THE BEST JOB IN THE WORLD

How would you like to spend six months living on an island and looking after the Great Barrier Reef? The working hours are flexible and accommodation is provided. Key duties include exploring the islands of the reef and finding out what the area has to offer. You’ll need to report back via weekly blogs, photo diaries and video updates. You’ll also be asked to promote the islands through newspapers, magazines and TV interviews.

It was actually a very clever means to highlight the importance of the Great Barrier Reef and the need to protect it.

About the size of Japan, it even can be seen from outer space. More than 25 million years old, the Great Barrier Reef is made up of living coral growing on dead coral. It is host to many species of birds and sea creatures. But this unique and delicate place is now under threat from pollution and climate change.

To get this job, the candidates had to make a short video showing how much they knew about the reef. They also needed to prove why they were the best person to do the job. Out of the thousands of applicants, eleven were selected, including a young woman from China. Eventually, the job was offered to Ben Southall from the UK.

In addition to blogging, taking photos and writing articles about the reef, he made a number of appearances on television to argue in favour of its defence. He also worked as a presenter for the National Geographic Channel, before going on to write a book about his experiences. Ben later joked that the job should have been advertised not as the “best”, but the “busiest job in the world”!

The most important thing was that people all over the world became aware of the beauty of the ocean in the area. What’s more, they came to understand the delicate balance that the environment exists in and what can, and must, be done to protect the reef. That way, it will remain a safe habitat for wildlife, as well as a dream destination for the millions of tourists who visit it each year.

1. What’s the purpose of the job advertisement?
A.To protect the Great Barrier Reef.B.To build the Great Barrier Reef more beautifully.
C.To attract more candidates.D.To attract more tourists to travel in Australia.
2. What problem was the Great Barrier Reef faced with?

C.Pollution and climate change.D.Disappearing of the islands.
3. Which of the following is NOT true about Ben?

7 . 阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

Antarctica is the center of important scientific research. However, with an increasing number of day, scientists have to leave their work to greet a group of tourists who are taking a vacation in this continent of ice. Even though their desire to enjoy this vast and beautiful landscape can be appreciated, Antarctica should be closed to tourists.

Tourists in Antarctica can damage scientific research and hurt the environment. When tourist groups come, they take scientists away from their research. The work is difficult and some of the projects can be damaged by such simple mistakes as opening the wrong door or knocking against a small piece of equipment. In addition, tourists in Antarctica can also hurt the environment. Members of Greenpeace, one of the world’s leading environmental organizations, complain tourists leave trash on beaches and disturb the plants and animals. In a place as frozen as Antarctica, it can take one hundred years for a plant to grow back.

The need to protect Antarctica from tourists becomes even greater when we consider the fact that there is no government here. Antarctica belongs to no country. Who is making sure that the penguins, plants and sea are safe? No one is responsible. It is true that the number of tourists who visit Antarctica each year is smaller compared to the number of those who visit other places. However, these other places are controlled by local governments. They have an interest in protecting their natural environments. Who is concerned about the environment of Antarctica? The scientist, to be sure, but not necessarily the tour companies that make money from sending people south.

If we don’t protect Antarctica from tourism, there may be serious consequences for us all. We might lose the results of scientific research projects. It’s possible that these results could teach us something important about the causes and effects of climate change. Some fragile plants and animals might die and disappear forever. This could damage the balance of animal and plant life in Antarctica. We know from past experience that when things get unbalanced, harmful changes can occur.

Given the fact that chemical pesticides and artificial fertilisers can fight crop diseases and increase production, they    1    (be) in wide-spread use since the 1950s. 文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章一项研究阐述了食品生产的体系是导致全球变暖的一个重要因素,呼吁立即改善农业做法。

10 . Most of the efforts aimed at reducing climate change focus on reducing the use of fossil fuels (矿物燃料). But a new study warns that pollution caused by the world’s food production system is also a major driver of rising temperatures on the planet. The study found that if the world food system stays on its current growth path, it will produce nearly 1.4 trillion metric tons of greenhouse gases over the next 80 years.

That pollution is expected to come from fertilizers used in agriculture, mismanaged soil and food waste. Other causes include landclearing operations and deforestation (森林采伐). Researchers from the University of Minnesota and the University of Oxford in Britain led the study, which recently appeared in the publication Science.

The researchers predict that even if fossil fuel emissions (排放) were stopped now, emissions from the world food system would make it impossible to reach current international climate change targets. They say that emissions from food production alone could push world temperatures past 1.5 degrees Celsius by the middle of this century and above 2 degrees Celsius by the end of the century. A main goal of the 2015 United Nations Paris Agreement on climate change is to keep rises in the Earth’s temperature during this century to between 1.5 to 2 degrees Celsius. The U. N. has said that in order to stay below the 1.5 Celsius level, emissions must fall at least 7.6 percent each year through 2030.

The new study calls for immediate “improvements in farming practices, as well as changes in what we eat and how much food we waste,” to help reach the Paris Agreement goals. Jason Hill is a professor of biosystems engineering at the University of Minnesota. He helped lead the study. He said in a statement that the research clearly shows that food has a much greater effect on climate change than is widely known.

1. What’s the finding of the new study?
A.Fossil fuels are overused.
B.The use of fossil fuels causes climate change.
C.The use of fossil fuels is a major driver of rising temperatures.
D.The world’s food production system leads to rising temperatures.
2. What are the factors causing pollution?
①Fertilizers ②Food waste ③Landclearing operations ④Mismanaged soil
A.①②B.①③C.①②④D.①②③④
3. What can we know from the last paragraph?
A.Changing what we eat is important for our health.
B.It’s hard to reach international climate change targets.
C.Farming practices contribute to food waste.
D.Food has a much bigger impact on the environment than we expected.
4. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.Climate change mainly results from fossil fuels.
B.World food production has effects on climate change.
C.It’s of great Importance to reduce world food production.
D.Several ways are taken to reduce environmental pollution.
