2 . Summer is my good friend. But we often argued because of some little things. Once our school would hold a special activity—Winter Play. We both acted in it. Our director, Mr. Jackson, wrote the script (剧本) and the song for the play. At first, we practiced without talking with each other. Then one day, Mr. Jackson said to us, “Summer and Julia, I’d like to talk to you after practice today.”
My heart started beating fast. I thought about how badly I did in the practice last week. And I wondered whether I would be kicked out of the play. But he said to us, “You’re excellent and I want you two to team up and sing the song all by yourselves. You can say no, but I believe you two can do well.”
I thought Summer must say no. But surprisingly, she agreed and we said yes at the same time. Leaving the office, I asked Summer, “Haven’t you forgotten the things between us?” She smiled at me, and then we had a heart-to-heart talk. We talked about our silly argument before, and we suddenly had a perfect idea to act the song in a humorous way. And it looked like we were arguing. We laughed many times when we practiced. On the day we showed our play, the audience (观众) couldn’t stop laughing at all.
Sometimes, a heart-to-heart talk can solve many problems. If you can find a way to laugh instead of arguing, you might find a surprising new way into friendship.

8 . Every afternoon, as they were coming from school, the children used to go and play in the Giant’s garden.
It was a large lovely garden, with soft green grass, beautiful flowers and twelve peach-trees. The birds sat on the trees and sang so sweetly that the children used to stop their games to listen to them. “How happy we are here!” they cried to each other.
One day the Giant came back and saw the children playing in the garden.
“What are you doing here?” he cried in a very unfriendly voice, and the children ran away.
“My own garden is my own garden,” said the Giant, “I will allow nobody to play in it but myself.” So he built a high wall all round it.
He was a very selfish (自私的) Giant.
The poor children had nowhere to play. They had to wander (徘徊) round the high wall and talk about the beautiful garden inside. “How happy we were there,” they said to each other.
Months later, “I cannot understand why the Spring is so late in coming,” said the Selfish Giant as he sat at the window and looked out at his cold white garden; “I hope there will be a change in the weather.”
▲ The Autumn gave golden fruit to every garden, but to the Giant’s garden she gave none. So it was always Winter there.
One morning the Giant was lying awake in bed when he heard some lovely music. It was so long since he had heard a bird sing in his garden. He jumped out of bed and looked out.
What did he see?
Through a little hole in the wall the children had crept (爬) in, and they were sitting in the branches (枝头) of the trees. They birds were flying about and the flowers were looking up through the green grass and laughing.

9 . Modern China, like most of the countries in the world, uses the Gregorian calendar as its primary way of keeping time through the year. That means January 1 in Paris is also January 1 in Beijing. However, the traditional Chinese lunisolar (日与月的) calendar plays a necessary role in modern Chinese society.
Often mistakenly seen as a lunar calendar (月历), the traditional Chinese calendar is in fact lunisolar. The lunar calendar follows the moon’s synodic orbit (天体运行的轨道). It takes the moon 29.53 days to finish one full orbit around the earth. The year is then divided into 12 lunar months, which only adds up to 354 days each year, about 11 days short of the actual time it takes the earth to finish one full orbit around the sun. The Chinese add a 13th month to their traditional calendar about once every four years, that is, a leap year (闰月). So the traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar is a hybrid timekeeping way that considers both the moon’s orbit around the earth and the earth’s 365-day orbit around the sun.
The Gregorian calendar is the official calendar in China. It tells people holidays such as Labor Day, Chinese National Day, and the international New Year. However, the Chinese calendar still plays an important role in everyday life. It tells people the traditional Chinese holidays such as the Lantern Festival, Tomb-Sweeping Day, Mid-Autumn Festival, and, of course, the Chinese New Year.
