The film, which has got 600 million yuan in only three days, is Ne Zha. For most Chinese born in the 1980s, their knowledge of Ne Zha comes from the ancient novel Fengshen Yanyi, as well as the 1986 TV series The Journey to the West and the 1990 hit drama Fengshen Bang. The stories of Ne Zha are retold in different ways in different times.
In the film, Ne Zha has a big change to his look. Another character, the Dragon King’s third son Ao Bing, almost destroys Ne Zha’s birthplace, Chen Tang Guan, in a selfish way. Ne Zha’s father, Li Jing, is no longer selfish as described in the past works; instead, he becomes a kind father willing to give up his own life to rescue his son. Ne Zha is born with a “cursed destiny”. He is unfairly treated by local villagers who believe that the naughty, yet good-hearted, child will grow up to be a public danger. In Ne Zha’s eyes, he believes his destiny is not predetermined and that he can choose to be a demon or a god.
“Humans are complex. You cannot judge a person with prejudice” the director said.
