For a high school volleyball team, making the state semifinals(半决赛)would be a big event. But for the girls’ team at Paradise Adventist Academy in Northern California, this year was different. Some of the players had lost everything in the terrible wildfires—including their volleyball jerseys(球衣)—and their match against Forest Lake Christian School suddenly felt less important.
When coach Jason Eyer surveyed the players and their families about the November 10 semifinal game, they were of one mind. The team hoped to make the 80-mile trip south to Auburn, California, for the game. Some players were planning to play in T-shirts with jersey numbers written on them with markers.
When he learned that Paradise would still come to play, Forest Lake Christian Athletic Director LaRon Gordon set up a meeting with school leaders. They contacted everyone they knew and asked for donations. And they put three boxes outside the school for donations. By the next day, the boxes were full. The night before the game, Gordon found a company that agreed to work overnight to make jerseys for the Paradise team.
When the Paradise team arrived at the gym they found their 12 new jerseys. They saw the jerseys with socks and kneepads and shorts and there were bags with shoes. It was just a feeling of great love.
Paradise lost. But their night wasn’t over. At the end of the match the Forest Lake team handed every girl on the Paradise team an envelope (信封)with $300 worth of gift cards inside. And they presented Eyer with a box of gift cards and cash worth over $10,000 for the families at the school.
“Everything about that night made a difference to me and my devastated (被摧毁的) community,” he said. “We have now been helped in so many ways. The girls and I have talked about how we were supported—it should now be our turn to give back and try to pass on this spirit and sense of community.”
