In recent years, with the increased popularity of Chinese culture, wuxia-related works have started to become popular with overseas audience.A great deal of wuxia-related books, movies and TV shows are being introduced to overseas audience. For example, the television series Word of Honor gained more than 100 million views on YouTube last year, with Southeast Asia among the areas with the highest number of viewers for the production.

When Singaporean Tong Weiqiang watched Hong Kong wuxia, or martial arts, dramas more than 10 years ago, he was interested in the stories. Tong said he became interested in traditional culture at a young age through classic novels such as Dream of the Red Chamber and Journey to the West. Later, he read wuxia novels by writers such as Louis Cha, Gu Long and Liang Yu sheng, and has remained a fan of wuxia. “Most people in our cultural society first learned about han fu from these costume dramas,” he said. He even pioneered a local movement to promote hanfu and founded the Singapore Han Cultural Society in 2012 to attract more hanfu lovers.

As of last year, more than 10,000 online literary works had entered overseas markets, attracting over 100 mllion foreign readers, especially those in Southeast Asia. Lily Lee, leader of You Cloud, which operates App Growing, said, “Due to geographical and cultural factors(因素), Southeast Asian users tend to have a higher acceptance of wuxia, or other themes with strong Chinese characteristics.” In Thailand, many young people have become crazy about wuxia through games, rather than novels or dramas, according to Yazhou Zhoukan, a Chinese-language newsweekly in Hong Kong.

Now China is improving its games even further, with the 14th National Fitness Day. As part of the celebrations, over 4,000 themed fitness sports activities have been held all around China, while another 100 activities have been launched(启动) online.

The themed activities include the likes of basketball, soccer, long-distance running and more traditional Chinese elements such as wushu and folk dance. Online sports activities, meanwhile, are raising people’s enjoyment of sports like running, cycling and rope skipping, with smart apps and devices following them and allowing them to join competitions. Over the last 100 days, more than 12 million people have taken part in over 100 online events, with 2.7 million of those awarded(获奖) for their achievements.

“This is the 14th National Fitness Day since it began in 2009, and with all the efforts that we have put in over the years, sports and fitness have become more and more important in people’s lives,” Ding Dong, an official from the General Administration of Sport of China told China Daily. “The national fitness push is a truly special, long-term movement that welcomes participation(参与) and support from all walks of life. Now there are more and more fitness activities for people to choose from, while at the same time the quality of facilities is getting better and better.”

In Shanghai, fitness day activities have been particularly popular. These activities include from traditional events to more modern, on-trend sports like skateboarding, frisbee and even e-sports motor racing. At the same time, the All-China Sports Federation has organized a community street basketball series in over 50 cities across the nation, with each stop covers over 2,000 joiners of all age groups. For the most part, games are held at communities and large shopping malls in order to draw the attention of the widest possible people. All these events are the result of China’s efforts over the years to support.
