Lisa Pina never thought she would need the fire safety training she received when she was a student learning painting. On Friday morning, she felt so thankful for having got the training.
On Thursday night, while Pina was looking after her granddaughter, nephew and two nieces in her sister’s apartment, she smelled smoke and realized the apartment building was on fire. When her 4-year-old granddaughter Garcia began saying, “we’re going to die”, she knew she had to act. Pina first closed the door, and then told all four children to lie on the floor. After calling 911, she told the children to start singing and promised them whatever they wanted to have as soon as they reached safety.
“I said, ‘OK, we’re going to lie down and we’re all going to play a game,’” Pina said. “We all started singing our ABCs and 123s. I was just trying to make it fun.”
Pina waited with patience, and a few minutes later, firefighters arrived. Pina and the children were all trapped on the second floor as flames filled the first floor.
Pina did the only thing she could. She opened the window and dropped the children, one by one, into the arms of the firefighters’ about 15-20 feet below.
“I just needed to keep the kids calm so they wouldn’t be frightened,” Pina said. “I was actually afraid inside, but I couldn’t let them know that.”

With the Forbidden City and Jingshan Park to its east, Zhongnanhai to its south, Beihai Park, also known as Northern Sea Park, is one of the oldest, largest and best-preserved ancient imperial gardenst (皇家花园) in China located in the center of Beijing.
Beihai Park is said to be built according to a traditional Chinese legend. The story is that once upon a time there were three magic mountains called “Penglai”, “Yingzhou” and “Fangzhang”. Gods in those mountains had a kind of medicine which would help humans gain immortality (永生). Consequently, many emperors constantly sought those mountains. I For example, Emperor Qin Shihuang had sent people to look for the magic mountains but they failed. Emperor Wudi, the fifth emperor of the Western Han Dynasty did similar things.
It was believed that different mountain-water combinations in ancient Chinese architecture led to totally different effects. So from then on, almost every emperor during the succeeding dynasties would build a royal garden with one-pool-with-three-hill layout near his palace. Beihai Park was surely built after this traditional style: the water of Beihai with Zhongnanhai is the Taiye Pool; the Jade Flowery Islet, the island of the Circular City and the Xishantai Island represent the three magic mountains.
Actually, Beihai Park was initially built in the Liao Dynasty (916-1125) and was repaired and rebuilt in the following dynasties including Jin, Yuan, Ming and Qing. The large-scale rebuilding in the reign of Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) generally established the present scale and pattern. In 1925, it was first opened to the public, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world every year.
It is enjoyable to walk around the various scenic areas in Beihai Park. There are many places to visit, including the Bai Ta, Five-Dragon Pavilions, Nine-Dragon Wall, Yong’an Temple and so on. There is also a classy restaurant called Fangshan Restaurant where the Empress Cixi once dined.

A new smartwatch app alerts users who are deaf or hard of hearing of nearby sounds, such as knocks at the door or fire alarms.
“The main motivation for the app came from my own experience, and conversations that my colleagues and I have had with deaf and hard of hearing people over several years, ”says Dhruv Jain, who presented the system, called SoundWatch.
Jain, who is hard of hearing, uses SoundWatch at home to avoid sleeping through a smoke alarm. “On a nature walk, it’ll tell me that there’s birds singing, or there might be a waterfall nearby, ” he says. “Those sounds make me feel more present and connected to the world. ”
Sound awareness apps for smartphones exist. But Jain prefers the immediacy of sound notifications on his wrist, rather than in his pocket-and surveys of people who are deaf or hard of hearing show he’s not alone.
The SoundWatch app pairs an Android smartwatch and phone. The watch records surrounding noises and sends that data to the phone for processing. When the phone finds a sound of interest, the smartwatch vibrates (振动)and displays a sign.
Jain, a computer scientist at the University of Washington in Seattle, and his colleagues designed the app to identify 20 noises. In experiments, SoundWatch correctly identified those 20 sounds 81. 2 percent of the time. When set to listen only for urgent noises-a fire alarm, door knock or alarm clock-the app was 97. 6 percent accurate. Eight deaf and hard of hearing people who used SoundWatch around a university campus gave the app broadly favorable reviews, but noted that the app misclassified some sounds in noisy outdoor settings.
Disability is highly personal, and Jain hopes his team can find ways for people to personalize this app for their own specific needs. For example, people can be told about the sounds they care about-a husband’s or wife’s voice versus general speech, the back door opening versus the front door opening, and more.
12. What inspired Jain to invent the SoundWatch?A.The desire to hear music. | B.His deaf colleagues. |
C.Sleeping through a smoke alarm. | D.His own experience of being hard of hearing. |
A.How the Sound Watch works. | B.Why Sound Watch is invented. |
C.The influence of the noises. | D.The link of smartwatches and phones. |
A.Waterfall. | B.Birds’ songs. | C.A fire alarm. | D.The sound of forest. |
A.Education. | B.Advertisement. | C.Technology. | D.Entertainment. |
Have you ever watched a silent television show and tried to predict how the characters were feeling according to their body language? The ability to understand people’s body language is a skill that’s almost born inside of us.
Body language helps us communicate what we’re feeling without saying much at all. Think about a time when you were very angry. Did you clench (咬紧) your teeth? Did your palms get sweaty when you were anxious? In most cultures, these cues (线索) that reveal emotional states are quite common. But gestures have specific meanings across different cultures. Take touch for example.
In some places, gestures meaning hellos and goodbyes and touches indicating friendship and love are all the same. But the problem arises because some gestures have vastly different meanings in different cultures. For example, the “OK” symbol is used as a superb symbol in India, but in Turkey, this symbol is considered offensive (冒犯性的).
So, what should we do? Should we not use gestures at all? Of course not.
A.It was a very kind and thoughtful gesture. |
B.So, the next time you decide to travel to another country |
C.When you flash the “OK” sign there, you’re asking for a fight. |
D.They also use a system of sounds and body language to communicate. |
E.Even the smallest children can figure out when their mothers are mad. |
F.Gestures are something that comes with the language of communication. |
G.A general way of saying “Hello” in western culture is a brief handshake. |

Spenser’s First Web
Spenser was a small black spider (蜘蛛). Like all of his brothers and sisters, he had eight legs to help him walk and run. He was now big enough to know how to move all his legs together and not trip over them. Spenser was getting bigger every day.
Today Spenser felt nervous. It was time for him to learn to spin (织) a web on his own. He had watched his mother build beautiful, soft webs from the silk she made herself. His mother’s webs were lovely. They took a long time to make, and in the morning, they were covered with drops of dew that made them look like castles.
“OK, Spenser,” said Ms. Spinney. “It’s time to spin your first web. Let’s begin by making a big plus sign.” Ms. Spinney was Spenser’s teacher. She was old and small but very strong. She quickly used her silk to make a plus sign between two nearby leaves.
Spenser was able to make silk, but he had trouble attaching it to anything. No matter how hard he tried, the threads (丝) slipped away and fell to the ground. Spenser tried hard, but he was getting tired.
“Take a break, Spenser,” said Ms. Spinney. “You’re trying very hard, but I can see that you’re getting frustrated (沮丧的).”
“I’m not frustrated!” said Spenser. “I’m mad that I’m not good at it, and I’m sad that I can’t do it. ”Spenser felt like he was going to cry.
