Jason’s friend had a new haircut. It looked so cool. When he got home, he asked his mom for a haircut, and he told her clearly how he wanted it.
Sadly, Mom was busy. “First, you have to take a bath so that your hair is wet. Then, you have to brush it out really well. Finally, when you cut, you have to use special scissors (剪刀),” said she, “You need to be very careful and get it just right. If you make a mistake, you can’t glue the hair back on. Maybe I can cut it for you on the weekend.”
Jason looked at his hair in the mirror. It was too long. He didn’t want to go to school looking like that. So he got his school scissors out of his desk. Mom’s words “you can’t glue the hair back on” made him worry a little. He decided to cut just a little hair off.

Snip. Snip. Snip. He kept trying to fix things, but the more he cut, the worse his hair looked! He started to cry.
Mom walked in. She shook her head and didn’t say anything.
“Are you angry because it looks terrible?” he asked.
“No, I’m disappointed (失望的) because you were not patient (耐心的),” Mom replied.
The boy went into the bathroom and took a bath. Mom brushed his hair out, and cut carefully with her special scissors. It wasn’t perfect (完美的), but it was much better.
“All good things come to those who wait.” she said.

In Missouri, a group of students are changing many people’s lives around the world. How are they doing this? They’re buying farm animals!
Tens of thousands of people live with little food and money, so the gift of an animal can save lives. More than 10 years ago, the second-graders at Forsyth School learned about how Heifer International helps people. They decided they wanted to help, too.
Almost 70 years ago, the organization (组织) Heifer started to bring hope for the hungry and poor people. It does this by giving farm animals to the poor and teaching them how to use the animals to improve their lives. Aheifer is a young cow, and it has become the symbol of Heifer’s work. That’s because families with a cow can get milk to drink and sell. Animals save lives in other ways, too. Strong animals, such as water buffaloes (水牛), can plow (犁) land. Families with a water buffalo can grow more food to eat and sell Heifer also gives such animals as horses, sheep, and even bees to families.
Each second-grade class at the school decides which animals to buy and how much to give. The students’ favorite part of working with Heifer is that they can help others. They don’t want these people to be homeless or hungry.
Just like these students, anyone can do many things to help others. Your class might want to raise (筹集) money for Heifer, too. You might also want to give your money or your time to a group in your neighborhood. Why not talk with your classmates about how your school can help others?

In China, there are some new innovations (创新) that have changed people’s lives. They make our lives easy and convenient (便利的). High-speed (高速) trains, bike sharing and cashless payment (无现金支付) are among such innovations.
Nowadays, there are more than one thousand high-speed trains running across China. More and more people in China choose to take them to travel around. Chinese companies have also built many high-speed railways (铁路) in Europe, Southeast Asia and South America. They have become a new name card for China.

Cashless payment has become a new lifestyle in China. It is common that people in China go shopping with no cash. Many people just pay with their smartphones by scanning a QR code (扫描二码) from the seller. Even a person selling vegetables has a QR code.
