1 . The African penguin lives on St. Croix island off the east coast of South Africa. A new study has found that they are leaving their natural environment to escape noisy ship refueling (补给燃料) activities.

The African penguins once mainly raised babies on this island. But the population has dropped sharply since South Africa started permitting ships in the area to refuel at sea six years ago, the study found.

Lorien Pichegru is acting director of the Coastal and Marine Research Institute at Nelson Mandela University, which led the study. She said the organization had found that noise levels in the area had doubled since the refueling activities began. Scientists say high noise levels affect the ability of penguins to find and catch other animals for food. Noise also makes it more difficult for them to communicate with each other and map travel paths. ‌“This year we are at 1,200 breeding pairs at St Croix from 8,500 pairs in 2016,” Pichegru said.

The study recently appeared in the publication Science of the Total Environment. The researchers said the study is the first to explore the effects of ocean traffic noise pollution on a seabird.

Nelson Mandela University’s study collected some data to estimate underwater noise from passing ships. Oil-covered penguins were found in 2019 in Algoa Bay after an oil spill from ship-to-ship refueling. Environmental groups have called for the activities to be banned in the bay.

Pichegru said penguins in the area were already struggling to survive because of a series of issues, including industrial fishing activities. She added that the refueling activities did not kill all the penguins. However, ‌“It was just the thing that made the whole ecology tip over and then the penguins couldn’t cope with that,” she said.

1. What has the new study found about penguins?
A.They have difficulty in raising babies.B.They can get used to noisy ships easily.
C.Their population is on the increase.D.They are forced to leave the natural environment.
2. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.The value of Lorien Pichegru’s job.B.The importance of ship refueling activities.
C.The ability of Penguins to find food.D.Bad effects of noises on Penguins.
3. What might Pichegru agree with?
A.The penguins should be put in control.
B.Fishing activities should be greatly encouraged.
C.Refueling activities should be strictly managed.
D.The penguins should develop their survival abilities.
4. Where is this text most likely from?
A.A diary.B.A guidebook.C.A textbook.D.A magazine.

文章大意:本文是应用文。文章主要介绍一些与孩子们一起进行绿色旅行的小贴士。

3 . Tips for Green Travel with Kids

Travelling doesn’t mean letting go of all the eco-friendly choices we work so hard to achieve in our daily life. Here are a few tips for green travel with kids.

Booking nonstop flights whenever possible will reduce carbon emissions (碳排放). If the closest local airport doesn’t have nonstop flights to a certain place, check with other local airports to see if nonstop flights are available.     1

It’s easy when travelling to pull in to fast food restaurants for snacks.     2     My kids love to help plan snacks. I let them create their own snacks for the trip at home.

3     At the airport, keep your reusable bottles empty until you have passed through the security (机场安检区). Fill them up on the other side of the security checkpoint. Single-use plastic water bottles create unnecessary waste and the plastic can be harmful to your health.

4     In addition, opening a few windows and turning off the air conditioner (空调) are also good ways to save energy. You should also help your children keep their good, green habits while travelling. Sometimes vacation can mean more than one shower each day-once in the morning and again after getting out of the pool. Pay attention to the number of showers (淋浴) and the length of showers.     5

A.Walking is good for your health.
B.Try to cut back to save water and energy.
C.But you can pack healthy food from home.
D.Travelling is a great chance to introduce your kids to the world.
E.Reusable water bottles are easy to bring along wherever you travel.
F.Save energy by turning off the hotel room lights when you head out for the day.
G.You might have to drive a bit farther, but saving on carbon emissions makes it worthwhile.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了国家地理探险家Malaika Vaz将冒险与自然保护结合起来,从事野生动物电影制作。

4 . National Geographic Explorer Malaika Vaz knew from early on that she was destined for adventure. “I was someone who spent a lot of time outdoors,” Vaz says. Among her childhood experiences, she recalls expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic, climbing mountains, scuba diving, and windsurfing.

“In my late teens,” Vaz says, “I began to feel like adventure didn’t really mean anything if there wasn’t an intent to protect the natural spaces we were exploring in.” She began to seek an outlet that would both satisfy her desire for adventure and allow her to support the protection of the species and ecosystems.

Vaz had an interest in the medium of film, and decided to pursue a career in wildlife filmmaking. Today Vaz wears many hats in the filmmaking world, as a documentary director, producer, writer, and presenter.

After falling in love with mantas off the coast of her home, she discovered they were being hunted illegally and she dressed herself as a seafood trader to get as close as possible to the issue. She traced traffickers back to many parts of the world to figure out why mantas were being killed. She shares the challenges of going undercover to produce Peng Yu Sai, her Green Oscar-nominated film on the matter.

The subjects that grab her attention, Vaz admits, cover a wide range. And while she’s been asked to define her focus, she prefers variety, and argues that issues she pinpoints are more interrelated than they may appear.

Her work doesn’t stop at recording important stories-she’s also on top of follow-through, ensuring the message is heard. Vaz and her team work with scientists and policy makers to amplify the message of the films they work on.

From Vaz’s perspective, real improvement in the way the planet is cared for lies in the capable hands of many from various backgrounds. “The truth is that we don’t need ten really passionate, committed environmentalists. We need one hundred or one million people who can do a little bit in that field and change things within their ability.”

1. Which of the following helped Vaz combine adventure with nature protection?
A.Wildlife film-making.B.Free lifestyle.
C.Childhood experience.D.Outdoor activities.
2. What does the film Peng Yu Sai mention?
A.Vaz’s home on the coast.B.Vaz’s experience of mountain climbing.
C.The history of Green Oscar.D.The illegal hunting of mantas.
3. What really matters in protecting our planet according to Vaz?
A.The backgrounds of policy makers.B.The influence of films.
C.The guidance from environmentalists.D.The combined efforts of people.
4. Which of the following best describes Vaz?
A.Enthusiastic but careless.B.Adventurous and insightful.
C.Knowledgeable but proud.D.Humorous and patient.

In the classes, students could be assigned to find several solutions to energy problems while learning about their effects     4     the earth. Students also should     5     (encourage) to use what they learned in class at home.

Too many people think that global warming is not a threat, but it is one of our     6     (big) problems. Steps taken to be “green” in the school     7     (be) so effective. What would children be learning if the school’s lights were always left on and there were no recycling bins?

Green living and green schools are part of a new wave     8     (sweep) over the nation. 文章大意:本文是一篇应用文。主要介绍了四位我们应该知道的著名的环保主义者。

7 . Four Environmentalists You Should Know

George Washington Carver

George Washington Carver is one of the most famous scientists of the 20th century, not to mention a famous painter. He was an educator at the Tuskegee Institute and an inventor known for making plastics, fuel, and more out of peanut. He created a list of 300 uses for peanuts, and many more for soybeans and sweet potatoes, in an effort to increase financial gains for Southern farmers.

Julia Hill

After a serious auto accident in 1996, Julia Hill devoted her life to environmental causes. For two years, Hill lived in the branches of an ancient redwood tree which she named Luna in northern California to save it from being cut down. She eventually vacated (搬离) the 200-foot-tall tree after striking a deal with the Pacific Lumber Company. The tree was saved finally. Her tree-sit became an international cause.

Theodore Roosevelt

Though he was a known big-game hunter, Theodore Roosevelt was one of the most active champions of wilderness preservation in history. As governor of New York, he outlawed the use of feathers as clothing decorations in order to prevent the killing of some birds. While he was president (1901-1909), he set aside hundreds of millions of wilderness acres, which actively protected soil and water.

Chico Mendes

Chico Mendes is best known for his efforts to save the rainforests of his home Brazil from being cut down. Mendes came from a family of rubber harvesters who supplemented (补贴) their income by sustainably gathering nuts and other rainforest products. Alarmed at the damage of the Amazon, he helped to encourage international support for its protection. His activism drew the anger of powerful ranching (牧业) and timber interests, and he was murdered by cattle ranchers at age 44.

1. Who made a great contribution to agriculture?
A.George Washington Carver.B.Julia Hill.
C.Theodore Roosevelt.D.Chico Mendes.
2. Which achievement belongs to Julia Hill?
A.Protecting wilderness.
B.Saving a 200-foot-tall tree.
C.Creating many uses for peanuts.
D.Saving the rainforests of Brazil.
3. What do the four people have in common?
A.They saved some trees from being cut down.
B.They prevented the killing of some birds actively.
C.They played a positive role in protecting the environment.
D.They made great contributions to their people and their country .

To mark their hard work and contribution to wildlife protection in the reserve, last year, Shi’s 20-member team was recognized with a special award at an online award ceremony for the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas’ International Ranger Awards.

Kathy MacKinnon, head of the commission, speaks highly of their work, saying that they are “critical to our global conservation efforts, helping to stem biodiversity loss and protect the important ecosystems that serve as natural solutions to climate change and other global challenges".

Shi realizes that through protecting endangered animals, like giant pandas and snow leopards, the rich biodiversity of the environment can also be maintained, which is a win-win situation.

After graduation from Sichuan Forestry School(now Sichuan Agricultural University) in 1992, Shi became a forest guardian at the Wolong National Nature Reserve.

Established in 1963, Wolong is the country’s earliest panda reserve. It experienced serious human-animal conflict, such as illegal logging and hunting before the 1990s. In 1978, an observation tent, claimed to be the country’s first field camp to study wild giant pandas, was built on a steep forested slope in the reserve.

In the early 1980s, the government cooperated with the World Wide Fund for Nature to establish the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda to save the endangered animal.

At the very beginning, it was really difficult for rangers. With no proper outdoor equipment, like protective jackets or sleeping bags, every time, going around the area could be a life-threatening adventure. Plastic woven bags were commonly used for warmth and as makeshift tents for emergency cases. For Shi, the real challenges are natural disasters, which cannot be predicted.

10 . China and India are leaders in improving global tree cover, a new study based on NASA research showed.

They took a 31.8 percent part together of the total global new leaf area between 2000 and 2017. China played a major role, adding 25 percent to this increase, and India added 6.8 percent, followed by Canada and Russia.

The study in the Nature Sustainability journal shows that more than 5.5 million square kilometers of green leaf area was added globally. Since 2000, there has been a 5 percent increase in global green cover, it said.

“The greening over the last twenty years shows an increase in leaf area on plants and trees which is as large as the area of the entire Amazon rainforest,” Chi Chen, a Boston University researcher and leader of the study told Nature Sustainability. Large plantation activities to protect forests in China contributed nearly 42 percent to the country’s green cover, and agriculture (农业) added another 32 percent. In India, 82 percent of the increase in leaf area was because of agriculture.

“China and India take up one-third of the greening, but hold only nine percent of the planet’s land area covered in green plants,” Chi Chen told NASA Earth Observatory. “That is a surprising finding, considering the land degradation (退化) in countries with large populations.”

Boston University’s research team first detected an increase in global green cover in the 1990s but were unsure what contributed to the increase. Finally, with the help of NASA’s Terra and Aqua satellites research, they managed to find out the increase in leaf cover from different areas and places.

1. Which country contributed to the largest increase in the global new leaf area?
A.India.B.China.C.RussiaD.Canada.
2. For what purpose did the author mention the Amazon rainforest?
A.To show the major role of rainforest.
B.To explain the reason for developing agriculture.
C.To describe the difficulty in protecting forests.
D.To stress the great increase in global green cover.
3. What did Chi Chen think of the new finding?
A.Worrying.B.Interesting.C.Unexpected.D.Meaningless.
4. What does the underlined word “detected” probably mean?
A.Imagined.B.Discovered.C.Studied.D.Doubted.
