Narrative (叙事) poems — which simply mean “story poems”— are among the oldest forms of literature. Before there were printed books, people would tell stories through narrative poems, using rhythm, repetition and vivid language to make their tales easy to remember and share.
Choose a topic. Pick a story that you really want to tell.
Skip the buildup. Narrative poems don’t waste words introducing characters or explaining the scene — most dive right in. Try starting your narrative poem in the middle of the action scene.
Sweat the small stuff (小事). The best narrative poems use exact, descriptive words that bring out a story’s details and paint a rich picture.
A.Repeat yourself. |
B.Think of the five senses. |
C.Try to divide your poem into several parts. |
D.So readers can be brought immediately into the heart of your story. |
E.Many older narrative poems have a set rhythm and rhyme structure. |
F.A lot of older narrative poems tell beautiful love stories in everyday language. |
G.It could be something that happened to you or something that’s completely fictional. |

Playing sports is a great way to exercise, and that doesn’t have to stop once you’re an adult.
These injuries are painful and often require missing games and practices to give your body the proper rest and care needed to recover. Unfortunately, a previous injury is one of the most significant predictors of a future injury.
Here are some injury prevention tips:
Be aware of the environment and field conditions. Environment doesn’t just mean the weather, although that is important, but also how safely teammates and the opponents are playing.
Watch for athletic sportsmanship. When athletes don’t play by the rules or play too aggressively, an injury is more likely to occur. Watch to ensure officials and members of the other team demonstrate a good understanding of fair play.
Recognize an injury. Despite our best efforts, an injury can happen.
By taking these smart steps to avoid (and if necessary, address) injuries, you can set the stage for a life-long, healthy love of sports.
A.Assess potential injuries. |
B.Arrange for an athletic screening. |
C.Sporting activities may result in any type of injury. |
D.Sports is an ideal way to socialize and maintain fitness. |
E.Also, check out the field or court where you’re playing. |
F.If it does, it’s very important to address it immediately. |
G.That’s why injury prevention—not just treatment or recovery—-is key. |

I always thought people’s taking pictures of their food was kind of silly, but at this new pop-up restaurant in the UK, I’d probably do it too. “The Picture House” is the world’s first pay-by-photo restaurant — you order, click a photo of the food, share on Instagram and eat for free!
The restaurant belongs to frozen food giant (巨人) Birds Eye, who came up with the idea to cash in on people’s addiction with photographing food and sharing the pictures online. They conducted a survey and found out that more than half of the British population regularly took pictures of their meals. So they realized it was a better way to advertise their new dining range.
The pop-up diner was open in Soho, London for three days in May, and is now moving to other major UK cities. They serve two-course meals that customers don't have to pay for, if they photo and Instagram it.
The restaurant is a part of Birds Eye’s “Food for Life” campaign, a new marketing project that aims at changing the way people look at frozen food. “Taking photos of food enables people to show off and to share their mealtime moments — from the everyday to the special,” said marketing director Margaret Jobling.
The reaction to The Picture House has been great so far. And the pay-by-picture concept has proven to be an effective way. Alternative payment methods are actually gaining popularity among a lot of businesses. Last year, in a cafe in Germany customers pay by how much time they spend there, not by what they eat.

“Poetry is in every encounter with my patients. If we do anything when we’re with our patients, we’re really immersed in their stories, really hearing their voices. And, certainly, that’s what a poem does,” he said.
Rafael worries that something important has been lost in medicine and medical education today: humanity, which he finds in poetry. To end that, he leads a weekly reading and writing workshop for medical students and residents. He thinks medical training focuses too much on distancing the doctor from his or her patients, and poems can help close that gap.
Third-year resident Andrea Schwartz was one of the workshop regulars. She said, “I think there’s no other profession other than medicine that produces as many writers as it does. And I think that is because there’s just so much power in doctors and patients interacting when patients are at their saddest moments.” Not everyone believes that’s what doctors should do, though.
Rafael said, “I was afraid of how people might judge me, actually. In the medical profession, as many people know, we must always put the emergency first. But, you know, that kind of treatment, if it’s happening in the hospital, very regrettably, sadly, results in a bad outcome. The family is sitting by the bedside. The patient hasn’t survived the cancer. Don’t we still have a role as healers there?”
In a poem titled “Health”, Rafael writes of the wish to live forever in a world made painless by our incurable joy. He says he will continue teaching students, helping patients and writing poems, his own brand of medicine.

【推荐2】Why do we read poetry? First obvious one: because we enjoy it.
Many of us read poetry simply because we often feel depressed and hopelessly lost, and in poetry we see how beautiful and strange everything is.
There are many different kinds of poems. They are not all calming. Some poems make me anxious, angry, scared, and sad, which is why I value them.
Here are the main reasons I respond to poetry, as far as I can tell.
Poetry plays with language. It often slams words together in surprising ways like the way food can be when the chef has paired ingredients that you never thought would taste good together but somehow do.
Many poems are dense. Words mean two or three things at once and lots of suggestions are packed between the lines. This is intellectually(在智力上) inspiring.
And, of course, there's the subject matter. It interests me just as it would if the same subject was explored in a story or essay. Not all poems interest me in this way, but then not all stories and essays do, either.
A.So in that way poetry calms our anxiety. |
B.As a reader, I want a full meal, not just dessert. |
C.Another reason is to appreciate the suggestions offered. |
D.The only other reason seems to be for academic purposes. |
E.The best part about poetry is that they are not fixed in length. |
F.Metrical(格律的) poems are about setting up rules and then bending them. |
G.It allows me to read the same poem over and over, always finding new things in it. |
The Flight of Youth
By Richard Henry Stoddard
There are gains for all our losses,
There are balms ( 止痛膏) for all our pains,
But when youth, the dream, departs
It takes something from our hearts,
And it never comes again.
We are stronger, and are better,
Under, manhood's sterner (严峻的) reign (驱使).
Till we feel that something sweet
Followed youth, with flying feet,
And will never come again.
Something beautiful is vanished (使消逝),
And we sigh (叹息) for it in vain;
We behold (看到) it everywhere,
On the earth, and in the air,
But it never comes again!
1. Is this poem written using personification (拟人法)?2. When does youth take something from our hearts?
3. Which word does the poet use to describe manhood's reign?
4. Where does the poet think we can find youth?
5. What does this poem want to tell us?
