Liam Hannon, a 14-year-old middle school student, is a leader of a love project. He helps those genuine people who just need a little kindness in their lives.
Four summers ago, he didn’t want to go to camp. His dad said, “You can’t stay at home doing nothing.” So he did an online program and picked service as a subject.
The first week, the challenge said to do something to help people who are experiencing homelessness. Liam said, “Dad, there are people right outside our building who are hungry. What can we do for them? Can we make them lunch?” His dad totally agreed. So he started handing out free lunches to people who were hungry. He and his family made 16 sandwiches, put them in brown bags he’d decorated, added a bottle of water and some fruits, and gave them away. The lunches went very quickly. All the people thanked him a lot.
Liam is now 14 and his project is still going strong. Liam invites friends to help with lunches, and almost every time, they’ve come and given out lunches with him and his dad. Liam also gets decorated bags from kids around the country who want to help. More and more people join his love project to help those homeless people. With the help of friends and other supporters, he hands out 75 to 100 lunches three times a month.
Do something you enjoy. Then you’ll be more inspired to help. And get your friends and family involved. You’ll help more people.

If you visit Chengdu Shishi Union Middle School, you’ll find a long hallway with lots of Chinese herbal medicine specimens (中草药标本). The school built this Chinese medicine culture gallery recently. All the beautiful specimens were made by the students.
Last month, the school organized students to dig herbs in the fields and make specimens. “I went to the riverside in Haibin Park together with my grandma,” said 13-year-old Lang Xiaohan. “I was surprised that the seemingly useless grass can actually cure people’s diseases.” With the help of her grandma and online information, Lang picked some mulberry leaves (桑葚叶). “The mulberry leaves are in the shape of a heart. They can reduce people’s internal heat. How amazing!” Lang said. Along the way, Lang also recognized and picked Salvia plebeian, which can relieve a cough, and dandelion, which can clear away toxins.
Hu Weibo made a specimen of Houttuymia. “In Sichuan, we usually call it ‘zheergen’, and my mom often uses it to cook delicious dishes,” said Hu. “But for the first time, I got to know that it is also a kind of Chinese herbal medicine that can kill viruses. I was so excited when I found it in the fields!”
Ms Luo from the school’s Student Development Center said that 525 students took part in the activity. “Students not only learned more about herbal medicines, but also felt the charm of Chinese traditional culture,” said Luo. “We hope they can find traditional culture fun and useful.”

Do you enjoy having food? Do you love the mix of tastes? Food stops us feeling hungry and gives us energy that our body needs. It’s no wonder we spend so much time preparing and eating food. But what many of us don’t consider is how our mood (情绪) is affected by what we eat.
For me, it’s the unhealthy foods that put a smile on my face — chocolate, cakes and ice cream — well, I do have a sweet tooth! It seems that bad food usually makes us happy, at least in the short term. Most of us get this feeling when we use food as a quick pick-me-up. But experts tell us that eating bad food long term, not only makes us put on weight but can lead to other health problems, and it can also affect our mental state and bring on depression.
The link between our mind and food has been looked at by scientists. They’ve recently found that it’s the bacteria (细菌) in our body that affects our mood. It’s thought we have 39 trillion of these simple, small ones in our body. Researchers at McMaster University in Canada and University College Cork in Ireland, have found that certain “good” bacteria help reduce anxiety in mice. Experts believe that, for us humans, this means food with “good” bacteria can improve the way we feel. Many food products are high in this “good” bacteria and some of the best types are homemade fermented (发酵的) food like miso soup and yogurt. This really makes me think twice about what I eat — maybe I should change my diet to cheer me up!
So maybe it’s time to give up the fatty and sugary things. Eating healthily may seem simple, even if the science behind it is complex. Remember, we are what we eat. There are other factors that can change our mood but it seems we have some ability to improve how we feel by controlling what we put on our plate. Does your diet affect your mood?
27. How does the writer lead into the topic?A.By telling stories. | B.By giving examples. |
C.By asking questions. | D.By listing numbers. |
A.prefer unhealthy food | B.enjoy eating sweets |
C.have a toothache often | D.are happy when eating |
A.improve people’s feelings | B.only reduce anxiety in mice |
C.can be found in all kinds of soup | D.are too small to be found in humans’ bodies |
A.lose fat | B.change the diet | C.do more studies | D.control the mood |
