1 . Joey, who was six at the time, had the day off from school. His father, Joe Welch, a 50-year-old photographer, planned to spend the day boating in the huge river. Joe had never before been into the muddy waters, which were famous for crocodiles (鳄鱼). He had researched what to do if they encountered one-just in case.

Joe turned to scan the boat, less than 20 feet from the water’s edge and then he was busy making some sandwiches at a wildlife refuge. Seconds later, he heard a splash and a scream. Joey had slipped at the edge of the water. When Joe rushed there, he saw his son’s right arm in the jaws of a crocodile which was at least eight feet long and close to 200 pounds. Time seemed to stop as Joe ran toward his son. The river was almost three feet deep. As Joey struggled and screamed, Joe began pulling him back toward the bank. A young man ran over, screaming at Joe to pull his son out of the water. But Joe feared what would happen to Joey’s arm if he pulled too hard. While Joe knocked on the beast’s head, the young man kicked its stomach. After the stranger’s three or four kicks, the crocodile released Joey and escaped back into the water. Joe picked up his son and found that he’d suffered only a few cuts and scrapes. Joe thanked the stranger and sped home. A nearby hospital determined that Joey was OK.

Joe has tried to find out who helped save his son, but he has learned only that the man was a boxer from Spain. He had been in the country visiting his family. “ He’ s like an angel,” Joe says.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段。使之构成一篇完整的短文。

We study at a board school (寄宿学校) and can’t go out without permission. Days seem too long and sometimes we miss our parents. Most of us are looking forward to weekends, expecting to go back home.

One Friday afternoon, it was time for us to go home to see our parents. You can imagine how excited we were when we finished all the classes. Everyone rushed to the school gate.

There were black clouds above and it was going to rain, but the bus didn’t come. Some of us became annoyed. With several thunders rumbling, it was pouring within seconds.

Therefore, many students ran towards the bus stop near the school gate, waiting under the roof, some patient, while some upset, because the heavy rain messed up their precious day.

“The bus is coming!” someone shouted excitedly. Most students were filled with joy when hearing the words. They couldn’t wait to get on the bus. The bus stop was in chaos immediately.

“Be quick to get a seat, ” two girls standing next to me talked anxiously.

All the students folded their umbrellas and ran towards the bus.

“Ouch!” someone shouted.

The crowd was wondering where the cry came from. Anxious and concerned, a tall boy made it clear that a girl was hurt in the eye by an umbrella. Some students advised she should be taken to the nearest hospital at once.

The Cause for Kobe’s Helicopter Crash

Federal officials announced in the press that the helicopter crash that killed Kobe Bryant and eight others in 2020 occurred because the pilot likely got disoriented (失去方向) while flying into the clouds against federal rules.

“The pilot, Ara Zobayan, who also died     1    the Jan. 26, 2020, crash in Calabasas, California, was operating the helicopter under rules that prevented him from flying into clouds. However, he did not follow his training and continued into the clouds     2    the aircraft crashed into a hill,” investigators said.

The crash also killed Bryant’s 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, two other teenage girls with their family members, along with     3    basketball coach. The victims were on their way from Orange County to a girls’ basketball game at Bryant’s Mamba Sports Academy.

“While     4    (encounter) the foggy weather conditions, Zobayan notified air traffic controllers that he was climbing to 4, 000 feet to get above the cloud layer, when in fact, the helicopter was actually going down rapidly,” federal investigators said at a National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) hearing.

The NTSB     5    (determine) that Zobayan likely experienced “spatial disorientation”, a misleading sensation that confuses pilots into not knowing which way is up or down.

Investigators also said that given his very close friendship with Bryant, Zobayan     6    have experienced “self—induced pressure” to complete the flight so as not to disappoint Bryant. While the NTSB said there was no evidence to suggest that Bryant     7    placed any pressure on Zobayan to complete the flight, the self-induced pressure might have to a great extent affected pilot’s decision making and judgment. “While climbing into the clouds, Zobayan lost visual references,     8    could lead to a false sense of orientation owing to inner ear illusions,” investigators said. “This could cause the pilot to believe they were flying straight and level, while in reality they were flying in a steady left turn—this is     9    we call ‘the leans’. And that finally led to the tragedy.”

From 2010 to 2019, there were 184 fatal aircraft accidents related to spatial disorientation in America, 20 of which were fatal helicopter accidents. Experts say they are trying to work out better solutions to this problem to make future flights     10    (safe).
