In our village, there’s a special spot where you can hitch (免费搭车) a ride if you wait. One day, as we drove past, a local man from Cyprus nodded at us. We stopped for him and he got into the backseat of our car, carrying two full shopping bags. His face looked tired, but his bright smile and kind eyes lifted our spirits.
A few minutes later, he leaned forward and said, “Here, you drop me here.” We looked around and saw only an empty street with no homes or people in sight. John asked him, “Do you live here?”
The man replied, “No, but I can walk the rest of the way. It’s too far for you to take me up the mountain.”
“No, no. We’ll take you,” we insisted.
So we drove up the winding mountain road, one kilometer, two kilometers, three… I couldn’t imagine how he would have walked it, but he did it on many days. Along the way, he made a phone call, “Mother, get the coffee ready. I have two English people (he thought we were English) who are giving me a ride home. Yes, all the way. Five minutes.”
Seven kilometers later, we arrived at his home, a traditional villa (别墅) framed in magenta bougainvillea with the Mediterranean Sea in the background. A beautiful Cypriot woman stood in front of the house, ready to welcome us. She reminded me of my husband’s dear mother, Yia Yia. Even her little black slippers (拖鞋) were the same as Yia Yia’s.
The kind lady sat with us and shared stories about life in her village, the miracles at her local church, and memories of her late husband. Her lined face and hands spoke of hardship and the hard work of her younger years. I felt deep respect and love for her.
