3 . It was a warm winter’s day in South Africa and I planned to go surfing. The area of beach I went to is famous among surfers for its powerful waves and popularity with sharks.
After a while my brother and some of my friends got out of the water because they felt uneasy. There was the smell of fish in the air, which could attract sharks. A few of us stayed, Finally, I saw my first big wave, but as I was about to hit it, two great white sharks attacked me.
It happened so quickly. One shark hit me, throwing me into the air; in a split second, it dragged me under the water. The shock stopped me from feeling pain. Under the water, another shark went for my head and shoulders but missed.
Perhaps surprised by the competition, the first shark lost its grip on me and the next thing I knew was that I was staring a shark straight in the face. It stared back at me for a few moments. Its mouth was wide open; I could see huge teeth and dark black eyes. After it passed, I swam to the surface as fast as I could.
When I got there, I saw my surfboard lying in front of me. As I climbed on, I saw that my right hand was hanging off. I was losing blood quickly. When surfing, there is always the fear in the back of your mind of sharks. Now it was real. I was shaking, crying and panicking, realizing that I could die. I tried all my hardest to swim back to the shore.
Eventually, I made it to dry land. I felt relief. Someone tied my arm to slow the bleeding and my brother rushed me to the hospital. The surgeon managed to save my fingers.
That day changed my life, but it hasn’t stopped me from surfing. I started a surfing school to teach the sport to others. I was more afraid of sharks before my attack. Now I’m just grateful to be alive.

4 . If a human can get a prosthetic limb(假肢), why not an animal? Easier said than done however, as while there is a tremendous amount of ongoing research for human prosthetics, there is hardly any for animals.
But this Jaipur-based veterinary surgeon did not want to wait around anymore. Dr Tapesh Mathur is credited with making the ‘Krishna Limb’, India’s first prosthetic limb for animals. Tapesh has been designing prosthetic limbs for animals since 2015 and to date, has helped 90 animals adapt to using a prosthetic. From design to production, Tapesh does all the work by himself at his home-workshop. He provides the artificial limbs for free.
Tapesh said, “I could not bear to see their (the cattle’s) pain . These animals could not voice their anxiety as humans can, but they feel the pain all the same. They waited helplessly for food or for someone to clean them. And I kept thinking if we can help humans walk again, why can’t something similar be done for these animals? Thus I began my research.”
Tapesh designed his first prosthetic limb for a two-year-old calf named Krishna, who learnt to walk using the limb.
Producing these prosthetic limbs wasn’t an easy task initially, and Tapesh required raw material, which was expensive. Polypropylene, which is used for manufacturing prosthetic limbs, is only supplied in quantity by suppliers, and Tapesh had to source it from Mumbai using his own savings.
Now, Tapesh designs various prosthetic limbs for different animals. “We generally work with cows, horses, and dogs, but have started receiving applications for other animals as well. Recently, we got a request for a limb for a pet parrot. We are still working on the design.”
There are certain steps involved in designing. First, Tapesh takes the necessary measurements, based on which the artificial limb is moulded. The real challenge comes when Tapesh has to visit animals living in remote areas as his patients often cannot be brought to him. Once the prosthetic limb is ready, Tapesh visits the animal and attaches it for free.

A bright sun setting, Sylvia was driving home her cow, a valued companion, wandering through the forest, and listening to birds’ singing. Suddenly the air was cut by a sharp whistle not far away. Sylvie knew it wasn’t a bird’s whistle.
“Hello, little girl,” a young man came into sight suddenly, “I’ve lost my way. Do you think I can spend the night at your house?” Sylvia was alarmed, but still agreed.
When they arrived, her grandma, Mrs. Tilley, welcomed the guest with hospitality. The man explained to them that he was an ornithologist (鸟类学者). “Do you cage them up?” Sylvia asked doubtfully. “Oh no,” he answered enthusiastically, “I shoot dozens and dozens of them myself, and preserve them with special chemicals.”
“Sylvia knows a lot about birds, too.” Her grandmother said proudly.
“Really? I caught a glimpse of a very rare bird, a little white heron (苍鹭), which keeps me around. Have you seen it, too?” He gently asked, looking at Sylvia with some hope.
But Sylvia was watching a frog in the narrow footpath.
“It’s a tall, white bird with soft feathers and long thin legs. It probably has its nest at the top of a tall tree.” The man continued eagerly.
Sylvia’s heart gave a wild beat. She knew that special white bird! She had seen it on the other side of the forest and had once approached softly near where it stood.
The young man added desperately, “I would give $100 to you.”
Her grandma gave amazed attention to it, but Sylvia still watched the road.
The next day the young man hovered about the woods, and Sylvia kept him company, having lost her first fear. They had such a wonderful day to enjoy the birds’ songs and the thick branches. She had never seen anyone so handsome and charming. A strange excitement filled her heart. Sylvia would have liked him better without his gun. She could not understand why he killed the birds he seemed to like so much. She felt her heart tremble every time he shot an unsuspecting bird as it was singing in the trees.

Neesha, an 8-year-old golden retriever, is a lucky dog. After spending a fortnight on her own without food or real shelter, the tough dog was accidentally spotted by a couple, who in spite of the cold weather, were hiking the range and came across her.
Two weeks earlier, Neesha’s owners had taken her and their other dog, a German shepherd named Harley, for some outdoor exercise. Frightened by a deer, both dogs ram away. Harley found his way back to the parking lot the next day, but Neesha did not.
The family made a thorough search. They left a laundry basket of unwashed clothing near the spot where they’d last seen Neesha in the hope that she’d head straight towards the familiar smell marker. They even turned to the Internet for help in finding Neesha—but there was still no sign of her.
“We posted our experience on social media. Then a weekend later, we were still looking for her. We were starting to give up hope,” said the pet’s owner Erina O’Shea Goetelen told The Irish Times.
Eventually, the family began to accept that Neesha might not be coming home. “We just thought she is 8, and it’s been two weeks. There was no way she could survive.“
Doctors Ciara Nolan and Jean Francois Bonnet must truly be crazy hikers. They braved the elements on the freezing day when the couple decided to reach one of Wicklow’s peaks. As they neared the top, Nolan was shocked to see a dog shaking in the snow.
“She was frightened, freezing cold. She didn’t have enough energy to bark or stand, ”Bonnet said in an interview. “We tried to get her to walk, but she couldn’t stand. So we covered her with our spare clothes and gave her some food.”
