As a kid, I walked to the library several times a week and stayed up late reading. I checked out so many books and returned them so quickly that the librarian once snapped, “Don’t take home so many books if you are not going to read them all.”
“But I did read them all,” I said.
In college, when I created my online dating (约会) profile, in the “favourite books” section I put One Hundred Years of Solitude, A Moveable Feast, White Fang and so on. But I realized I hadn’t read most of those titles for two years.
David was my first online date. David read about a book or two a week. When we compared libraries, we had only four titles in common.
On our seventh date, David and I visited the library.
“I have a game,” he said, taking out two pens and Post-its (便利贴). Let’s find books we have read and leave reviews in them for the next person.
We stayed there for an hour.
Before leaving, I said, “I will tell you something. I have only read one book this year.” “But you like books,” he said. “You like bookstores. You like libraries. Read a book!”
Back home, David’s charge to “read a book” echoed in my head. I bought books whenever I got the chance, but I hardly read them. They sat on every surface until my house appeared to wear books the way one wears clothes.
I picked up one. Whenever I wanted to give up on it, I thought of David. I felt him pushing me to be more of the person I used to be.
“How’s your day?” David texted.
“ Good. A little tired,” I replied. “I stayed up late and finished my book.” The last time I pulled an all-nighter to read, I was 12 and the book was Little Women.
David advised us to visit the library again. He pulled a book from the shelf, dropped to one knee, and opened it. Inside, his Post-it read: “Karla, it has always been you. Will you marry me?”
His proposal had rested in the book for over a year.

Jamie stood looking at the map. He turned it around. He looked up from the map. He looked back at the map. He took a few steps back along the path. He put his finger on the map, and looked up again. “It’s no use!” he shouted. He threw the map away, and sat down on the ground.
I asked him what the matter was.
Jamie said, “We’re lost. We must have taken a wrong turning.”
He didn’t know where we were. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry,” he said again and again.
I told him not to worry. “We’ll follow the river,” I said. “The river flows into the sea, so it will take us back to the coast.” This seemed like a good plan. We set off down the hill. The river was a long way below us. It was getting dark, and it was starting to rain. Jamie started to run. “Come on!” he called, “In an hour, it will be dark and we won’t be able to see where we’re going.” “Stop!” I shouted, “Don’t run. It’s dangerous!”
As soon as I saw him fall, I knew he was badly hurt. When I reached him, he said that his leg and foot hurt. He wasn’t able to stand up. Now, we were lost, we were a long way from home, and Jamie couldn’t walk.

While the mobile Internet is changing the way we live, more and more old people in China are getting in on the digital world, though they still have some trouble.
Yang Su, a 61-year-old professional micro vlogger ( 专业微博博主), is among them. With more than 2.3 million followers on China’s famous short video app “Douyin”, his videos have been watched by over 1 million times.
“Three years ago, my son put a short video of me playing the piano at home on ‘Douyin’, and hours later it was played over 1 million times,” Yang remembered.
After graduating from the Shanghai Conservatory (⾳乐学院) of Music, he was a pianist of the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra (交响乐团). The Internet has opened a door to a whole new world for him. For the past three years, he has filmed over 700 short videos and opened an official account on social platform WeChat to share articles and offer online piano lessons.
It’s not easy for him to learn how to film a video, something that might not be easy even for young people. Spending a long time staring at the sheet music (活⻚乐谱) always causes eye soreness, and he needs to play through the music since he doesn’t know how to edit (编辑) and cut clips. His child helps him a lot later. “The Internet has opened the door to a new world,” Yang said. “I always keep myself busy and feel very young at my age.”
However, do other old people get used to the digital world like Yang? Ding Qiulin is a 73-year-old man from Hunan. “I got my smartphone more than one year ago, but I only use WeChat for video calls,” he said. Ding finds it hard to learn to use other apps.
▲ Luo Xu, a post-90s volunteer, joined a non-profit organization in Beijing nine years ago to teach old people how to use the Internet. “While I am helping people aged between 50 and 90 years old, I have a strong feeling of satisfaction,” Luo said.

C.By playing the piano on “Douyin”. | D.By giving online piano lessons. |

B.However, many young people find it hard to teach the old to use the Internet. |
C.As a result, old people have to spend much time learning to use the smartphone. |
D.Luckily, younger people are building a bridge between the digital world and the old. |
A.Relaxing. | B.Meaningful. | C.Difficult. | D.Boring. |
A.To tell us we should learn to make short videos like Yang. |
B.To explain why the mobile Internet is popular in our country. |
