prison. However, Old Melbourne Gaol gives us such a chance. It is a museum in Melbourne, which served as prison between 1842 and 1929.

We experienced being prisoners in the prison. All of us were asked to put down our belongings and then we were checked. We couldn’t hide anything. After a while, we were given cards with fake names and charges. We read the information loudly and then the “police” explained it in a funny way. For example, a gentleman’s charge was carrying an illegal weapon, which was actually just an umbrella.

Soon we were divided into groups and went to different rooms in the prison. The light was off inside. We could not see anything. All we could hear was our breath. It was the longest five minutes of my life. I was in a tiny room with a number of strangers. I could feel the same depression as the prisoners. The police finally opened the door and led us to the activity area. We relaxed in the sunlight and decided to behave ourselves in the future.

I think Australian museums are quite interesting. They not only add modern technology to historical relics, but also hold various activities for visitors.

1. Why did the writer mention the movie in the first paragraph?
A.To introduce the story of the movie.
B.To tell readers about the main character Andy.
C.To introduce her trip to a special museum.
D.To tell readers about different museums in Melbourne.
2. How did the visitors experience being prisoners?
A.By taking few things with them.
B.By using different new names.
C.By carrying umbrellas as weapons.
D.By staying in dark rooms for five minutes.
3. How did the visitors feel as prisoners?
A.Hopeless.
B.Encouraged.
C.Relaxed.
D.Funny.
4. After going out of the rooms, the visitors decided to                 .
A.be a policeman
B.be a well-behaved person
C.change their names
D.do more for prisoners

5 . My 9-year-old daughter and I were flying from our home in Carolina to spend a week with my husband in Florida. We were excited about the trip because we hadn’t seen him for five months, and my daughter missed her dad terribly.

As usual on the Charlotte-to-Miami flight, the plane was totally full. Because we did not get our boarding passes until we arrived at the gate, Kallie and I could not get seats together and were separated by the aisle (过道). I asked two passengers in my row if they would exchange places with Kallie and me so that we could be together. They refused, saying they thought they should stay in their own seats. Meanwhile, a mother and her three children were in a panic several rows ahead of us. There had been a mistake in their boarding passes, and therefore the whole family had been split up. The passengers in her row also refused to move elsewhere. She was very concerned about the younger boy sitting with strangers. She was in tears, yet nobody offered to help her. There were a troop of Boy Scouts (童子军) on board. Suddenly the Scout leader stood up and said, “Ma’am, I think we can help you.” He then spent five minutes rearranging his group so that enough space was left for the family. The boys followed his directions cheerfully and without complaint, and the mother’s relief was obvious.

Kallie, however, was beginning to worry at the thought of not being next to me. I told her that there wasn’t anything I could do. Amazingly, the man sitting next to the Scoutmaster, turned around to me and asked, “Would you and your daughter like our seats?” referring to himself and the Scoutmaster. We traded seats and continued our trip, very much relieved to be together and watch the scenery from Kallie’s window seat.

1. What made Kallie excited?
A.Travelling to Florida for the first time.B.Seeing her father very soon.
C.Enjoying the beautiful scenery.D.Having fun with other kids.
2. We can know that the author asked to exchange seats with others to ________.
A.keep herself away from dangerB.stop her daughter from crying
C.make herself less nervousD.sit together with her daughter
3. How did the Scout leader help the mother and her three children?
A.He made room for them.B.He kept chatting with them.
C.He bought them tickets.D.He carried luggage for them.
4. Which of the following best describes the Boy Scouts?
A.Energetic.B.Humorous.C.Creative.D.Caring.

6 . I was lucky on the first night of the trip, because I had an empty seat next to me. But I found out this wasn’t the best solution for sleeping. I woke up early and kept a journal.

I was excited to see Chicago. I had never been there before and didn't really know what to expect. l was also looking forward to finding somewhere to take a shower. I wouldn't recommend trying to shave (刮胡子) on the train, Even holding a toothbrush by your face could be dangerous with the constant movement of the train, let alone a razor(剃刀).

We had one last stop before Chicago, and I remembered hopping(跳跃)on the platform for a few minutes. It was cold! I was on my way to Cali, and figured I wouldn't need too many warm clothes. Brilliant. I had one hoodie (连帽上衣) and was wearing it for most of the trip. We got on the train and soon things changed from the scenery along the Great Lakes, into a more urban area. On the train, you aren’t presented with “Welcome to...” signs for different cities and towns. You get to see parts of them that aren’t cleaned up and beautified for your view. You get to go to the areas that aren't so pretty, and that’s another reason why I loved the experience.

We rolled past alleys, streets, and soon enough, a lot of other trains. Chicago seems to be quite busy. The amount of tracks and signals was amazing. The sun was rising when we rolled into Union Station's platform. The entire platform is inside a big “garage” for the trains. I grabbed my luggage and made my way inside the station. The architecture of Union Station was really amazing.

1. Why did the author think he was lucky?
A.Because he woke up early.
B.Because he kept a journal.
C.Because he had enough room to sleep.
D.Because he found the best solution for sleeping-
2. What can we know from Paragraph 2?
A.The author wanted to have a swim.
B.The author knew what he would see.
C.Holding a toothbrush by your face is exciting.
D.Shaving on the train is dangerous.
3. Why did the author hop on the platform for a few minutes?
A.He wanted to do some exercise.B.He wanted to see inside the train.
C.He wanted to warm himself up.D.He wanted to see the signs clearly.
4. When did the author reach the Union Station?
A.In the morning.B.At noon.
C.In the evening.D.At night.

8 . Standing at the top of the world, I cleared the ice from my oxygen mask(氧气面罩), bent a shoulder forward against the wind, and stared absently down at the land of Tibet. Finally I had made it-the top of Mount Qomolangma.

I understood on some dim level(隐约地)that the earth down there was a grand sight. I’d been longing for this moment, and the excitement that would come with it. But now that I was finally here, actually standing on the top of Mount Qomolangma, I just couldn’t collect the energy to care.

It was early on the afternoon of May 10, 1996. I hadn’t slept for fifty-seven hours. My stomach was upset because the only food I’d been able to force down over the past three days was a bowl of soup. To make things worse, weeks of violent coughing had made ordinary breathing a bitter process. At 29,028 feet above the sea level, there was so little oxygen reaching my brain that I couldn’t think better than a slow child. Right now I could not feel much of anything except cold and tired. After taking four quick photos, I turned and headed down. I’d spent less than five minutes on the roof of the world.

Looking down the route we had climbed, I noticed something that until that moment had escaped my attention. To the south, where the sky had been perfectly clear just an hour earlier, a blanket of clouds now hid the lesser mountains surrounding. Nothing I saw early that day suggested that a violent storm was approaching. To my oxygen-exhausted mind, the clouds coming up the grand valley of ice appeared no different from the harmless clouds that rose from the valley almost every afternoon.

As I was climbing down, I began to get extremely anxious. However, my concern at that moment had little to do with the weather; I had almost run out of oxygen. I ought to have checked earlier. I needed to get down, fast.

1. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.The top of the world.B.The land of Tibet.
C.A grand sight.D.Reaching the top.
2. Why did the writer leave the top so quickly?
A.He was exhausted and weak.B.He had dropped his camera.
C.An unexpected violent storm arrived.D.He had fear of heights.
3. What can we infer from the passage?
A.The grand sight made the writer scream.
B.The weather on Qomolangma was changeable.
C.The writer was energetic and strong-minded.
D.The writer was experienced and well-prepared.
