1 . The Drama Festival will run in and outside China from June 20 to July 7. Sixty-five works will be put on both in theaters and online. “The festival is all about imagination connecting drama with the latest technology,” says Liu Chang, manager of the festival, who is also a drama director. Technology has improved design, performances and so on. Artists like Liu aren’t sure if the new technology can take drama to the future.

A Chinese play directed by Meng Jinghui, inspired (赋予灵感) by the two-part drama Faust by Johann Wolfgang on Goethe, will be on as the opening play of the festival. In the first half of the play, Meng introduces the story to 400 real audiences (观众) sitting in the Fengchao Theater in Beijing. The second half of the play will have more audiences , who use their cellphones, computers and headsets to be part of the play online.

Zhang Zhouxiang is a director full of imagination. His work, inspired by Hieronymus Bosch’s painting The Garden of Earthly Delights, will be shown from June 30 to July 2. Supported by AI, audiences can explore the fictitious scene, similar to the feeling in the real world, as the painting describes.

“The stage (舞台) design is done by AI, which is like an assistant realizing the ideas of me and my team,” says Liu, “Now I try to use the latest technology, such as ChatGPT, to write the script, and I am still working on it because the language model is difficult to understand.”

Now technology is playing a more and more important role. Many artists want to use it to improve drama. They are very interested in the relationship between people and the latest technology, especially when connected in drama-a scene to dream.

2 . China sent a new X-ray astronomical satellite in space, Einstein Probe, on Jan. 9, 2024.

According to Yuan Weimin, a researcher of the satellite project, the satellite is expected to find the first light from supernova explosions (超新星爆炸) in the universe, monitor high-energy transient (瞬态) objects in the universe, which are now poorly understood by scientists.

When developing the satellite, a new generation of detection equipment (探测设备) with large fields of view and high sensitivity (灵敏度) was needed. But the important question was how to make such equipment.

Lobsters (龙虾) are a kind of sea animal which can be found around the world. Scientists discovered early on that lobsters’ eyes are different from other animals’. Lobsters’ eyes are made up of lots of tiny square tubes, pointing to the same center, which allows light from all directions to reflect in the tubes and meet on the retina (视网膜), which gives lobsters a large field of view. Scientists then simulated (模仿) the lobsters’ eyes to create a telescope to catch X-rays in space.

Through working together with other organizations, the X-ray Imaging Laboratory began the research and development work on lobster-eye X-ray imaging technology in 2010 and finally made a breakthrough.

“Thanks to the lobster-eye telescope technology, the Einstein Probe is able to monitor the poorly known soft X-ray band with a large field of view and high sensitivity,” Yuan said.

1. What is Einstein Probe?
A.A newly-found planet.
B.A newly-built space station.
C.A new X-ray astronomical satellite.
2. Why was Einstein Probe sent in space?
A.To enlarge the field of view.
B.To catch the supernova explosion.
C.To monitor the sensitivity of objects.
3. How did scientists create the telescope technology?
A.By simulating the lobsters’ eyes.
B.By observing lobsters’ movement.
C.By doing experiments on sea animals.
4. What can we infer from the passage?
A.The new detection equipment looked like a lobster.
B.China is the first country to send Einstein Probe into space.
C.The lobster-eye telescope technology leads to Einstein Probe’s success.

All of us learn poems by Li Bai and Du Fu from a young age.     1     of the poets (诗人) lived more than 1,300 years ago. Can you imagine them now standing in front of you reciting (诵读) their poems?

At the World Robot Conference (WRC) 2023, the “poets” appeared in the form of humanoid (人形的) robots. They were both dressed in historical costumes. “Li Bai” was reciting his     2     poem Invitation to Wine. “Du Fu” sat beside him and listened     3    , with a smile on his face.

The WRC 2023 took     4     in Beijing between August 16 and 22. More than 160 companies from around the world took part in the     5    . They showed nearly 600 types of robots. For about 60 of them, it was their     6     public appearance.

The humanoid robots were the most popular with visitors. They not only look like humans, but can also understand human languages and follow instructions. Pet-shaped robots also attracted a large number of visitors. The Cyber Dog 2, for example, enjoys “being tickled (挠痒)” by its owner. What’s more, it can do flips (空翻) and other tricks like a real dog.

Robots are here to stay. How will they     7     the world in the future? It’s a good question. We’ll just have to wait and see.

文章大意:本文通过介绍了在消费电子展览上展出的五件AI产品,并引发读者思考关于人工智能是否保留的问题。

8 .

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) took place in Las Vegas, US, between 9 and 12 January. The event shows off some of the coolest new inventions that might one day be available to the public.

◆One was a robot to help people around the house. It uses artificial intelligence (AI). The computer can learn from experience and do things with AI.

The robot is designed to control household appliances, keep an eye on pets and even check the safety of the house like a soldier.

◆A smart fridge was made by Samsung. This can tell the differences about 33 food items and suggests recipes that will use up what you have.

◆In video gaming, two companies called Nvidia and Convai used AI to create more natural non-playable characters (NPCs). Usually when you meet a character in a game, what they say to you or how they do will have been decided by the game’s creators. The creators of these new AI characters say they are different now because they can act like a real person.

◆Technology company LG showed a transparent television. It’s wireless (无线的), so it can be put anywhere in a room and because it looks like a piece of glass, it can even be put in front of a window. It also has a screensaver (屏保) that can play relaxing pictures, such as fish swimming around in a tank.

◆Finally, for children, the Droyd Venym electric scooter board (滑板车) is basically a seat, low to the ground, with legs and four wheels that you control with handles. Its top speed is three miles per hour.

Some people may worry about how AI might affect their lives. If AI can create images, music and text, one day artists, musicians and writers could be replaced. To my understanding, AI still shows a bright future and aims to create comfortable lives. It helps us study lots of information and work out what is likely to happen next. It depends on how you use this new technology.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the intelligence of machines or software, just like the intelligence of human beings. AI is widely used throughout industry, government and science.

Whether you like it or not, artificial intelligence (AI) (人工智能) is here to stay. It has always been used in many different fields.

AI Helps Missing Children Return Home.

Now the technology has turned out to make a difference in the lives of missing children. A group of 30 students at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) are working out a special project. They have developed an AI system that restores (修复) old photos. The clearer photos can make people better tell missing people.

Over the past three years, the team has restored more than 1, 000 photos. They have helped 11 families reunite (团聚) with their missing children. One success story is that of Sun Zhuo.

The 2014 Chinese movie Dearest was based on the event of Sun Zhuo, who got lost at the age of 4 in 2007. Thanks to the AI program, long-lost son Sun Zhuo reunited with his parents in Shenzhen on December 6, 2021.

Is Seeing Still Believing?

Scene Created by Sora

In November 2022, the AI leader, OpenAI took the world by surprise with its great ChatGPT. Later, the company surprised the public again. On February 16, 2024, it introduced Sora and showed its power. Many are calling it a “game changer”.

Sora is OpenAI’s newest AI model. It allows users to make videos from text words in seconds. Each video can be up to one minute long. “The model saves time and money,” said a creative director. “It will kill many production companies (制片公司) in the future.”

Sora isn’t the first of its kind. Before Sora, an AI model, Gen-2, came out in March 2023. However, it could only make very short videos, and their quality was often poor.

Although Sora and Gen-2 aren’t perfect, they may lead us to a bigger question: Can we still believe what we see online?
