1 . A 3 year-old boy who was lost in the woods for two days is now safe at home with his family. But Casey Hathaway told his rescuers that he was not alone in the rainy, freezing cold woods. He said he was with a friend—a bear.
The child went missing on January 22 while playing with friends at his grandmother’s house in the southern state of North Carolina. When the other children returned to the house and Casey did not, the family searched the area for almost an hour before calling the police. Police formed a rescue team to look for the young boy in the nearby woods. But two days went by and still—no Casey.
Then on January 24, someone called the police saying they heard a child crying in the woods. Police followed up on the information and found Casey at about 9:30 that night. Casey told the rescuers that he had hung out with a black bear for two days, a bear he called his “friend”. The woods of North Carolina are home to many black bears, like this one.
Sheriff Chip Hughes spoke with reporters from several news agencies. He said Casey did not say how he was able to survive in the woods for two days in the cold, rainy weather. However, the sheriff said, “He did say he had a friend in the woods that was a bear that was with him.”
Hundreds of people helped in the search efforts, including some 600 volunteers, and members of the military. Officer Hughes told reporters that at no point did he think Casey had been kidnapped. Doctors at Carolina East Medical Centre treated Casey for minor injuries. He was then released to his family on January 25.
His mother Brittany Hathaway talked with reporters from a local news agency, “We just want to tell everybody that we’re very thankful that you took the time out to come search for Casey, ” said his mother.

On a late afternoon, Brandon finished feeding his cows on the farm and decided to go back with his two sons, Louie, 6, and Everett, 3. As they headed for the house, the two boys ran ahead of their father. Suddenly Brandon was aware he forgot to close the door of the barn (牲口棚). He told the boys to wait for him at the gate and returned to lock it. When he was at the gate minutes later, he saw only his youngest son.
“ Where’s Louie? ” he shouted.
“He fell in the hole!” Everett said.
Brandon quickly realized what had happened. Noooo, he thought. Louie can barely swim! He ran to the well and heard Louie splashing, trying not to . Instinctively, he jumped in.
Somehow Brandon managed to grab on to a pipe that ran down the side of the well, which slowed his fall and kept him from crushing (挤压) his son.
Finally, Brandon hit the freezing water at the bottom of the well. He popped his head out of the water and grabbed Louie, who was panicking and trying to stay afloat in water that was too deep for either of them to stand. Knowing they could tread (踩水) for only so long, Brandon lifted his son onto his chest as he packed his own back against the narrow walls for support.
“All right, Dad, you can pull us out now,” Louie said.
If only it were that easy. There was no way he could climb out. The pipe that he’d grabbed during his fall was too slippery to be of any use. There was only one way out.
Looking up to see Everett peering down at them from the top of the well, Brandon shouted, “Everett, you’re going to have to be a big boy and save us. Run to the road and stand by the mailbox until someone stops. Tell them we need help. ”
Everett did as he was told. He stood alone by the side of the road, waving to stop someone.

9 . It’s not common that a grandmother aged 89 is crowned Queen of Icebergs in North America, but when it does happen it’s dangerous.
On a recent trip to Iceland, Judith Streng became that grandma after her son attempted to take a photograph of her sitting on an ice structure that looked like a throne at Diamond Beach in Jokulsarlon. Shortly after Streng sat down to pose, the piece of ice broke off and floated into the water.
“I thought it was safe. One girl had been on it and then two girls at the same time, and it was very secure with them. When I got on it, it started to shake and a wave was coming in. A very large wave came in and made the throne kind of shake, and I could tell that I was slipping off,” Streng told ABC News.
Streng’s story went hot after her 24-year-old granddaughter Catherine tweeted a text message exchange she had with her father about the incident. “My grandmother almost got lost at sea in Iceland today!”
Catherine, who teaches English in Seoul, South Korea, explained via Twitter that her father described the scene vividly. He has a PhD in English, and described the event in the following words, “She climbed to the throne after a wave had pulled back and left it briefly exposed on the beach. Then a wave washed in and removed the ice throne, rocking it from side to side. When the wave left, it lifted the throne and carried her out into the sea with the tide.”
Luckily for the Streng family, Randy, a licensed boat captain from Florida with knowledge of water rescue strategies, witnessed the whole thing, and was able to save the day.

Brady was a recently retired search and rescue dog. He was not happy and missed his owner Al because Al had gone out on a rescue mission without him. Al’s nephew Steve took Brady along when he and his friend Zach went on an overnight hike. But suddenly Steve and Zach smelled something burning and they realized that the lightning had set the woods on fire. Wind-blown flame had leaped from the top of one tree to another. The long dry summer had turned the forest into a tinderbox(火绒盒), and the thunderstorm wasn’t helping much. It had more wind and lightning than rain. Zach pulled Steve’s arm. “Let’s go! We can make it back to the river we crossed today.” Steve snapped Brady’s leash to his collar, and their heads down against the strong fire-wind, they hurried down the trail they had followed earlier. The air was full of smoke, and pine branches snapped from burning trees with a cannon-like sound. Steven kept his eyes fixed on the trail. All they had to do was to make it down to the river.
Brady barked a sharp warning. Ahead of them lay a dense curtain of smoke across the trail. They’d never make it through, so they’d have to find another escape route. The dog was pulling at his leash, trying to draw them away from the smoke. This was what Brady was trained to do, and yet Steve was uneasy. It seemed to him they were moving away from the river.
Brady lifted his head and smelled the smoke-laden wind. Next moment, the dog ran away and disappeared. The boys yelled and shouted for him, but he didn’t come back.
They had no choice but to leave him behind. They went up a slope(斜坡). They couldn’t blame Brady for panicking and escaping. They themselves wanted to run even though they didn’t have a clue which way. They hadn’t gone far when there was a familiar back, and Brady came running toward them.
