Claire King says she would never have started going to the Glastonbury Festival if her friend who runs a food stand hadn't needed a hand a few years ago. “I thought it would just be all noise, and I never liked rock music.” Now she says she would pay her friend to allow her to work at her stand! “The tickets sell like hot cakes, so it's the best way of making sure I can get to the five-day festival in June,” she points out.

Nick Hendon likes going to the Cambridge Folk Festival, which takes place over a long weekend in summer at Cherry Hinton Hall. His favourite festival area is the Club Tent where members of the audience, as well as the invited artists, can get up and perform. “My wife usually takes part. She has a beautiful voice,” he says proudly.

Joan Mitchell does her best to get to the International Eisteddfod, a dance and music festival which takes place every year during the second week of July in Wales. The festival is also famous for the final Sunday Evening Gala Concert which usually has some of the biggest names in opera as guest performers. “I've seen Dame Kiri Te Kanawa9 James Galway and Montserrat Caballe, but no one could ever match Luciano Pavarotti. He was truly breathtaking!”

Graham Crosby tries to get to as many concerts as possible during the eight-week summer season of the Proms festival every year. The Proms is the largest classical music festival in the world. “The atmosphere is much more relaxing than that at other classical concerts. In fact, the audience sometimes behave more like rock fans, jumping up and down to the music, which is really exciting.”

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。作者出生在乡下,对大自然有浓厚的兴趣。他利用大二出国学习的机会去了解加拿大,看到了美丽的极光。

Since I was born and brought up in a rural town, I have a great interest in nature. Having the chance of studying abroad in my second year at college, I decided to go to Canada just because I wanted to see the beautiful phenomena there. So after I finished the study, I went to Yellowknife in the Northwest. I clearly remember the sixth night in Yellowknife. Suddenly my host mother came to my room around 8 p. m. and told me to change clothes and go outside quickly carrying her camera.

The northern lights were flickering (闪烁) in the sky! I was amazed and just stood there with my mouth open. I forgot to take pictures of the mysterious lights.

Since that night, whenever it was sunny, I went outside at night and looked at the sky. It was so cold that my hands and feet were numb (失去知觉的) with cold. Actually, the time of my being able to be out was limited. I had to bring her camera back to the house in one hour at most, for the camera was going to be broken because of the cold temperature.

As I took pictures of the northern lights, I came to find a characteristic movement of the lights. They first appear in the north part of the sky and then they come down to the south. After that, suddenly, they come in the middle of the north and south only for a while, which is the time when the best northern lights can be seen. Since it is only a few seconds for the northern lights to come down to the middle of the sky, it is very hard to get good pictures.

The stronger the sun acts, the better and stronger northern lights flicker in the sky. That’s because they occur from the collision (碰撞) between atmospheric gases and solar wind. Much more solar wind comes to the earth when the sun is active, leading to the best northern lights.

4. Why did the author forget to take pictures?
A.His host mother didn’t remind him.
B.He was shocked by the wonderful sights.
C.He lost all the feelings in his hands and feet.
D.The lights flickering disappeared after a while.
5. What can we infer from the text?
A.The northern lights came out every night.
B.The author took lots of pictures with his camera.
C.The author could stay as long as he liked outdoors.
D.Camera s will be damaged if exposed too long to coldness.
6. When is the best time to see the northern lights?
A.They are between the north and south.
B.They rise in the east and set in the west.
C.They appear in the north part of the sky.
D.They come down to the south part of the sky.
7. Why is it hard for the author to take good pictures?
A.The lights of the sun affect the northern lights.
B.The lights are caused by the collisions of gases.
C.The lights stay in the middle for a very short time.
D.The colours of the lights are determined by the height.

Genetic modification (基因改良) dates back to ancient times, when humans influenced genetics by selectively breeding organisms (培育生物) according to an article by Gabriel Rangel, a public health scientist at Harvard University. When repeated over several generations, this process leads to great changes in the organisms.

Dogs were likely the first animals to be purposefully genetically modified, with the beginnings of that effort dating back about 32,000 years, according to Rangel. Wild wolves joined our hunter-gatherer ancestors in East Asia, where the aggressive canines were kept in the household and bred to become docile and easier to get along with. Over thousands of years, people bred dogs with different desired character and physical characteristics, eventually leading to the wide variety of dogs we see today.

The earliest known genetically modified plant is wheat. This valuable crop is thought to have originated in the Middle East and northern Africa in the area known as the Fertile Crescent, according to a 2015 article published in the Journal of Traditional and Complementary Medicine. Ancient farmers selectively bred wheat grasses beginning around 9000 B. C. to create improved varieties with larger grains and hardier seeds. By 800 B.C., the cultivation (培养) of improved wheat had spread across Europe and Asia. The continued selective cultivation of wheat resulted in the thousands of varieties that are grown today.

Corn has also experienced some of greatest genetic changes over the past few thousand years. The main crop was changed from a plant known as teosinte, a wild grass with tiny ears and only a few seeds. Over time, farmers selectively bred the teosinte grasses to create corn with large ears bursting with seeds.

Beyond those crops, many of the fruit and vegetables we eat today, including bananas, apples and tomatoes, have experienced several generations of selective raising, according to Rangel.

In 1973, researchers also modified bacteria to be used as drugs. In 1982, human insulin (胰岛素) made from genetically engineered bacteria, became the first genetically engineered human drugs approved by the FDA.

8. What does the word “docile” in paragraph 2 most probably mean?
A.Gentle.B.Loyal.C.Smart.D.Ambitious.
9. How did the ancient farmers try to improve wheat?
A.Through selective cultivation.B.By editing its genes constantly.
C.Through mixture with teosinte.D.By planting it in large numbers.
10. What can we infer about genetic modification?
A.It is rarely seen in daily life.B.It was quite difficult to accept.
C.It is hardly influenced by humans.D.It played a role in medical field.
11. From which section of a newspaper is the text most probably taken?
A.Health.B.Lifestyle.C.Science.D.Agriculture.

Stephen Warren, study leader at the University of Washington, has been on the case of the green icebergs for more than 30 years. He first took samples from one of these green hunks of ice in 1988, near the Amery Ice Shelf, East Antarctic. Most glacial ice occurs in shades of white to brilliant blue. The bluer the ice, the older it is. Typically, compression (压缩)from accumulating layers of snow pushes air bubbles out of the ice, reducing the scattering of white light. The compressed ice absorbs most of the light except for blue, creating the blue color seen in the hearts of icebergs and glaciers.

The green ice was similarly bubble-free, and yet it looked green instead of blue. Warren and his team soon found that the green ice came not from glaciers, but from marine ice. That's the ice from the undersides of floating ice shelves.

At first, the team thought that organic material in the marine ice was causing the green color. But further research showed that the green marine ice didn't have a higher — than — usual amount of organic impurities. Now, a new study finds that a different sort of impurity may be the root cause of the green ice. Warren and his colleagues report that the marine ice at the bottom of the Amery Ice Shelf has 500 times more iron than the glacial ice above.

This iron comes from the rocks under the Antarctic Ice Sheet, which are turned into fine powder as glaciers move over them. The icebound iron oxidizes (氧化)as it contacts seawater. The resulting iron oxide particles take on a green color when light scatters through them. When icebergs break off the larger ice shelf, they carry this iron-rich ice with them. It's like taking a package to the post office. The iceberg can deliver this iron into the ocean far away, and then melt and deliver it to other living things that can use it as a nutrient.

12. What's special about the iceberg found by Warren?
A.The iceberg was old.
B.The iceberg absorbed blue light.

14. What's the function of the iron mentioned in the last paragraph?
A.Deliver the package.
B.Bring marine life nutrients.
C.Oxidize the seawater.
D.Break off the large ice shelf.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.A Study About Antarctic
B.The Colors of Icebergs
